“One of the Nicest Small Hotels I've Stayed In”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2014

Stayed for one night on the way to Newmarket Races. I totally disagree with the Pewterjuglady! We found the hotel and staff very inviting and welcoming. The hotel was very nicely decorated throughout with very tasteful furnishings etc. Although we didn't have an evening meal the restaurant catered very well for breakfast. The waitress definitely deserves a mention as she was very pleasant and made our breakfast experience one of relaxing pleasure. Unlike most other hotels I've stayed in (and there have been lots!), the Riverside breakfast was faultless - freshly cooked to order and most important for me - hot!!! I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone (especially convenient to Newmarket Racecourse which is 20 minutes away by car).

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel offer great views of the village.

My daughter had her wedding reception at the Riverside last week. It could not be faulted. The function room where the reception was held was light and looked out over the terrace and lawns, where there was plenty of tables and chairs outside for guests to go and sit after the meal, and seats beside the river and in the garden. The service was extremely efficient, calm, and friendly, the food at the wedding was excellent, - several guests commented on how good the food was, and how well organised everything was. A lot of guests stayed for at least 2 nights, and the rooms were beautiful, with very welcome, and quiet, airconditioning. The bed I slept in was extremely comfortable, and the bathroom was very modern, clean and had a spacious shower. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and nothing was too much trouble. We had an excellent lunch in the restaurant 2 days after the wedding, the food was very good, and the staff very helpful and friendly. I would not hesitate to recommend the Riverside, both as a venue for a wedding reception, and also to stay in. Absolutely top marks.

On arrival the ambiance looked inviting. Lots of cars and the outside terrace was full. Foyer looked stylish. That's where it ends.
Had to interrupt the young receptionist to check in as she was having a chat with the restaurant manager.
No apology or concern. Upstairs the room was acceptable although there were 'loom bands' under the bed in the family room. Obviously not been vacuumed. In fact they were there for the duration of 3 nights.
After returning from visiting family we noticed the car park empty. In fact everyone had disappeared. The only other people were a group of 4 having drinks in the bar.
We decided on a drink on the terrace to ponder where everyone was and had to wait whilst one of the bar staff made coffee and the other put glasses away. Was I really invisible?! No apology or attempt to serve me.

There was only one other table of four for breakfast. Hardly full. Soulless atmosphere throughout.

The following evening we returned to the hotel to be presented with a full car park. There was no where to park. It turned out there was a school staff party and I would have to pull over somewhere and move my car later that night. There is a sign clearly stating 'hotel residents only'. The restaurant manager came out and 'TOLD' me that she would walk my disabled mother into the hotel and I was to move my car later! Really??
To sum up.. This place is used solely as a wedding or function venue. If you are an individual then expect to be ignored. At no time were we addressed with a good morning, afternoon or evening. On checking out there was no question of how was our stay. After handing over 300 cash we simply drove out. The only person worthy of a mention was the mature breakfast waitress. Lovely lady. The rest of the staff I'm afraid are kids.. apart from the evening restaurant manager who was an old dragon. There is nothing in Mildenhall.. Drive through and look elsewhere. I have worked in business travel management for almost 20 years. Make of that what you will. Experience..

Ate here with a friend for lunch. Larger portions than I expected. Amazing food and staff was courteous and helpful. I will definitely be going back and will probably be getting the afternoon tea, which looked amazing.

Stayed one night after a day at Newmarket Races. A blistering hot day all we wanted was to check in and get in a shower. Check in was smooth and the bedroom was as requested at the back overlooking the garden nice neutral decor, comfy bed, roomy clean showerroom and best of all aircomditioned - it had been left on and the room temperature was an indicated 18 degrees C - pure bliss. However they had a wedding going on... we haden't checked, we should have - the restaurant was closed that evening, dissapointed after having looked at the menu we toured the streets and setteled on a Thai restaurant in easy walking distance. The reception girls were very helpful. The wedding ensued until the early hours, loudly, but you can't deny the bride her day.
Advice check before re restaurant closures and if you are a light sleeper. Breakfast was reasonable given the limited choice.

Room Tip: Check for weddings !

Our son had his wedding at the Riverside Hotel on 12th July and it was a marvellous occasion. The staff were very professional and helpful, the meal was first class and the bedrooms were beautiful. The grounds were looking wonderful and very well cared for. All my family were delighted with their experience.
At breakfast I complained that my eggs weren't to my liking and they were replaced with apologies.
We would not hesitate to recommend the hotel which has been refurbished to a very high standard and clearly cares about the opinions of the customers.
