We stayed in this hotel in February. It was cold outside, just getting a few hours of daylight every day. The staff was very sweet, knowledgeable and welcoming. There was always fresh tea and coffee on hand. The rooms were clean and cute.
They offered an Aurora wake-up service (we had overcast weather all week so we weren't so lucky) and there was a small room with glass windows where you could sit to watch the stars. Overall a very (very!) nice place to stay.

Basecamp says it all, a great small hotel in the center of Longyearbyen at Svalbard. Rough, but comfortable and friendly with good breakfast and service minded staff. The rooms are with bunk beds, as such single beds, but the quality of the beddings was good, and the room large and comfortable with good bathrooms.

In my recent visit to Longyearbyen I decided to stay at Trapper’s after researching and finding out that it seemed very original and cozy. You don’t travel that far to stay in a place that will make your vacations seems like elsewhere…
I was very glad to be there, staff was amazing, always super helpful and willing to do whatever to make your life easier. The rooms were warm, which helped even during ‘summer time’, and breakfast was superb. There is always coffee, tea and cookies on the reception lounge, which make your day-trips return always a bit more pleasant. I stayed in two different rooms, both had amazing views from the back fjords and that is what I will remember of that hotel. There is also a glass- roof room for leisure, which was nice to sit down and read a book 2 am with natural 24h light at the time. I can only imagine when it’s 24h darkness.

I can only give good references stating that Basecamp is AMAZING, but although the price is of a 5 stars resort, that is not the case for that place. If you are looking for something like this, it’s not Svalbard at all. Don’t even bother flying all that way. The place will give you much more to experience, but it’s definitely not because of the hotel-room itself!

Room Tip: Second floor, near to the glass-roof lounge.

Great hotel. We felt at home. Stunning decoration and very friendly staff, from the cleaning service to front-desk. Worth every single penny. They arranged all of our excursions and attended our requests. They are not driven by TIPS. Deeply recommended.

I stayed here for one night before a cruise around Svalbard.
The staff were excellent, very helpful, and the included breakfast was surprisingly good.
I would not want to stay here for more than a night though, as the rooms are not well laid out, and the curtains didn't do anything to block the 24 hours of sunlight - good for the "trapper" experience, but not so great for getting any sleep.

One warning - you have to take your shoes off before entering all hotels in Svalbard.
This is not a problem in itself, but it leads to a potentially dangerous issue - when walking downstairs to the breakfast room in socks, with slippery polished wood stairs, I was lucky not to suffer a serious injury when I slipped on the stairs.
If staying here, I recommend you use the main stairs, rather than the steeper stairs to the breakfast room.

One of the few places on earth where a bottle of milk is more expensive than beer in the supermarkets!

Great spot, great nearby steakhouse, really special "trappers" atmosphere and nice, clean rooms. When on Svalbard I would recommend this place or Mary Ann's Polarrigg which is also very special and nothing you've experienced before.

If you feel adventureous, take a snowmobile to Isfjord Radio all the way on the west coast. The old radio station have been restored to a hotel which is REALLY something special! Trips can be arranged from Trapper Lodge in Spitsbergen.

Beware of polar bears.

I was planning on staying in Longyearbyen for a couple of days before joining a Lindblad/National Geographic cruise. Staying at a small, quirky hotel in the centre of town appealed and it didn't disappoint. While the weather outside wasn't always ideal there was a very pleasant loft area to hide in until the weather changed again.
In Longyearbyen tradition dictates that you leave your outside shoes at the door. If you decide to wander around in socks be careful, especially with the back stairs from the breakfast room, as the polished floors can be slippery.
