Balthazar is a little place tucked away in the backstreets of Holt, all bricks and beams and low ceilings. The kitchen sits between the two halves of the restaurant and is completely open -- it more closely resembles a domestic rather than commercial kitchen.

In this it is emblematic of the whole establishment and experience of eating there - Balthazar is a homey, welcoming place, superbly overseen by Nina, who cooks, and John who manages the 'front of house'.

The food, too, is homey in the best sense of the word - the menu might be described as 'Mediterranean comfort food'. It is, as others have noted, small -- something I take to be a strength, as everything is fresh and cooked to order. Several dishes remain fairly constant -- such things as olives, hummus, patatas bravas, meat balls, a charcuterie plate -- and these are supplemented by a couple of specials that change frequently. On our most recent visit we had a salmon/prawn pilaf special and the meatballs. Both were delicious. The desserts change frequently - on recent visits we have had lemon posset, double chocolate torte, a meringue roulade and all have been exceptional.

The food is complemented by a small, but very good selection of wines, beers (Italian, Belgian, American and English are all represented) and spirits.

The atmosphere, as I have suggested is relaxed and friendly, a delight -- the tone set by the conviviality of Nina and John as hosts.

If you are visiting Holt and tired of the posh this and posh that (with prices that outstrip quality by some distance) then try Balthazar - it is one of the lovely and mercifully unpretentious places to eat; a real gem and not to be missed.

Have now been several times to this lovely little wine bar both for food and just a drink. It is a super place and I would happily recommend it to anyone. The menu is admittedly limited, but this is offset by the fact that everything is freshly cooked and lovely. The staff are excellent and friendly and the choice of wine is good. I note that one reviewer complained about the fact that children were not allowed in. Well I say 'cheers' to that! This is not a bar where children should be. It is too small and intimate and youngsters would ruin the relaxed style of the place.

This is a fabulous restaurant which has a limited menu, however; it is extremely tasty and everything is freshly home cooked. The owners are extremely friendly and cannot do enough for you. I cannot recommend this place highly enough, with a great wine list and a fantastic relaxed ambience.
