“Good to be back!”
Reviewed 11 July 2014

It's always good to come back to the Orwell, feels like home. The service as always was very good, especially the lovely young man at the bar, who looked after me despite all the rowdier people demanding drinks. Maybe it was the grey hair! All the staff are very patient and tolerant of us 'racing folks'. The new breakfast layout is very good, as was the food itself, really set me up for a day's Hot Rod racing at Foxhall Heath Stadium, Ipswich. Thanks again to all.

Room Tip: Away from the kitchens.

The Hotel is dire need of a lot of TLC and a maintenance schedule to revamp the whole hotel is required as it is very dated. In most of the areas of the hotel, including the bedrooms there is a need for a lot of cleaning to be done. For instance, the bathrooms extractor fans which do not work need a good clean, the grouting in the bathrooms need a good clean and the window sill in the bedroom has not been cleaned in weeks. The carpets and curtains throughout need a good clean

We came back from a day out only to find the towels still strewn over the room and the ones in the bathroom had not been folded. The bed duvet had been pulled up BUT the bed had not been made with the throw and cushions still on the floor.

The shower was only a trickle and I had to dance around getting wet.

The cigarette butts in the garden by the entrance had been there for some while and looked unsightly.

Room Tip: Car Park side is quieter, of course.

This was our second visit to the Orwell Hotel and I am sorry to say that it was not at all like our first visit. We had to book a suite on the second floor as there were no other rooms available because there was a wedding on that weekend. The decor and appearance was very tired but the room looked clean and tidy. The bathroom was huge but had a very small shower cubical with a large rainfall shower head above. When trying to shower I could only just manage to close the cubicle door behind me and the water just trickled out of the huge shower head! There were a pair of rusty old scales in the bathroom which look very dated and dirty, the room would look better without them. The towel rail was loose and the windows were all rotten. For a suite we expected better! We stayed for two nights and when we came back to our room after a day out we could see that the bed had been made but the quilt had just been pulled up over the bed, the quilt cover had not been smoothed out at all and the pillow underneath was all scrunched up how I had left it. New towels were left on the bed but one of the bath towels had a really dirty mark all over one corner, we had to phone reception to get a replacement. The towels have really seen better days! The throw for the sofa was left on the floor and the hair dryer was left in the middle of the desk where I had left it that morning. I have stayed in a lot of hotels and this was the worst room cleaning I have ever seen! We were very sad to see that the standards have dropped from our last visit as the Orwell is a lovely old hotel and the breakfast's are normally very good.

We stayed for just one night as we were in Felixstowe for a wedding. Me, my husband and our two children had a suite on the second floor. As in stated in previous reviews, the rooms are a little dated but the room, bedding, towels and bathroom were clean and that's the main thing. We were allowed to check in an hour earlier than stated which was a great help and enabled us to change for the wedding in our room rather than having to travel in our wedding outfits. Breakfast was great with plenty of choice. Friendly staff. Would stay again.

The hotel communal areas are lovely and take you back the the victorian era of elegance and opulence. Unfortunately our double room on the first floor was dated and in need of decorating and updating. We booked a deluxe room as it was our 30 wedding anniversary, not sure how much worse a basic room could have been. Huge area of flaking paint, bath panel worn, overlooking giant roof fans. I wish we had booked a suite as they looked so much nicer.
However, the young female receptionist was lovely and by far the most welcoming. Breakfast was delicious and worth recommending. Sam in the restaurant was very polite, happy and helpful.
We would definitely come back but would book a suite.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and book a suite.

Needed to visit my elderly mum who lives in Felixstowe so came to the Orwell for the second time. Last time, I visited alone, but this time my husband was free to accompany me and as it was Valentine's the room was a bit more expensive and the dinner was too (to be expected). The room was nice and comfortable facing the roundabout, but no traffic noise. The Valentine's meal was beautifully presented and the food was good. The table was decorated with petals and crystals and the piano player was in attendance. Our only complaint was the shower, still a trickle, but the manager said on my last review, that this is being dealt with when the rooms are renovated. I forgot something in the car boot and went out early in the morning to retrieve it and saw the manager in reception who said hello....nice to see a manager who is approachable. Many of them are hidden behind a desk out of sight.
