“Amazing boutique hotel”
Reviewed 19 October 2012

I stayed at Strattons in September and what an amazing place. This boutique hotel was a sheer delight. I loved all the finishing touches, the design of our room was quirky yet classy. The service was outstanding and breakfast was lovely. We also got an upgrade on arrival...couldn't have asked for more. I highly recommend this hotel :)

We have visited Strattons on a couple of occasions now, and each visit has been a real treat. The hotel has a range of different rooms on offer, and both Opium and Boudoir were gorgeous! Very comfortable beds, spacious rooms with everything you need.

The restaurant service has been great, both at breakfast time and in the evening, and the food was delicious!

I would highly recommend the hotel to anyone. It's a quirky and luxurious hotel with friendly staff. Can't wait until my next visit!!

Just returned from a two night stay at Strattons and We were so disapointed, I'm writing the first review I've ever posted. That says a lot!
Firstly, I have to say that the hotel does look great from the outside and even inside is quite nice. we stayed in coco 2, not a bad room at all.

However, we had opted for the midweek special, dinner bed and breakfast and this is where it all started to go wrong. The restaurant severely lacks atmosphere, it's quite low grade in feel with no table clothes and a very limited menu. The waitress was surely and unhelpful. I had the scotch egg as the starter, which was ok, if a little weird and a complete ripp off at £8. My partner had the rarebit with crab, this was completely burnt and the harsh mustard just overwhelmed any other flavour. It was inedible! next up were the main courses, both of which were utterly terrible, badly cooked, mismatched ingredients and just plain disgusting. We were so hacked off by his time, we walked out and agreed to only pay for the wine and one starter. What a ruined night!
The breakfasts were ok ish, nothing special and not even orange juice was available. I have genuinely stayed at hundreds of hotels and i'd say this was the poorest value I have ever experienced. Receptionist was polite and helpful but I won't ever return and I cannot recommend a stay here, there are many better places available.

I had read many reviews of Stratton's which seemed to indicate that people either love it, or hate it, so we set out for our weekend with some trepidation. We stayed in the Red Room, which was exactly like it looks on the website, opulent, sexy, enormous and totally stunning in every respect. That room is worth every penny.

Service from all staff was prompt, courteous and efficient, Charlie (the Manager) was superb and deserves the praise she is given. Within a minute of asking for more coal for our fire, it was delivered.

The food was just as good as the room, perhaps better. My husband has eaten at some of the best restaurants in the UK (Heston Blumenthal, Gordon Ramsey) and declared the Roe Deer dish from Saturday 6th October better than anything he had eaten elsewhere. A good amount of choice, cooked in an inventive way and served by staff who don't try to rush you out of the door. Not cheap - but worth every penny.

The hotel guide warns that certain times can be very busy for the restaurant and asks that if you don't want to wait, you avoid those times. We did - not sure why TrebleOne who criticized a long wait for breakfast couldn't have done the same.

Stratton's is like a little oasis in the middle of Swaffham which to be honest, is not an attractive town. Run down, many closed shops and not a lot going on, hence, we chose to eat in the hotel restaurant on both nights of our stay - which was definitely the right thing to do.

Small gripes would be :

1. No shower in the Red Room (a lovely, big bath), but a luxury shower would surely suit today's guest better?

2. No proper wardrobe either (a curtained-off area was provided). The room was soooo huge, a proper wooden wardrobe, in keeping with the style of the room could surely fit somewhere in it?

My 40th Birthday break was perfect and I will be recommending Stratton's to friends for their special occasions and we will certainly return again to try another unique and special suite.

Room Tip: There are 7 suites, all individually themed. Based on my experience in the Red Room I would recommen...

My partner and I stayed in the Opium Suite - a midweek deal including dinner and breakfast. The room was heaven - separate from the main hotel and allowed for pure indulgence in the luxurious surroundings. The a la carte menu had just enough choice and Charlie (Manager) was friendly and her customer service was brilliant (as was the rest of the staff). All ingredients are sourced locally and it's fantastic to see the best of Norfolk on offer. It's a shame we couldn't stay for more than one evening.

Stayed two nights while at wedding at High Hall. Current owners claim to have been at the hotel since 1990; the quality of the decor would suggest that this was the last time it was decorated. Odd, quirky rooms, not particularly clean. Disgraceful at this price not to have a box of tissues in the room. Dowdy, unwelcoming lounge for pre dinner drinks. Menus were delivered but not a wine list - why? So we had to wait for a glass of wine with our starter and were nearly finished this dish before the wine arrived! This is basic stuff, not rocket science.
Breakfast on day two was shambolic with every table full. Had to ask for breakfast menus, which we then shared with other table. Had to ask three times for toast and my wife's scrambled egg was not cooked! Toast eventually arrived - only two slices!!
Very amateurish service, with poor attention to detail or thought suggests a lack of attention by owners - get out there on the shop floor and see your hotel as we, the punters see it.
Overall, poor decor and poor service adds up to poor value for money - avoid
Only saving grace was very helpful receptionist who helped arrange a taxi for us.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else!

What a strange approach to the gracious Stratton Hotel, down a drive next to the Fish and Chip Shop on the High St! Lovely rooms , helpful staff when health problems forced a room change.
Wouldnt really have liked to have used the badly scratched bath in the Red Room, would have liked to have browsed the library there but books behind locked screens? The gardener must have been on holiday most of the summer and what a terribly disappointing breakfast on the second morning.Crucified tomatoes, burnt bacon and ravaged poached eggs. The £20 room reduction didnt really make things right but then £50 would not have either, shame how things stick in your mind.
