“Good value,clean & comfortable accomodation”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

My wife and I stayed here for one night before joining a G Adventures arctic cruise and found the rooms to be very clean and comfortable and the other guests very friendly. The shared bathrooms were not a problem as there were plenty of them and they too were kept spotlessly clean. The reception staff were friendly and helpful and the free tea/coffee and DIY waffles were much appreciated in such an expensive location (only available till reception closes in the evening). The kitchens in each block allow you to prepare a meal if you wish, with food brought with you or from the local supermarket. It is an easy 20 minute downhill walk into the town centre, such as it is, and we did it with our suitcases in about 40 minutes having a good look at other hotels etc on the way.
Breakfast is included and is not bad at all, with nice breads, cereals, yogurt, cold meats and cheeses, tea, coffee and fruit juices. For a very reasonable fee you can also make yourself a packed lunch and fill a flask with coffee.
I wouldn't say you need too much time in Longyearbyen but its nice to have a day before and/or after a cruise. We did the 2 hour taxi/minibus tour in the afternoon following our lunchtime arrival and it was very good (can be booked on line before you go). Finally, the trip from airport to guesthouse was easy, taking the airport bus which meets the incoming flights and drops at all the main accommodations (60 NOK each).

The rooms at the Spitsbergen guesthouse are basic but adequate for a cheap stay on Svalbard where many things can be prohibitively expensive. You stay in converted miners huts from the 1940's and it is a 15 minute walk down a long bleak road to the main town centre of Longyearbyen. Staff are very friendly and will help you book excursions. There is a small gift shop and plenty of reading material about the island. Remember to take your shoes off before entering anywhere on Svalbard. The place seemed full of students and research people when I was there, who can get quite rowdy. I travelled in August and stayed for 4 nights, it was busy and I was moved from room to room daily. Also in August there is 24hour sunlight, so pull the curtains and try your best at falling asleep. The sun shines directly down the valley around 2am. It isn't cold in August and there is barely any snow. Breakfasts were really good.

...if you cannot care less about the 10 min walk along ng the straight road, but all you care is a comfy bed, nice breakfast than this is it. Cheap, convinient and the staff is extremely friendly and hospitable. The building is a bit old, but Hej you living in a dynamic heritage site practically. I saw two Svalbard reindeers having their breakfast just a few meters from where I had breakfast. It's all I need, what would be your choice?

This is a nice hotel, does the job perfectly, yes you are a little out of town but lets face it town isn't big and it's easy enough to walk to. I shared a twin room with an "unknown" traveller I was joining an artic cruise with and it was fine, had a private bathroom, not shared to a floor, so all fine. The room was very clean and warm and that's what you are looking for, it was big enough with a decent view, breakfast had everything you could look for. Staff were helpful. I would stay here again no problems.

That is propobly the cheapest accomodation in Longyearbyen but there is nothing to complain about.
Rooms are quite big, exept shared bathrooms you have a sink in the room. everything is very clean . rooms are also being cleaned every day. Common kitchen is very well equiped.
Breakfast are incredibly reach. you can full your stomach for long hours and get ready for cold and wind :)
It is a bit far from city center ( if we can call it that way ) but the view is nicer as you can see the whole area from the hight.

My friend and I stayed at Spitsbergen Guesthouse 4 nights in May 2014.

The staff was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The facilities were spotless. The twin room we had in building 1 was roomy, simple and clean as were the shared bathrooms/restrooms. There was a large choice of quality food for breakfast.

It was possible to book activities directly at the reception.

The guesthouse is located slightly outside Longyearbyen (20-min walking distance).

We highly recommend this place and will definitely book it again if we come back to Svalbard.

My brother and I stayed for 5 nights . Bjorn and Ida on reception were great . They were so helpful it made trip . Free tea and coffee all day . A number of reviews moan about distance to town . It's a 10 min walk on a straight road . All excursions collect you from hotel and the scenery is lovely . If you are worried about such a short walk I would suggest visiting an Arctic island isn't for you . Breakfast is buffet and excellent . If you have rifles as we did reception will look after them . I cannot praise staff enough 5 star service for a value price .
