Located on Station Street, quite literally by the rail station, my wife and I ate here several times during September 2013. Originally attracted to the Jolly Tar in the early afternoon by a noticeboard advertising home-made steak pie, this had been removed when we returned later for supper. However, as we were being seated I commented on this, and learned that there were only two slices of pie left. We immediately ordered these. I had chips and peas with my pie while my wife chose to have it with vegetables, which turned out to be two halves of a boiled potato, four quarters of a roast potato, carrots and peas. Although plain, the food was well cooked and more than plentiful leaving us no room for a desert. Having learned our lesson, we returned very hungry the following day for another main dish and the sherry trifle desert. On our third visit we had had a wonderful spotted dick and custard for desert. While good food is an important contributor to the quality of a restaurant experience, so also is the attitude of the staff. Sharon, our hostess, made it an overall great experience, and we would not hesitate to eat there again if the opportunity presents itself.
