My wife and I stayed at this hotel over the Christmas period 2010, and because she is partially disabled we especially valued the easy access and space provided in one of the garden rooms. The staff could not have done enough for us, nothing was too much trouble.
The food was very good and the kitchen went out of its way to cater for my wife's coeliac disease.
All in all very well done Adnams- and anyone staying really should try their extra strong Adnams Gin-brewed in the brewery next door.

We opted to have lunch in The Swan bar ,our order consisted of the Spicy Chicken Open sandwich, and the Rumpsteak Burger and Chips.

There were six other people in the bar at the time : four of whom
were already eating,

We waited until 1.50pm when our annoyance got the better of us, paid
for our drinks and left.

If a hotel kitchen cannot produce a relatively simple burger and chips
and open sandwich within 35 minutes of the order being placed, on a
quiet lunchtime, then it must have serious problems.

We stayed here with my husband's 90 year old Nan, having been disappointed with The Blyth last year, we were hoping for a better stay. It was on a level with The Blyth. We had two rooms in the garden and were very pleased with them - they were a good size and decorated nicely. The only issue was that, although we explained that my husband would be using a wheelchair and his Nan could not walk too far, our rooms were the furthest from the car park and the main hotel. This was not so disabled friendly.
The main hotel was tired - it could do with some TLC and also having the heating turned down - it was July so quite what it was doing on I don't know. The breakfast was nothing great - standard hotel buffet - and the staff were not very friendly or helpful. We retruned to the car park one day to find someone parked in the disabled bay without a blue badge, unpacking his car. We went into the hotel to get them to move him & they told us to just wait for him to finish!!
We would recommend the hotel because of it's location but management need to listen to it's guests concerns.

Enjoyed a comfortable and relaxing stay in one of the garden rooms which was a good size and had one of the most comfortable beds I have slept in.
The service was pleasant and the food excellent.
Just needs all the ancient art ( huge overbearing paintings of self important people from times long past glaring down on guests & a job-lot of hunting shooting and fishing scenes centuries old ) putting in a skip and replacing with more relevant and brighter pieces giving a more cheerful atmosphere to what is after all a holiday destination. Only my view of course ( and I would welcome a response from Adnams )

The hotel has an excellent location overlooking the little market square and moments from the sea. Free parking at the rear, and a good first impression as it's such an attractive building. The hotel has a lot of traditional charm and is 'old school', matched by a traditional clientele - I expected Miss Marple to appear at any time. It is a little worn and dated in places - though of course the building is very old - and our room and bathroom was just about on the right side of acceptable for this price. The service was friendly and polite at all times, better at breakfast than in the evening. The food in the evening was perfectly fine (nothing particularly stood out) and breakfast was good. Overall I enjoyed our stay, though I think that in future Adnams need to work harder in service terms and on upgrading the rooms to keep up with standards expected these days for hotels at this price.

GOOD
- service from most people willing (esp advice on phone abut how to register online for cheapest rates, housekeeping), though receptionist on arrival was very unhelpful and positively blocking in our effforts to get into the room when it was ready for us ahead of formal check in time (we got in in the end!)
- garden and table outside room
- bar service and range (that is adnams for you!)

NOT SO GOOD
- little bits need touching up with paint (would be so easy and make a real difference)
- hotel didnt repond to my comments on departure card
- breakfast food quality has gone downhill (actually hotel feels less plush and luxury than it used to...eg quality of bar and lounge upgrade is very middle of the road like a (nice) hilton or holiday express in some respects)
- quality of lighting in room
- only one person on recpetion at check out time (the other person had gone to a 'meeting')

DREADFUL
- quality of bed - could feel springs, when two twins were combined hard central ridge

we would just about recommend this hotel to others - given the loveliness of the town and dearth of other options. We wont stay in southwold again for a while!

The Hotel is situated in the market square of this lovely unspoilt seaside town. The dining room, the comfortable lounge and the general appearance is very encouraging. The food is alright but only just, the service is iffy and the management non-existant. The prices reflect many London restaurants but do not, in my view, give value for money. The room rates are high for the standard of accommodation which, again, is alright but not special. Even the bridal suite is noot above the ordinary. The whole thing could be great if someone seemed to be taking an interest in the running of the place.
