Hersonissos Palace Hotel
Ranked #84 of 174 Hotels in Hersonissos
Reviewed 4 June 2011

Having recently returned from a week at the Hersonissos Palace Hotel and looked at the reviews here, I felt that some of them did not provide an objective appraisal of the property and focused mainly on trivial matters and assumptions.

When we arrived at the hotel we were made to feel very welcome by the receptionist who provided us with a list of the meal times, all-inclusive benefits and some other useful points. The meal times were exactly as advertised by the travel company on their website. That which was promised at the time of booking was delivered. Our room was spacious and extremely clean. All the advertised facilities were provided and were in good order. There were plenty of drawers and hangers for clothes. A safe was provided for valuables. The balcony was furnished with two chairs and a table. Complimentary toiletries were provided in the bathroom. Although there was a hairdryer in the bathroom, I did not use it as I prefer to take my own. The air conditioning worked perfectly and kept the room at a very comfortable sleeping temperature at night.

The pool bar serves a variety of drinks and has a shaded area for those who want to escape the sun. The loungers around the pool were all in excellent condition and the entire area was spotless. The pool itself is small but perfectly clean.

The restaurant serves buffet meals three times a day with a rotating menu of Greek dishes, salads, vegetables, meats and even chips for those who cannot go away for a week without eating them. At breakfast the fresh bread was still warm. There is also a grill area where pancakes and omelettes are available at breakfast and fresh meats and fish in the evening. The souvlaki were delicious!

Most evenings are low-key and the majority of the guests sit at the pool area for drinks. Once a week a Greek night is held with local dancers and musicians and plenty of audience participation. For those who want more lively entertainment at night there are plenty of bars and clubs a short walk from the hotel.

Nights could be noisy with large groups of guests returning to the hotel in the early hours without consideration for those who were already asleep. However, that is one of the pitfalls of choosing such a resort and our overall enjoyment was not marred by these minor incidents.

Pool towels are available from the reception against a 5 euro deposit.

There is free wi-fi available in the lobby area for those who want to catch up on news and messages. Overall the hotel is quiet and relaxed - just what we were looking for.

As with any other hotel around the world, the check-out time is 12 noon however rooms can be kept until later upon payment of a fee. The hotel was also happy to store our luggage in a room downstairs until our airport coach arrived.

Overall we had a wonderful stay and would happily recommend the hotel to others.

My wife and I travelled to Crete to spend the week leading up to my birthday at the Hersonissos Palace and we enjoyed every bit of it.

The double room we had was clean, comfortable and had a good LCD television with satellite channels comprising of at least two English language channels (CNN and BBC World) along with many German, French. Greek and Russian channels. That said, one doesn't go on holiday just to watch TV - but it was nice that you could get the latest news from home as and when you needed it. The bathroom was immaculate and the bath/shower all worked fine. Similarly the balcony was nice and we spent a good few hours out there reading our books when it was too hot to sit around the pool.

The pool itself is well maintained and we spent a good few mornings swimming up and down to our heart's content. When not in the pool we spent many a morning and afternoon relaxing on the loungers surrounding the pool area, or sitting under shade beside the bar. We took advantage of the inclusive drinks (served from 10am until 11pm daily) which included the occasional local beer, cocktail (a choice of four that forms part of the inclusive package, anything else is chargeable), or soft drinks (their lemonade is excellent). If you need to have something in your room, there are plenty of supermarkets nearby where you can purchase a large bottle of water. Useful for when the inclusive hours are not in effect.

Something that I don't think has been mentioned in these reviews is the free wi-fi that you can access from the main lobby. It's possible that you may get a signal around the pool/bar area, but this depends on your device. Wi-fi/internet connections are not available in any of the rooms. If you don't have your own internet-enable device, there is a computer in the lobby area which you can use at a reasonable rate.

The food at the Hersonissos Palace was excellent and of high quality. It's a buffet system for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but there is plenty of food available and the choices are changed daily. The downside to this was that we noticed that a few guests had piled their plates high and left large amounts when they left the restaurant. If fellow guests continue to waste food like this, I feel that it could force hotels like the Hersonissos Palace to raise their prices and/or switch to staff serving food to reduce unnecessary waste. I felt that lunch could be extended by an hour as it does tend to get a bit busy during the lunch period if you don't turn up dead on at 1pm. An extra hour would make it easier for people to trundle in more leisurely and have less congestion around the food tables.

The Hersonissos area itself is much bigger than I expected. After a day or two we wondered out of the hotel to get some laundry done (the hotel itself does not offer a laundry service, but there is a very good serviced launderatte along the main road - about a 5-10 minute walk away - 10 euros for a washing machine inc. drying and folding - just hand them your washing and they do everything) and noticed just how accessible everything is.

The promenade along the beach offers a multitude of cafes, restaurants and shops. Beware of agents working for Aegean Blue Village Heights who stop people along the street (they may approach by scooter) and offer scratchcards. Miraculously I had a winning scratchcard (all gold!) with fabulous prizes to be won (I could have had an iPad, a Sony video camera, a holiday or an MP3 player). In order to collect the prize, the agent offers to get you a taxi to Village Heights (return trip paid by them) and while you collect the prize, you're subjected to sales spiel. We made our excuses and did some digging on the internet when we got back to the hotel - we were right, it's not something you want to be subjected to (in short: the prize you've won is the holiday which is to one of their own resorts - obviously - but you will have to undergo 90 minutes or so of hard sell), so avoid these agents if possible. But similarly don't let them put you off your holiday!

