“3 star hotel charging 4 star prices for a 2 star room!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 August 2012

Stayed for 2 nights in August 2012.

Good location for exploring the North Norfolk Coast, and very nice breakfasts.

However, please don't be swayed by the impressiveness of the entrance to the hotel. The bedroom we stayed in (room 11), was in a dire need of an upgrade. Although a comfy bed, there were holes in the wall and mouldy wood in the panelling around the bath. The bathroom was quite unpleasant.

Generally, the room was very run down, and did not justify the price.

Whilst waiting to speak to a receptionist, I was also witness to a bizarre argument between the housekeeper and the receptionist about being short-changed in her pay packet - not a conversation that I expect the hotel would like their guests to be privy to.

We booked a family room on laterooms.com but we found by contacting the hotel directly we could have got an even better deal. Our room was in the older part of the property, on the ground floor, with two queen-sized beds and an additional fold up bed, which we didn't need. There was plenty of room for the four of us, and the bathroom was a good size too. The room had a fridge which didn't get beyond room temperature, a very noisy portable aircon unit, a sofa and an armchair. Modern design but a tiny, tiny window with no view and very little light. However the beds were comfy and the room was very clean. So clean that, for the first time in a long time of travelling, I left a tip for the cleaner.
The food is good here. We stayed for 3 nights, so had 3 breakfasts and two evening meals. The portions for the dinners are not huge but the food is fresh and well-cooked. The children's menu is very good, even for our fussy two, who cleared their plates. Breakfast is really nothing special. Eggs on half a roll, black pudding, bacon, fried (frozen) potato wedges, baked beans, tomatoes, sausages. Exactly the same every day. Good cereal bar, large bowls of tinned fruit and a very small amount of fresh. No muffins or breakfast rolls. A very tempermental pair of industrial toasters which either throw you an untoasted slice or one which is actually on fire. Toast is a bit of a gamble so I gave up and just had bread and honey! Service is good in the restaurant. Used plates are taken away very quickly and tea and coffee are brought as soon as you want it.
We would stay here again, but we would ask for a room either on the first floor or one without a room above. If you stay downstairs in the older part of the building, the creaking floorboards upstairs will drive you insane. For two nights we had to listen to an insomniac pacing the floor above at all hours. Not the hotel's fault, of course, but annoying all the same. You would not choose this hotel unless you were going out and about all day. The bar is comfortable and friendly but there is no view to while away the hours. No pool, no spa, no leisure facilities at all. We did walk to the beach, but is is quite a stomp over the sand dunes, so if you have mobility problems the '10 minute walk to the beach' is a real challenge. And it is uphill coming back. The hangers in our room had 'Caley Hall Motel' printed on them, and this is exactly what it is. A motel.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the chalet style rooms, or an upstairs room in the older part of the hotel.

Lovely hotel, it has a unique style, there is no main building where the rooms are, and they are all at the back of the restaurant and spread out. Some rooms like the one we had are up stairs, so if you need a ground floor room you must ask for one. The rooms we had was lovely very spacious and well decorated, we had a bathroom with a bath (no shower), we also had a fridge and aircon unit. The location is idea, only a short walk through the village to the beach or a short drive to Hunstanton. The food was nice but a tad expensive for the portion size and breakfast was more that adequate and a nice choice. Staff were fantastic, reception staff were really good no problems on check in/out, bar staff were very helpful and friendly.

All in all I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this hotel we had a lovely stay.

Room Tip: Some rooms are upstairs and have a bath no shower, so you need to ask if you want these things.

This hotel is on the out- skirts of Hunstanton,so too far to walk to theatre. The staff were very welcoming and the bar meals were excellent. The room was a 3/4 person occupancy, it was perfect for our needs, comfortable kingsize beds, robes, large bathroom with plenty of hot water. Breakfast was also excellent.

Clean rooms, great location, smart interior. Nice meals at dinner and good breakfast.
Stopped in room b3. Tidy and well lit with natural light. Im on orange/tmobile and get very very poor signal in hunstantonhunstanton. No data at all. So if you want use of free wifi and using phone, b3 signal not great.

Thank you for your review. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. With regards to the phone signal this is unfortunately a regular problem with the hunstanton area although we do offer free wifi within the hotel in an attempt to improve the situation.
We hope to welcome you again in the future.

Have just returned from a two night weekend stay at Caley Hall Hotel. I couldnt say I was totally happy because I wasnt. Although the public rooms are well presented the entrances to the hotel dont seem as if they have been swept for days. The hotel also allows animals & it just seemed as if every third set of guests had a dog which you didnt want to tread on. People who are not dog lovers (yes there are plenty of us out there) do not like to think that the room you stay in was occupied by a dog the previous night.and need assurance of that. And the bathroom sink overflow & plug hole were making me feel ill. Generally the bathroom in the room I was in needed a makeover.
I didnt eat in the evening at the hotel so I cannot comment but the breakfast appeared to be prepared & put out too early so that the heaters dry some stuff up. I bypassed the english breakfast on the second morning. Not fresh or tasty enough.
All in all I expected more for the price.

Thank you for your review, it is always a concern when a guest appears unhappy with their stay and we strive to make any improvements necessary.

With regards to the comments concerning dogs, we are a dog friendly hotel however we do provide a number of rooms throughout the hotel which are strictly no dog rooms and we always meet the requests of a guest who specifically books one. We will look at promoting this option more prominently. - The bathrooms are due for re-decoration, this is a gradual proccess however but some have already been done.

Breakfast should be freshly prepared each morning and regularly replenished to prevent any "drying up" and as other reviews seem to compliment our breakfast I would assume this is done as normal practice, we will certainly look into the reason this appears not to have happened during your stay.

We hope to perhaps welcome you again to Caley Hall and rectify these issues.

We had a lovely stay last weekend at the Cally Hotel, lovely position just a short walk to the beach. The food was lovely especially Dinner, but husband would have liked creme brûlée which wasn't on menu but you can't have everything. Breakfast good, service good. Only one complaint mattress was old and saggy, didn't sleep that well, this was a shame let down an otherwise lovely stay

Thank you for your review.

We are pleased to hear that overall you appear to have enjoyed your stay, it is unfortunate that there was a problem with your mattress particularly if it prevented a good nights sleep. we will look into this and replace the mattress if necessary, thank you for bringing it to our attention.

It is a shame that your husband wasn't able to sample one of chefs creme brulees as they are a fairly consistent dish on our menu, due to rotating the dishes in order to keep our menu fresh it would appear that he missed out on this occasion, hopefully you will visit again and have more luck, you could even request upon booking and we would make sure we can accomodate you.

We hope to see you in the future.
