“Terrific Introduction to Svalbard”
Reviewed 23 June 2014

I am not a huge fan of museums -- too many panels of painful prose put me to sleep -- but this is one fine museum. From the warm and enthusiastic welcome to the excellent historical overview, well-crafted exhibits and very attractive building, this museum won on all counts. Make sure you stop in. An hour here will provide an excellent overview of the natural and human history of the area.

“A must see”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

One of the not too many things to visit in Longyearbyen, the museum is a must. I visited on a Sunday, when everything else was closed, so was able to pick up a few souvenirs too. They had some really interesting exhibits and history, plus an awesome selection of books on the region.

“Spend at least 2 houts here on your first day”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

Great museum that really fills you in on the history and context of Svalbard. A good way to start your visit as it puts everything into context. Also note they have all the 1:100000 maps for sale here if you are off on trips (this is as detailed as they get). Give yourself a good 2 hours to do the place justice.

“Svalbard Museum - a must visit!”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

I loved the museum and I'm not always big on these. Very well set out and a lot of effort to introduce people to the surrounding area/history of items, take the time to read the information, it is clearly laid out and you can see close up key items around animals etc you are likely to see.

“Great Museum”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

Whilst there may not be a lot of history to Svalbard, what there is this museum is happy to promote from the first settlers through to the modern day.

Lots of exhibits (quite a few stuffed animals) and a great way to get an introduction to Svalbard