The town of Hersonissos - you can access it either the beach promenade after a 15 minute walk, or via the main road running parallel to the Hersonissos Palace hotel offers up a eclectic mix of old Crete, hundreds of curio shops, hotels, bars and restaurants. One place you must absolute visit is Aquaworld Aquarium - just follow the signs from the main road - it's off the road leading away from the Spar supermarket. John and Judith McLaren run one of the finest aquariums I've ever been too. It's not just about the aquatic world either - there are reptiles (including two HUGE Burmese Pythons) and iguanas. The best time to go is 10:30am when John feeds the various animals. You only have to pay once and can return as many times as you like during your holiday. An absolute bargain.

My first trip to Crete was wonderful and I can't thank the Hersonissos Palace staff enough for their hospitality and comfortable stay. Judging from previous comments here, it seems that people just do not understand what it is that they've booked (or they just don't travel well). This hotel is not the Ritz, or the Crown Plaza. and it doesn't pretend to be. But it is clean, well looked after, and comfortable. Value for money wise, you can't beat it. But I would *strongly* advise spending the extra money to upgrade from the promo rooms if that is what you've booked.

When we arrived to our room, as there were 3 of us I was expecting 1 bedroom and a living room with a sofa bed but come across 1 room with a double bed and a camp bed next to that. Not a good start as we are 3 grown men so space was very limited. The hotel itself was very nice and most of the staff were very friendly, barring 1 person who worked behind the bar who I felt had an issue with English people and I was not the only person to feel that way. This person would ignore us at the bar favouring the Russians which the hotel was inundated with. Also at five to eleven we went to get another drink before the deadline at eleven for free drinks, we were told we couldnt have another one because we had have a drink left!!!!!!!!!!!!. I complained to the manager the next day, amongst other english hotel guests and on that day felt he was just brushing us off. However the day after the manager and that barperson couldnt do enough for us, but it had already set in. Regarding the all inclusive, we could only eat at certain times in the day, there were no free bar snacks and we had to pay for bottled water and fresh orange juice, so if you have kids going with you, beware you will need to spend money. We were leaving early saturday morning and we had to be out of our room by 12pm friday, they allowed us to extend the room til 6pm friday for additional 30 euros (which was very kind of them, not) and we were allowed to go to lunch but after 2pm we had to pay for any drinks and food if we required them, we didnt want to put any more money into that hotel so we went out to eat. This has left a very poor taste in our mouths regarding this hotel and we certainly wont be going back.

There is nothing actually wrong with this hotel, its an average 3 star hotel, ( is the 5 star rating an official one or have they just made it up ? ). The food is typical Greek food, ok could be hotter and the bar / pool is average. The problem is the hotel is situated next to 2 pieces of empty land that have become overgrown and are a hotbed for mozzies breeding, they are everywhere from sitting round the bar to the air con system, i must have been bitten over 30 times and this is early May,
The resort is one long street of shops and a promenade full of discos at night blasting their music out to very few people, there are very few taverna bars and thats it.
We hired a car, so if your going to Crete i suggest Ag.Nicholias or Rethymnon, much nicer resorts

Be careful here as there are a number of different hotels with the same name, this hotel is beautiful, such a good priced 5star. some people need to consider that five star in greece is not five star in england. Its important to recognise this, but the staff are lovely the food is lovely the hotel is lovely the area is lovely, beautiful morning or evening walks, its a real romantic spot for young lovers. dont take no notive of anyone else giving you bad reviews we had an amazing week there.

Upon arriving at this hotel, me and my girlfriend had high hopes of a wonderful 5 star hotel as we where told this is what we had chosen! After recieving our keys we where led out of the main hotel, and then taken to a grotty 1 star hotel about 100 metres away from what we thought was our hotel, after a few minutes in this disgusting room we went to complain, with another couple who had arrived at the same time as us. We where told that if we wanted to stay in the main hotel we would have to pay 100 euros to be upgraded, so not to ruin our 1st holiday together we agreed, so where then placed in our new room, it was better, but at no means 5 star! Pathetic shower, useless view on balcony of a dingy old shop, the restaurants and bars around this hotel are good but for the hotel it's self a complete waste of money!!! On our last night our balcony was egged by the roudy crowds of drunk dillequints you can hear every night out side! Terrible terrible terrible

i come to the PAlace for many years, i think 13 years and mostely 2 times a season.
Its always a pleasurer to come back.
I like the hotel mostely for the friendly staff, who i know for many years and for me its also very important to sleep in clean room. The rooms are cleaned every day and have tv, phone, fridge and very good airconditioning.
The breakfast is always a raison to get up early, there is alot of choice with nice pancakes or omelets at the grill. The lunch and evening diner are always fresh and with alot of variation. I like the greek food but there is also alot of choise if you like european kitchen. The cook at the grillwith the glasses is always laughing and telling jokes...i like him:)
The swimming pool is also very clean and there is once a week barbeque or greek evening around the pool, its very cosy with the live music.
If you like to go out for as walk or a dance there is alot of choises nearby the hotel like bars, shops,dancings,.......
The beach is within a distance of 100meters s if you wake up in the morning with the noice of the gloves from the sea its amazing...its very relaxing and makes me happy:)
Im looking forward to come this summer again to the Palace
