“Beautiful setting, lovely resort!”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

Our stay was near the end of the tourist season, so some places were shut down, but we still had a wonderful time. The temperature was in the low 70s every day, so not many were in the pools. Miniature golf was popular however. We did not have a car, so used the resort shuttle to go to town on two occasions. We enjoyed looking around Chersonisls and brought back groceries both times. The ATM at the grocery store was easy to use also. Between the shuttle stop and the grocery store is Aqua World, a small aquarium that is awesome -don't miss it. John will show you many snakes, turtles, and lizards, and there are plenty of opportunities for pictures. We also took a taxi to Heraklion one day to see Knossos, the archeological museum, and look around the city. The landscaping at Village Heights is wonderful, the entire resort is spotless, and the staff are very helpful. Two small areas to improve: better lighting in the units, and more comfortable chairs in the dining room of the units.

After looking at some of the recent reviews I think that some contributors are being really fussy about this resort. I really couldn't fault the weather, staff, facilities and the general air of calm about this lovely hotel. As has been said many times in recent reviews, the food is absolutely top notch and good value. I too was handed an envelope inviting us to contact Diamond Resorts at some time during our stay for a 'discussion over breakfast'. This I declined to do. A lady did knock on our door one morning to ask if we wanted to discuss Diamond Resorts, I said no politely and was not bothered again.
The only problem we had was that the pool which looked so spotlessly clean and inviting was impossible to use in late October as it was freezing cold and unheated. In the summer I think that this problem would not apply.
We will definitely be returning to Crete and probably to this resort.

This was our second visit and the overall quality of the resort remains excellent but this time we had some minor reservations about the place. The facilities, the grounds, pools, bars, services and the quality and friendliness of the staff are exceptional. Whilst the rooms are well equipped there could be an improvement in the lighting. Gettting dressed and ready for the evening, particularly for the ladies is not easy and some improved lighting would be beneficial near the mirror especially. There was also more evidence of minor problems - loose wall socket, sticking door, light bulbs out, shower problems, general minor maintenance problems. The biggest problem for me however is introduction of cats everywhere. Last year there wasn't a cat to be seen but this year, having a ground floor studio, we couldn't have breakfast outside without 3 or 4 cats jumping on the table and eating the food if you left for a minute. You couldn't leave the doors open or they were in the room jumping on the tables looking for food. This is definitely a change for the worse.

The poolside food and drink continues to be excellent and the poolside restaurant was also top quality. We attended an Oriental and a Mexican night and both were excellent. Also visited the upstairs restaurant twice. The first time was really good and value for money. We returned specifically to try the fillet of beef which had looked so good on the previous visit. Firstly there was only one left and although it looked to be perfectly cooked it was very tough and disappointing. These things happen.

We intend to keep coming to the Village Heights but the cats are certainly a big turn off.

Room Tip: If you don't want to share with cats, it might be better to request an upper floor room.

.......beware of the "timeshare" sales team. We booked this resort via RCI, not direct via the owners, Diamond Resorts Ltd. Upon check-in we were handed a letter "from RCI" which turned out to be an invitation from Diamond to meet our holiday representative a couple of days later. We declined on genuine medical grounds. Others to whom we spoke had attended a meeting. We saw many of them start at the breakfast table, after which they were taken on a guided tour of the resort, after which they were taken for the hard sell talk. Effectively this took a whole morning. WE heard from one couple that they had decided not to buy a share in the resort, but had received a 'phone call in their apartment at 10pm, offering a "special deal" (which they declined) followed up by another 'phone call a morning after, just to check whether they had changed their minds. They were furious!

This high pressure sales technique is not what one expects when going on a holiday for rest and relaxation. It is a great shame because the resort itself is fantastic. The apartments are large, modern, clean, and fully equipped (do ask for a mattress topper - the beds are very hard, but are over 6ft wide). The staff members are friendly, courteous, and efficient without being intrusive.

There is a buffet breakfast and dinner available in the main dining area which has views over the main pool and out to sea, and an a la carte restaurant above. Both serve excellent food and wines (the local wines are delicious). There are two pools, each with their own snack bars, a tennis court, and ample loungers around the pools. The whole resort is beautifully landscaped, and the smell of fresh rosemary, thyme, and jasmine amongst many other plants and trees is wonderful.

We loved the peace and quiet. Occasionally we would hear the tinkling of goat bells which graze on the adjacent hills and, very rarely, we could just hear a faint hum from the main E75 road, but only if the wind blew towards the resort.

