“Fantastic stay”
Reviewed 27 August 2014

I have just stayed here recently. Staff were very friendly and hardworking trying to please me with all my needs. Wifi was very good and fast. The hotel style is ancient but at the same time charming. Needs a touch of modernity. but in fairness all was good and very clean. The gardens are well kept. And parking was great. They do have some wonderful staff and service was what anybody would expect

Quite a pleasant hotel mixing an old wing with a new addition. We were bed and breakfast so did not spend much time in the room which was spacious and reasonably appointed, if a little tired in decor. But it was adequate for the price.

But the breakfast service ( the only element of our stay there we were looking forward to) was awful. We dined at 09:00 when the restaurant was 60% full and told to sit anywhere we wished. The problem with this policy is that no-one now has any idea who might be next to serve. We were told the breakfast was a serve yourself buffet; we grabbed some stuff and sat back down. The restaurant suddenly got filled to near capacity. It was then a difficult task to attract someone who might want to serve us with tea and coffee. Others arrived after us, but got served quicker since they were on the route to and from the kitchen What staff were there seemed rushed off their feet.

We had finished our breakfasts before we attracted anyone to take a tea and toast order. I went up to get a sausage as there were none there when I first went up and, ages later, still none. Toast arrived but no tea. It was stone cold and there was no butter. We gave up on breakfast and checked out.

My wife asked as we were leaving " Aren't you going to ask us whether we enjoyed our stay"? and we were then asked and told them. "Well, the stay was sort of spoiled by the breakfast service" she said. "Well if you don't tell us we don't know. Someone did not turn up for work today"

It is hard to see that another three staff would have made difference to the rather shambolic service. It can't be that hard to prepare a table for customers with the basics on them, can it?

It just needs a bit of a kick to smarten itself up. It was reasonably priced, but I'd sooner pay another £5 per night on my room and them employ another couple of people to help them through those busy periods.

Room Tip: Do not get a bedroom above the function room; the hotel caters for weddings.

From the outside, a traditional welcoming hotel. Downhill from there. The young man at the desk said that he couldn't honour the price of the room as the person I booked it with had left, even though I had an email confirming the price. A chat to the manager sorted this out quickly. Unnecessary if you have staff who know what they're doing. The Orwell suite was shabby dirty and worse than any hostel I have stayed in. Wallpaper peeling off and worn carpet. Breakfast in the morning was limited as we arrived towards the end of the allocated times, there was very little left. The positives: location, easy parking, friendly staff (except the young man at reception) and the potential to be a great hotel if a lot money is spent updating it.

This hotel is amazing .Its an Edwardian hotel with all its original features. A Beautiful staircase lovely old fashioned atmosphere and lovely staff. We stayed here by accident and in fact got the last available room in the hotel. The room was a little 'tired' but it was part of its charm. Lovely old bamboo furniture and very comfortable beds. It was just lovely. We would go back and stay there anytime. The receptionist who checked us in, the waiting on staff all knew the meaning of the word service. Breakfast was really great with real quality products. If you are a fan of Travelodge don't go there. This is how hotels used to be many years ago. Full marks from us.

Room Tip: I am afraid I don't know anything about the other rooms in the hotel but ours was charming. I th...

Booked in advance before leaving OZ and got a fantastic rate. Booked a Suite Room and it was massive. Great comfortable bed and big bathroom. Free parking and plenty of space right at the entry to hotel. Easy to find via SatNav. Overall a good stay for us

Oh dear this is going steadily downhill since the last time I visited. I paid a premium price for the St. Julian suite which was really nothing like a suite at all. Just a bedroom and a bathroom with shower and toilet . The window frames were rotting and we overlooked a roof area tatty and littered with pipes, cables and tired looking skylights.Saturday night revealed a wedding for what appeared to be a crowd from heaven knows where with children running along corridors and amok in the loos.Noise from the ballroom(?) horrendous.

Room Tip: Book only from Monday to Thursday. Friday onwards is weddings and dances etc.

I went to the hotel restaurant for an evening meal with friends who live in Felixstowe at their recommendation. The hotel was quite old fashioned but with character. Food was above average. Staff was friendly. Overall quite a relaxing meal to unwind the day after a long drive from M25!
