“Late summer break”
Reviewed 3 October 2013

This was a wonderful place for a late summer break with our two cocker spaniels. Very dog friendly and our room opened up into the pub garden which was great. Very helpful staff and good service. The pub is close to the beach and there are a number of fantastic dog walks. Food was great and we enjoyed the local cider.

Room Tip: The garden room is great for dogs

We've been coming to the Suffolk coast since the 1970s, usually staying in Walberswick but more recently Aldeburgh, so know the area well, yet had never stayed at The Ship in Dunwich.

We had had lunch at The Ship a couple of times before (excellent) so decided to try it for a one night stop-over to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

We checked if we could bring one of our dogs, which we could - as Dunwich is a particularly dog friendly place.

We arrived for lunch. A very busy pub but served quickly. A bit taken-aback at £29 for two "average" ploughmans and and one and a half pints of Adnums.

We had taken the last room available on the first floor overlooking a rear courtyard which suffered from severe solar gain, being south facing. Rather noisy too, but not a bother for us - it is a pub after all! It was a small room but that was not a problem either. All rather cosy. Sadly, the bathroom was rather grim. The bath had seen better days and the toilet seat was cracked, split and hence rather unhygienic.

Saturday pm. After a wonderful walk along the windswept beach and a stroll through the derelict friary we had dinner in the bar. Fantastic starters, plus fish and chips and 3 pints of Adnums too. How come this came to £35 after such an expensive lunch?

I had a good night's sleep but my wife found the room just too hot for comfort.

Sunday, another brisk and very windy walk on the beach, followed by an excellent English breakfast. Throughout our stay the (young female) staff were simply outstanding. Welcoming, efficient and friendly and constantly made a fuss of our beagle. Service in the bar area was nothing less than excellent.

Summary.

Bear in mind this is an AA 2 Star establishment - an "inn" not an hotel. Good value. Excellent staff (and I mean really excellent). And (generally) good food and beer too. Cosy.

Our bedroom was very clean but....our bathroom needed an upgrade. The only real "fly in the ointment".

Verdict: Recommended. Hopefully, - as part of a hotel group - the bathroom issue will get attended to.

Nipped into the Ship after a lovely walk with my two children and Dad for a quick 1/2 a pint and a warm up. After spending money on the drinks we were told no children in the bar, we sat in the conservetory which was chilly and all the tables were grubby, so we sat outside which was cold. Thanks for the warm welcome.
If you're going to take someones money have the decency to explaine the rules firsts.
OK if you own a snappy barking dog by the way, there were three in the bar, all barking at each other and the pub even supplied free dog biscuits!

Had a great lunch here a few days ago, our dog was welcomed warmly too. Would definitely visit again. Fish was extremely fresh, chips perfdct and the choice of puddings was fantastic! No hesitation in recommending The Ship

We were attracted to The Ship as the location sounded wonderful, which it was, so close to the beach, and the Alastair Sawday write up was glowing. I feel that his inspectors cannot have been there for some time.

Our main disappointment was the restaurant and bar. The bar was ok, but not very clean. The dining room is terrible, no atmosphere, dead flowers on the tables, and not much service. All orders are placed at the bar, the waitresses will not even take an order for coffee! Breakfast in the dining room was as basic as could be. They could do so much better with very little effort.

Our room was small, which was fine for two nights, the bathroom very nice. However, it overlooked the courtyard so we could be seen from there, and it was noisy.

There was no evidence of a manager which could be part of the problem.
We dined at the Westleton Crown on the second night which could not have been a greater contrast. Wonderful service, fantastic food and really nice dining rooms and terrace. If we go back to that area we will definitely stay there.

Food was average, although portions not too generous, particularly given the prices. However, service was appalling - not all of our food arrived as order was taken wrongly, and, rather than trying to be helpful, waitress was extremely rude.

Matthew G, General Manager at The Ship at Dunwich, responded to this review, 1 November 2013
There are times when we are really happy to just hold up our hands and say that sometimes we get things wrong. However on this occasion I am afraid I disagree with the overtones of this review.

It paints a picture of a general lack of care and customer service and I promise readers of this review that this is never the case with either myself or any of my team. We are all very proud of our pub and always want the very best for anyone who chooses to come and experience what we have to offer.

We admit that a mistake was made with the original order and that two meals didn’t arrive at the same time, this was sorted promptly and the meals arrived as quickly as we could get them to you. We always cook all our food to order so it does take a little time to get from the fridge to your table. I personally apologised to you at the time, and you accepted my offer of a full refund for the two late meals.
To say our service was appalling I believe is unfair - we made a mistake and did everything to correct this, which was what happened and how we would deal with such a situation if it were to happen again. Service and our guests having a great experience is always our primary aim.

My wife & I & a friend took our collective 4 grandchildren to Southwold for 3 days having hired a lovely beach hut & we used The Ship @ Dunwich as our overnight base for 2 nights.
The staff @ the hotel were very friendly & made us welcome; the room my wife & I had with our 2 grandchildren was called Greyfriars & was very comfortable, the large bathroom was wet room style with a roll top bath.
All 7 of us had 2 evening meals & 2 breakfasts & the food was great and eaten in a very relaxed atmosphere.
Nice garden for the children to play in....as long as you take your own bats & balls etc.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Once a haunt of smugglers, The Ship Inn isn't just a great place to eat, drink, relax and get away from it all – we like to think it's also part of a great story. Now a quiet, idyllic village surrounded by nature reserves, heathland and beach, only the romantic ruins of Dunwich monastery remain to hint at the fate of this once thriving medieval port claimed by the waves during a terrible storm. It's said you can still hear the peal of the church bells beneath the waves. While we can't guarantee that, there are certain, more earthly things we're always happy to provide… real ales, real food and a real fire. You will find: a great pub, home-cooked food in our restaurant, a cosy hotel with comfortable, traditionally furnished bedrooms, some with views across the sea or marshes. There is also an enormous garden dotted with fruit trees (including our 300 year old fig tree) and a beach that really is just a couple of minutes walk away. Whether you want to use it as a base to explore this wild and wonderful coastline, enjoy some of the best fish and chips on the Suffolk coast or simply indulge in a pint or two of Adnams, The Ship Inn at Dunwich extends the warmest of welcomes. ... more   less
