“A vintage night away in Southwold”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 October 2013 via mobile

Had a great night away at the Swan. Stayed in one of their courtyard rooms with our two terriers. Service was excellent and the breakfast was fantastic. The hotel was very accommodating and had a lovely feel. The beer as you would expect was top drawer. Has to be one of those places you try at least once! Massive comfy bed and loads of hot water. Restaurant was also a treat and reviewed separately. Thanks for a great visit. Mach.

The hotel's lovely, the staff great and the food was absolutely amazing. Our room (no. 25) was huge with a massive and extremely comfy bed. The only thing that let it down was the shower - the heat was very temperamental and there was no pressure to it at all - if you turned it upside down, no water came out! Shame really, as it was quite a pricey stay!

Sorry to read that the shower was not working properly – I have got our maintenance team to look into this. Glad you loved it otherwise!

We have stayed at the Swan five times over the years and this visit will probably be our last.

The Swan should be the quintessential British hotel in a Victorian town but it needs work.

The location is perfect, the staff is on the whole very, very good but it is desperate for some TLC.

Like other reviewers we found the rooms needing some major refurbishment. The standard of room fittings are sub-standard and as well as the decor (certainly in our rooms) - the smaller things like the very cheap TV, lack of ipod connectivity and very basic bathroom fittings are not reflective of what this hotel should stand for.

We tried the dinner and breakfast package this time (for dinner you get a £70 contribution)

Dinner was perfect - great food and great service. The menu is superb and the presentation exquisite. This was the saving grace this time - thank you chef!

Breakfast this time was however, very disappointing. The food had clearly been sitting part cooked for a while and was dried out. Service was all over the place too.

We had to wait for ten minutes in the drawing room for a table to be made up and the service did not flow well at all....despite us having the same waitress for breakfast as we had for dinner!...this means that the problem must have been in the kitchen.

The bar is not great and again, late evening service is slow and limited. They run out of Bailey's which upset my wife too!

The Swan is a centre piece of Southwold and may be the jewel in the Adnams crown, but come on Adnams, - please move quickly to invest in the hotel and make sure that ALL rooms and ALL public areas are worthy of this grand old building.

I feel disloyal in being negative in this review - I love the Adnams brand and everything that they, and Southwold stand for, but this visit has tested my loyalty.

We'll be back for our annual pre-Christmas visit (the Southwold lights get switched on 7th December) but we'll be staying elsewhere this time...either The Randolph or The Blyth)

We'll wait to see how the Swan improves next year before planning our Easter and Summer visits.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the square are great - we've stayed in most of them including the suites...

I am pleased our excellent staff and dinner in the restaurant were your saving grace. A programme of refurbishment is on going and I do hope that when you come for your 6th stay your room will be up to expectation.

We recently spent a weekend in Southwold which we loved. The Swan is the best location and it is such a shame that the hotel which has the location and the space is so rundown and ramshackle. Rooms were spacious but the state of the bathrooms and the décor leaves much to be desired. I couldn't recommend on this basis unless there is a massive refurbishment and couldn't stay there again myself until then. A great pity as Southwold is a wonderful place.

I am sorry that the room and décor let down the other areas which you have rated quite highly. Investment has recently been made into the lounge and reading room and bedrooms are on a rolling programme of refurbishment which I hope you take the opportunity to sample should you choose to return.

Southwold is a very exclusive place as a the people that choose to stay here in general.
This hotel is in a good spot, back of the place and car park does not give a great first impression but no matter. The reception welcome was very good, on wondering aroundI was a bit concerned by the tired appearance of the communal areas and corridors, however the room surpassed my expectations, perfectly clean, comfortable and well equipped.
I chose to dine here, strange again really, a rather drab, grim bar area well due a refurb but a really smart, stylish yet traditional restaurant, very formal service but not stuffy, not the cheapest but excellent quality and very tasty. Most people were dressed for dinner so as I said rather formal but nice for a treat. The room price was reasonable for the location, I think if they spruced up a few of the bits and pieces they could charge a lot more, nice breakfast with good choices. I would stay
here again, thanks

A charming hotel in the middle of a wonderful town. Perfect location right in the square.
The room we stayed in has been refurbished and it was very comfortable. The view was perfect, looking out directly on to the square and the sea in the distance.
It is expensive. If you pay that sort of money I think everything should be perfect. It nearly was!
One criticism was the bathroom. The shower in particular needs to be updated.
The other is the car park! I am not sure what can be done, but it is a nightmare- small and awkward.
Food is very good and all the staff were very pleasant and polite.
I will always stay here when I visit southwold as it is a lovely hotel. With a few tweaks, it will be perfect!

Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the square. I would choose room 18 every time

This is a really nice hotel, with a great restaurant in a lovely town. However, there are some minor lapses in service that indicate to me that this lace needs a good manager. Not sufficient towels, a third bed not arranged on arrival and a slightly incorrect bill. All put right with charm and efficiency, but should not have happened in the first place.

On the other hand, I do appreciate the 10 percent discount card for the wonderful Cellar and Kitchen shop and other participating shops.

We're glad to hear you liked the hotel and restaurant and that the little lapses encountered were dealt with with charm and efficiency – however you are right and these should have been in place beforehand. Communication of messages between reception and housekeeping is usually very tight, so I apologise for the slight lapse on this occasion.
