“Ok but expensive”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2012 via mobile

Location is excellent and the room decor and facilities were excellent also. However we were kept awake by the noise from the adjacent brewery (similar sound to a fridge). The following morning we appeared to be stalked by the cleaning staff who were obviously keen for us to vacate the room, this was before 9am and we found this extremely irritating to say the least. Breakfast was disappointing in that whilst well presented I would not call the cooked breakfast a full english and the continental breakfast consisted of croissants and cereals (no cheeses and meats etc) however service was excellent.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear that you felt intruded on by our cleaning staff, your comments will be passed on to the hotel manager. We would also be interested in understanding why you felt our Breakfast's did not live up to your ideas of what they should be. We do hope that you get in touch with us here at the hotel so we can act upon your feedback appropriately.

I booked the single Room 11 for 2 nights. It's called The Writers Room. Really lovely, and I sat in the comfy armchair by the window where you have a view of the sea. I stared for hours on end. The hotel is very 'green' and gave me £5 off my bill as I came by train. I used one of the hotels bicycles and had a ride to The Harbour where the reeds swished and swayed. Bought fresh fish off the boat. I want to go back to my view.

Room Tip: If travelling alone, Room 11.

We stayed one night for dinner, bed and breakfast in room 19 which has small sitting room and overlooks the square. It as a very traditional feel which we enjoyed. Dinner was excellent - really good choice of local produce and attentive, friendly and relaxed service. The only suggestion for improvement is a bit of a spruce up for the stairway and some of the paintwork but don't let this put you off we're looking forward to going back.

We decided on a night away very last minute, booked over the internet and set off. Reception were very friendly and upgraded us on arrival which was a super surprise! Large room [no. 22] overlooking the square and a very comfy bed. T.V. in room was quite small but then we didn't plan on sitting in our room all the time! Southwold is a lovely place to visit and the hotel is in a great location. Breakfast was lovely. When checking out we were told we could leave our car in the car park all day whilst we had a walk/shop which was very nice of them. You also get given a little card that gives you 10% off in certain shops in Southwold.

Only stayed one night, but here's my review. Hotel is well situated, right in the heart of Southwold. If you've never been to Southwold, its a lovely little town, although becoming a bit too posh with all its expensive shops etc. Luckily it still retains plenty of charm. The hotel is nice. The reception staff were very friendly and very helpful. The decor is not too bad, some parts are looking tired though. The corridor to our room and the external side of the door are looking very tired and could really do with a makeover. Inside the room, it has clearly been decorated in the last couple of years I would say and was modern and very tasteful. Really nice feel to the whole room and I'd gladly stay there again. The bathroom was adequate - but looking very dated. If it were my hotel, I'd spend some money on installing more up to date bathrooms. Didn't like the utilitarian blue floor or the cheap electric shower. They did their job. But just spoilt the feel of the room. The worst feature of the hotel was the waitresses. We had tea in the front room in the afternoon. There were 2 waiting staff. Both ignored us for about 10 minutes as they ran round like a couple of headless chickens. The room wasn't busy. When the lady eventually saw us there was a look of surprise on her face - as if we'd materialised in front of her eyes. Nope - we've been sitting in front of you for 10 mins and you're clearly just not very observant my lovely. Tea was ok - but weak Earl Grey is not my thing. Real leaf, but if you're going to put real leaf in my pot, then at least be generous and add enough. I can always water it down myself, I can't add more. I find that poor. Wasn't expensive though. Breakfast had the same staff. 4 waitresses this time. Running around like headless chickens. Took about 15 mins after being seated for someone to ask us if we'd like coffee. Then took a further 2 requests and another 15mins before the coffee arrived. Why? I'm sure the staff meant well - but they really were clueless how to work a room. In the buffet section, the milk had run out, same as the orange juice. I pointed this out to a waitress - so that they were aware. I wasn't complaining, just trying to help them. The look on her face was one of - oh not another thing. Sorry, but not good enough. Luckily, we both found it funny. We've stayed in plenty of hotels all around the world of all different standards. I'd stay here again. But they really should improve the waitress staff or their training.

Room Tip: Our room was on the side, with a fire escape going past the window and looking over some roofs. Usua...

Always thought that this was Adnams jewel in the crown. Our first visit last week and allocated room 15, The Admiral suite over looking the market place. We were not disappointed, a huge room with modern bathroom and separate shower. However the Hotel is looking sad and could do with make over. We paid £190 for B&B which i think was too much. We did eat in their restaurant which really was surprisingly good. I will wait until they have a refurb before returning.

Southwold is a traditional English seaside resort of character and charm and The Swan perfectly reflects this. It is homely and friendly and feels like it has been part of the scene for very many years. The staff are probably its greatest asset with a number who have been loyal employees for decades, they greet guests like old friends and genuinely want to please.
The restaurant is excellent and the food a genuine pleasure.
We stayed in a Lighthouse room which was light and clean. These rooms are comfortable but not overly luxurious, they are also positioned across the car park so if it is raining you get wet going to breakfast/dinner. (Umbrellas are plentiful!)
The hotel is quite expensive and some small lapses in service that we experienced should not happen when paying this much.
We enjoyed it very much and would happily return.
