“The view”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

The sanctuary is a place to visit even if you are not religious. The view from the porch of the church is a must see.

“Amazing place”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

Thoroughly enjoyed our first port of call while on our guided tour of tinos island. This is a lovely church where people from afar come to celebrate baptism and other special occasions. Lovely red carpet leads you up into the church where I bought 4 candles to light for good health....ladies come up procession street sometimes on their hands and knees into the church as this has an icon of Virgin Mary that can produce miracles.....an amazing place to visit while on tinos island

“This is the Lourdes of the Aegean, the spiritual heart of Greece.”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

This is an island of pilgrimages, dovecotes, some of the most skilled stone masons on the islands..... and a haunting sense of something amiss.
Don't be surprised if some of the ladies...for some reason its always the ladies...,don gloves and special knee pads and proceed to crawl up the street from the boat on their hands and knees. This is the Lourdes of the Aegean, the spiritual heart of modern Greece.... and the ladies are heading in penance or supplication,up the hill to the church of Panayia Evengelistria, the home of a miracle-working icon of the virgin attributed to St.Luke.

Tinos was venetian for 500 years thanks to its impregnable mountain fortress of Exombourgo, but there is a very unusual practice that stands out, like a strange beacon, the practice of building dovecotes remain the most striking feature of the often lyrical Tiniot landscape with cornfields, leafy villages and some 800 chapels.....and the bevies of wheeling dovecotes returning to one of the estimated 1300 dovecotes, usually two storeys high, sometimes as big as their owner's houses.
Add the sound of plainsong and the evening sun on their wings and the effect is spine-tingling. Another skill is that of carving marble which puts any craftsperson from Tinos will get serious consideration anywhere in Greece. The place to see their work is Pyrgos.

Dont miss the great icing-suger church at Panayia that houses the sacred icon, its gloomy interior, heavy with incense,is lit by candles, lamps and the glitter of fervently burnished metal. Also a must is the convent of Kechrovounio,a structure of dazzling white cell geometry. As one soon comes to expect of a Greek village, trees provide shade and a sense of fruitful ease.
