There seems to be a plethora of White Horses around this area so just to make it clear, this review is for THELNETHAM White Horse.
This pub has changed hands several times over the last year or two but I think we've now got somebody who can do it properly.
Peter is a fantastic chef and his mother, Veronica, is the main face behind the bar.....very polite and efficient although she was a little scared in the first few weeks, this being their first pub.
For pub food, this has got to be one of the best meals in the area currently. The ales are excellently kept with 4 local ones on. Great to see that something a little more adventurous than Southwold and IPA is being served.....long may it last. There's also a real cider on at all times albeit one of the Weston's range.
The atmosphere was like a friendly, peaceful local should be with a good number of people in, both drinking and eating.
The restaurant is currently quite small however so booking is well advised especially if travelling far. Waitresses are quite young and inexperienced but very polite.....we all started somewhere and I'm sure with Veronica's guidance they'll do well.
My only comment (not a criticism) is that the mackerel with pickles was slightly heavy on the pickles and light on the mackerel. Well recommended however.
This place will be very popular!
Good luck to them both.

John

John, thanks very much for your extensive review last May. Apologies for the late reply, we have been working on training our staff, getting the kitchen better organised and general improvements on the pub itself. Ales and ciders are still kept in the same way and we rotate our guest ale weekly, trying to introduce locally brewed beers when we can. That and our regular menu changes make our White Horse worth regular visits. Hope to see you again soon!

Stopped for a mid-week lunch (nb only open Wednesday to Sunday) and thought the choices on the menu were superb. Interesting, fresh and appetising. I had felafel with celariac coleslaw which was very good. They had the best crisps (Fairfields Farm) I have ever had, wonderful staff, a great ambience on a small side road, but on the national bike route 30. Highly recommended.

It's good to hear someone appreciates the crisps as well as the food. They come up to The White Horse from Colchester in Essex and we are also great fans! We are very glad to hear that you had a good experience and thank you for pointing out that we are positioned on the national bike route 30. We do encourage cyclists to take their break with us when they are coming along the route. Thanks very much for your review!

Veronica and Peter have recently taken over this country pub in the beautiful Suffolk village of Thelnetham. Veronica is the friendly face of the pub and Peter, her son, is the chef. Under their management the pub has come back to life. There is a good range of beers, all well kept and with a good range of guest ales. The food is excellent and very well presented. I have been coming to this pub for 17 years and it is great to have people who care about what they do running it again.

Thanks very much for your brilliant review. You sum up what Veronica and Peter are all about. Since your review there have been positive changes to the interior of the pub and 2016 will be no different. They are determined to improve the pub/dining experience for their patrons all the time.
