“Good hotel, nice rooms and good team”
Reviewed 9 July 2014 via mobile

We have stayed in other Adnams owned establishments but this was the first time at The Crown Hotel. First impressions were good, the staff helpful and friendly (this should be a given but so many times it's not) and the atmosphere nice and relaxed. The room we had was characterful with beams and a cosy feel. The slight downside was it could have done with a bit more attention to cleaning, we switched on the fan in the room and you could see strands of cobwebs blowing about; for one night it wasn't worth mentioning but if we had been staying longer we would have.
The restaurant was good, again all the staff we're charming and service was excellent. The food was good but given the location and proximity to the sea and indeed the local harbour we couldn't help feeling a little disappointed that there was only sole and salmon on the menu. Breakfast, on the other hand, was probably the best we've experienced in a long time with the emphasis on locally sourced produce that was cooked perfectly. We'll definitely try again in the future.

Thank you for telling us about your recent stay. It’s lovely to hear that you enjoyed the dinner and breakfast during your time with us. We will certainly take your comments about having more fish options on board and perhaps add some choices in as daily specials or catch of the day. Thank you again for your feedback.

1 night B&B was £135 for 1 person.
Tried to check in at around 17:30 but nobody about... waited around for at least 30 mins before someone appeared, and even then they didn't apologise for the wait.
Room is good, nicely decorated, but small, plus only a 3/4 double bed. Good finishing touches - dressing gown etc. Bottle of water is apparently tap water - it had particles floating about in it.

The main problem arose when I wanted an early night - 21:45. My room (no. seven) was directly above the kitchen. The noise was terrible. Calls of "service" constantly. Banging and crashing. To top it all off, there was continuous emptying of bins which sounded like they were right outside my bedroom. The floorboards and door outside by room also creaked/banged v loudly. Eventually nodded off about 11:15.... only to be woken up at 05:55 to the emptying of wheelie bins outside. My colleague (in room 8) was also woken up by this and he actually got out of bed to see what the noise was - somone was wheeling the big Biffa bins over the cobbles!!

Breakfast was good. Fruit compote and delicious yoghurt, followed by boiled eggs. However, they put little woollen hats on top of the eggs, one of which was very dirty / covered in old egg. Yuk! They don't have a buffet for the cereal/muffins etc - you have to order them. Service was rather slow - not ideal if you are after a quick breakfast before leaving.

The lady on reception wrote down all our comments. I was hoping for an apology from the manager but have not heard back. I can honestly forgive most things, IF I get a good nights sleep. The previous night I had stayed in a hotel with room doors that wouldn't lock - not that I was overally bothered as I'd had a good nights sleep!

Overall, this hotel has the potential to be a little gem but it is seriously let down by the noise meaning a good nights sleep is impossible. I will NEVER stay here again - I would rather drive an extra hour!

Room Tip: Do not sleep in room 7 or 8! Extremely noisy.

We are incredibly sorry to hear that your stay was not as peaceful as one had wished. Being a restaurant with rooms this does mean that until 10pm our kitchen are very busy serving food and we are very sorry if the call for service was disturbing you throughout the evening of your stay. We wish all our guests to have a comfortable and peaceful stay and should our guests request a quiet room we allocate them to the second floor where there is little to no noise.
With regards to breakfast we offer table service to ensure that what we serve is of the highest quality and freshly prepared. We apologise if this meant that the pace was not as fast as you had hoped. We truly do hope that you try us again one day. We have taken your feedback on board and have now looked at closing the patio doors and windows below room 7 in order to limit the noise from the restaurant to the hotel room.

This is a great place to stay in the beautiful coastal town of Southwold. It's right in the middle of town, walking distance from the sea, from the great selection of restaurants & from the pubs selling scrumptious Adnams beer, as well as the Adnams Brewery itself.

The hotel has been refurbished to a very high standard & our room was incredibly clean & pretty & one of the most comfortable beds ever!

Room Tip: For those who are less mobile, it can be quite a hike to some of the rooms, along corridors, so you...

Just returned from 2 nights at the Crown. Rooms are outstanding.... Spacious, contemporary furnishing, and bathroom with power shower. First class service, and child friendly. I would definitely recommend if you are staying in Southwold for a few days.

We stayed for one night at the hotel on the bed and breakfast rate booked together with Adnams Gin Experience. The staff were very attentive and helpful and the dinner and breakfast were of excellent quality. The room was clean and modern but extremely small for the price the Crown are charging.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the rear of the hotel as you there is noise from outside in the morning.

This is a traditional hotel with quirky little nooks and crannies and lots of character. The rooms have been very sensitively and and tastefully modernised.
The restaurant was very good although the menu was a little limited and so it would be sensible to look elsewhere if you were staying for more than three nights or so.
Southwold itself is a quintessentially English seaside town and is a good base to stay to visit the Suffolk coast. We enjoyed it so much that we stayed an extra night

We spent last Saturday night at the hotel on the dinner, bed & breakfast rate. Parking was almost full in the small yard behind the hotel, but we secured a space. Reception was unusually on the first floor landing, but we were soon attended to. We were shown our room via one of the main small staircases in the hotel. Agatha Christie could have set a splendid novel based on the guests not quite knowing where their rooms were, as there are no direction signs giving room numbers, which adds to the old worlde charm of the Crown. Our twin room was newly decorated, and with modern furniture, comfy beds and a bath! The window looked out over the roofs of Southwold. The bar at the back of the hotel was fairly small for a pre-dinner drink, we later found another bar in the dining room. Dinner was excellent, although the (Adnams) beer cured bacon at breakfast was unusual. Southwold and the Crown and the grander Swan, as well as most of the pubs are owned by Adnams. The dining room was wood based for tables and some of the seating which suited the room. Staff were friendly and the service was prompt for a busy Saturday evening. I would recommend the Crown, and Southwold is as charming as ever.
