Stayed 7 nights from 31st August.
As usual, a wonderful stay at our favourite Greek hotel, this being our fifth consecutive summer visit to the Royal Mare, which kind of says it all.

Beautiful buildings set out as a Cretian village, immaculate gardens, pools and grounds, great restaurants and food and the staff are lovely and look after us so well.

As always, we were warmly welcomed by Elena, Front Office Manager and Dora, Receptionist both of whom remembered us from our previous stays.
They went out of their way to arrange a few things for us during our stay, which made all the difference to our holiday and we can't thank them enough.

Elena at Candia restaurant remembered us and Irini, Daniella, Marianne and the other girls at El Greco restaurant all looked after us so well during meals, and their friendly service really added to the great feeling we get when we return to the Royal Mare.

We had a VIP Upper Floor room which was tastefully decorated in marine colours and was smart and comfortable. The bathroom had a luxurious feel and had a bidet, separate shower cubicle and bath, which helped with quicker turnarounds for dinner! Although very well appointed, the shower cubicle seals leaked (which I will report for maintenance) and overall the bathroom was probably due for updating, although it still looked very good.

The shared private pool was lovely and usually very quiet and for a change of scenery, you could use the communal pools or the beach instead. Again the communal areas are immaculate and the beach, although not sandy, is clean and has fine pebbles, plus there's a beach bar for drinks.

We love the alternative dining options with fine dining in the Candia and Greek dishes in El Greco and the food is delicious in each of these. The Albatross does great seafood, although we did not use it this year.

The highlight of our stay is always the Greek BBQ night at El Greco which features Greek music and Cretian dancers.
In previous years, a five piece band with singers and an amazing bouzouki player would provide the music, but they have since moved on and whilst the existing one man band was very good, we have missed the exceptional previous band... could a return be arranged please?

The main Symposio buffet restaurant whilst lacking some ambience, does provide excellent food.
Some reviews have criticised it for having the same food every night, but the fact is they do provide an enormous variety of delicious food every night, so therefore the secret is to pick something different each night, as there's so much to chose from.
The chef's counter prepare food in front of you and this is excellent, and as a meat eater, I would strongly recommend the 'Gyros' which is delicious!
Whilst it can be busy and lacking in intimacy inside the Symposio, this is easily remedied by asking for a balcony table outside, as this has a good view down to the sea and you can happily watch the sun go down whilst you eat.

The new 'Elements' All Inclusive package was very good, as it included the alternative dining restaurants and some Spa treatments and it made the holiday much better value for money. We felt we had got much more value out of the holiday with the Elements package.
The Spa / Thalasso centre was excellent if you're that way inclined.

Visiting in early September, rather than June / July, the pools felt slightly cooler, but there were still hot days so this was not a problem.
Also there were much fewer children, as school holidays had ended and there were noticeably more British guests, compared to June /July.

In summary, the Royal Mare is just a lovely place to be although strangely, some photos in brochures and online do not really seem to do it justice, so don't be put off.
It may not sit in the prettiest part of Crete, but that really doesn't matter as everything you need is right there for you.

We have recently stayed at other 5 star resorts in Kos, Rhodes and Corfu and whilst they have been great, none of them seem to have that little bit of magic that you feel at the Royal Mare and for this reason we will keep returning!

A great holiday and it's heart breaking to go home.... We will be back!

Room Tip: Upper floors away from the main 'roads' through the complex are quieter

5 Star all the way, hotel excellent, staff friendly and helpful, restaurants great same as all the food and drink for the week.
The room we had was very good with a swim up pool outside patio doors.
We tried all the al a carte restaurants and was not disappointed, we would recommend the Lobster night and the Greek Barbecue night, Asian Restruant great as was the manager Lefteris who looked after us, at several different nights.
We would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: Own Pool view ground floor

Food was adequate but not really special. Even the A La Carte at The l Greco was only ok. Bathrooms are a bit tired.

However pools are great, staff super friendly and we could not believe how hard they work.

It was bery enjoyable

Oh and BTW make sure you take some robust mosquito repellent. Not only for the hotel and room but the whole of the island at the coast

This was our first visit to Greece, the Spa hotel was super, clean, friendly, everything you could need.
We went all inclusive, I'm not a fan of buffet style dinners.. breakfast is very good, luches and afternoon snacks available also good. The Oriental restaurant was fabulous but not inclusive.
Men did need to wear trousers for dinner, we didn't;t know this prior to travelling, nor did many others that we met.. so be prepared.

My wife and I booked a Titan Tours holiday to celebrate our anniversary. We were delighted with our stay at the Aldemar Royal Mare. Our room fronted on to a private pool and had a garden balcony at the back. The room was a good size and the air conditioning was really effective. Everything at the resort was easy to reach with a short downhill walk to the private beach and an uphill walk to the main building and the restaurant. Buffet style meals were excellent. Wonderful food choice and no repeats during our 8 day stay. The waiting staff were friendly and highly efficient. We took our meals in the outside are where you could look out across the resort to the sea. Plenty of other restaurant facilities, shops, a mini-market and snack bars around the site.

Room Tip: Rooms with a private pool are well worth having.
