“left something to be desired”
Reviewed 10 March 2011

my partner and i were recomended this restaurant as this was for a special occasion and wanted somewhere suitable to fit the bill. To say we were disapointed would be an understatement. We ordered a bottle of wine which took 15mins to arrive. we then ordered a starter that took so long to arrive the bottle of wine had been consumed. if we were been cynical we would say this was almost intentional ans yes another bottle was ordered before we had our main course if you could call a stodgy overcooked pizza edible. To complete the farce who we believe to have been the propreitor sat down with a couple next to us and was totally oblivious to the goings on around her.

Complacent is the word that springs to mind bearing in mind the distinct lack of like minded quality alternatives in the resort. I`d like to think we were unlucky but cant honestly conclude this was the case.

Thanks for spoiling our special night

“Great for coffee, lunch and dinner”
Reviewed 21 February 2011

Over a couple of years we have been here several times often for morning coffee and occasionally lunch but now we have completed the full service and had dinner there. Always excellent.

Have just returned from a weekend to Hunstanton and our third visit to Chives.
This restaurant is one of my favourites. The staff are friendly and the service is very good. A good choice of food and very reasonable prices. The steak is superb. A good selection of wines to compliment your meal.
Well worth a visit.

“Probably the only real quality restuarant in Hunstanton”
Reviewed 22 June 2010

Now please don't get the wrong impression, there are lots of traditional seaside type restaurants that offer value for money in Hunstanton and a few pub/hotels that offer good hearty food but from our on-the-ground research this is probably the only decent brasserie type restaurant in the town centre and it's a little gem.

We had tried to get into one each of seaside and pub/hotel that evening but both in mid-June had stopped doing food at 8pm so it was on to Chives, having spotted it the previous night. We weren't disappointed. There was a very interesting menu with something for everyone. I'd challenge any other restaurant in the town to do a starter of pigeon breast marinated in Jack Daniels, sat on black pudding, and present such a quality offering at such a reasonable price. My wife ordered halibut for main course but then the head chef came out on bended knee to apologise that they were out of halibut, but came up with loads of off-menu alternative fish suggestions and my wife enjoyed a delicious piece of salted cod on samphire and asparagus.

For this well-cooked, well-served and totally different 2-course meal with wine and tip we paid about £55 and felt this was excellent value. We had looked at a few out-of-town gastro establishments and these would have been nearer £100 than £50 so Chives does offer excellent value.

The brasserie is equally suitable for a couple of drinks during the evening and in the day is a more relaxed cafe.

We're very pleased to be the first to recommend this restaurant and hope others will follow in our footsteps.
