I was in town for my cousin's wedding, and had planned to share a room with two friends who also attended it, as there were several events going on in town at the same time. The Crown was fully booked and no rooms were available anywhere else.
The room had only two beds, so one of my friends asked the management to place a cot in the room, which they did. However, a "cot" in British English is what we in the States call a baby crib! (Tip: A British English to American English dictionary is very handy - wish we'd had one)!
After a couple of minutes of maniacal laughter, we found the manager (I think his name is Peter) and described what we really wanted. He said that was no problem, but also told us that there had been a last minute cancellation of a single room, and he offered it to me for 45 pounds (10 quid discount off the normal price of 55 pounds). I opted for the room.
We had a couple of pints in the hotel pub with Peter, who told us about the history of the hotel (built in 1785), what they've done to it since buying it in 2007, and what they plan to do before they're done. Nice fellow and good beer.
The room is pretty small. There's a twin bed, tiny bathroom, nightstand, TV and a tea kettle. But it was entirely adequate. The bed was comfortable, the room was clean, the bathroom was spotless and the shower was good and hot. And there's the intangible benefit of staying in a hotel that's older than my country. Overall, a great little place. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat.