We hired a car which is essential (in our view), although there is a courtesy bus to and from the nearest town of Hersonissos. If you do drive, be aware that the locals have no sense of fear, and take no notice of any road signs, traffic lights, road markings, speed limits, etc, and will drive about 6ft from the rear of your car whether it be day or night, rain, sun, blind bend - in fact they appear to enjoy the challenge. The E75 is a relatively new state highway. Where it is not a dual carriageway it is subject to a 90kph speed limit, is single land in each direction, had double white lines along its centre, and a thick white line to mark the hard shoulder. It has large blind bends where it curves around the mountains. We discovered that almost all vehicles travel in excess of the speed limit. This means that they quickly catch up with those of us who try to obey the rules. This is of no hindrance to them because, as they approach, they indicate to overtake and, if you do not immediately move over onto the hard shoulder, they will simply cross the double white lines. It is not uncommon for this to be happening in both directions at the same time, meaning there are four lanes of traffic passing one another on a two lane road. On one occasion there was a fifth lane. Be warned, if you think a taxi will be safer, they are the main overtaking culprits! The only way to overcome this is to simply accept that this is the way it is in Greece, so "go with the flow".

A couple of "must sees" - The palace ruins at Knossos - about 25 minute's drive from the resort. Greek myths and legends of the Minotaur, Labyrinth, and the Minoan civilisation are fascinating. A group guide is well worth the 10 euros charge. Also, the Dicti Cave where Zeus was born is worth a visit, although it does require a steep climb up a mountain, followed by an awful lot of steps back down into the cave. Just a word of warning; check your change when paying your entry fees for these attractions. It's too late to make a complaint once you have moved away from the pay booth. I was caught by a "slight of hand" even 'though I had already been warned to check my change.

My wife and I fall into the over 50's age group, and we loved the island of Crete. The people are friendly, and all we met spoke excellent English. The food and wine were excellent everywhere, and car parking is generally free (if a little haphazard). Weather-wise - we went during the first two weeks of October. The first week had three very hot days followed by four days of strong winds, temperatures plummeting from about 28 to 13 degrees, and a couple of days of showers. During the second week the hot weather returned, rising to around 28-30 degrees. The locals told us that both the hot and the wet weather was abnormal, and that it is usually around the low 20's at that time of year.

The poverty in some of the villages is shocking and, with the greatest respect to those who blame Greece's entry into the EU for its current state of financial affairs, it is all too plain to see that a great deal of this poverty has existed for many years prior to that event.

We would happily return to both Crete and to this resort, as long as we didn't have to attend a sales presentation by Diamond Resorts Ltd!

Room Tip: This is a villa resort, architect designed to copy the traditional form of Cretan villages and to ma...

Village Heights has two pools, 2 restaurants plus a pool snack bar. The grounds are well cared for and outstanding in its variety of flowers and plantings. We found mostly Europeans as guests. Front desk was most helpful granting our request for a mattress topper after 1st night. It was such a relief. We rented a car and explored the port several times for meals. We had our anniversary dinner on roof top restaurant, very nice. We continued to visit many villages in a leisurely pace. The roads in that part of Crete were outstanding with great guard rails. The Greeks are impatient drivers with no manners and one must be patient and careful, but it was worth the effort to visit interesting places.

Room Tip: We were RCI guests with no opportunity to change from a studio apt. We had a spacious patio and stu...

Here for 2 weeks. Quality accommodation, fantastic facilities, spa, 2 outdoor and 1 indoor pools. 2 restaurants, 1 buffet with loads of choice and top notch quality and 1 a la carte restaurant with views of the hills. I can't fault the service in any respect, the staff are helpful, polite, friendly and always willing to help. The apartments are cleaned daily and to a high standard. They all have a full kitchen with cooker, hob, microwave, dishwasher full set of pots and pans for everything you could need, coffee machine, kettle toaster and fridge. All rooms have a safe and aircon included. There is a shop, beauty and spa treatments, WiFi at a charge, crazy golf, tennis court and kids entertainment in the peak months. Village heights boasts a golf course but I don't play so it would be unfair for me to comment. A courtesy bus runs to and from the town of Hersonissos from 9.45-7.30 If you want to travel further afield or eat in the villages, Koutouloufari, piskopiano and old hersonissos I would recommend hiring a car though taxis are readily available. Would highly recommended, you won't be disappointed.

I have stayed in many RCI places around the world and this is right up there with the best of them.
We had a one bed apartment which was enormous, overlooking the mountain range and a bit if the sea, the view was quite breathtaking. The room is cleaned daily except Sundays. The two massive swimming pools were superb, very clean. The resort surroundings are very clean and the staff were all great and very helpful.
Dining in the restaurant or the buffet area was great, food of very good quality.
We had a fantastic holiday here and it is highly recommended

Room Tip: We had 2111, at end of resort i recommend it
