Stopped in after a session riding in the forest. I sat in the bar which was quiet and cosy. The bar food menu is really good and the Cross Keys combo which I had was awesome tasty - huge and great value!

Family went to cross keys for fathers day. Food was nice but the overall experience was let down by extremely poor service. Asked if we would like any sauce to go with dinners then forgot to bring any over. Brought out vegetables in a separate dish, plenty of turnip but only a handful of carrots between 5 of us. Waited a long time for plates to be cleared and had to ask several times for dessert menu to which we waited another 20minutes for. Rhubarb crumble was just crushed up biscuits sprinkled on the top. Service has really put us of visiting again especially since it was quite at the time we visited.

Haven't been here for 6 or 7 years and decided to drop in after a long walk in Hamsterley Forest. The last 5 times I had been, the food, the service and the general ambiance were always great. I was dreading going in case things had changed.....as they often do. I must congratulate all involved in the 2 hours spent at the Cross Keys. The girl at the bar, a recent graduate in PR I understand, excelled in the provision of a friendly, efficient and welcoming service. The food, as always had a nice touch of the home cooked about it, which is always what I loved about the place. A traditional menu in a traditional pub, at reasonable prices and only 3 mins drive from Hamsterley Forest. Is the food Egon Ronay? No, will it be the Best Meal you aver eat? No. Great service, homely food in comfortable settings, in a beautiful location. A GREAT BIG THUMBS UP for the Cross Keys.

This is a great place for well kept good quality real ales and well cooked affordable pub food.
We had the Wednesday 2 steaks for 11.95 with the optional bottle of house wine for £7
The steaks were good quality coming with onion rings in the price also( not sneaked in as extras for a couple of quid)you would be hard pushed to do it at home for less money, but with the added bonus of a couple of pints of real ale as my starter . Don't expect miracles at the price, but you are getting locally produced beef, home cooked food as opposed to if you went to the chain type"pubs" like The March Hare in St Helens where it would be South American Zebu masquerading as beef with frozen chips( excellent home cooked chips at The Cross Keys)
Great service from Lucy and Vicki also!

This place is rated number 1 in Hamsterley because its the only place to eat in Hamsterley.
Id rate it number 2 because the B&B I stayed at made better food.
The pub is nice with good beers and after reading the reviews i was looking forward to some good pub grub. We had a table of four with two having the black pudding for starters and two having mussels. I thought the black pudding was very nice but the two mussel dishes were incredibly salty and gritty. For the main we had two chicken & leek pies and two mince with dumplings. the chicken and leek pies looked great and the filling was tasty but i have never tasted pastry like it before. It was like a slab of very dry stale bread and the chips were burnt but very soggy. (after reading other reviews about the soggy chips) There really isn't any excuse to keep serving them.
The mince dishes had tasty mince on them but the dumplings was basically a very big, dry scone.
There were elements of the meal that were nice but the elements that were not good were very poor.
I don't think it would be too hard to make good pub grub.
