“Beautiful Location but food lets it down”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 February 2014

Stayed over Valentine's weekend. The hotel is in a beautiful location and very peaceful (providing you are towards the back of the hotel but the main road is not that busy). the wonderful log fire was so lovely as you enter the hotel and the smell of it fills the corridors - in a nice way. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful and although our room was not ready on time, we were advised on local walks. We found our way onto the 1066 walk and walked to Battle Abbey which was really nice.
The room was beautiful but the shower in the bathroom was no more than a trickle and the additional shower cubicle in the room was so loud you know other rooms could hear when you were taking a shower as we could hear others!
We ate in the restaurant in the evening and although the restaurant itself is nice the food let it down: strange tasting crab, very undercooked veg and the chocolate fondant was tasteless. Breakfast the next morning was painful as there was only one chef on and we had to wait ages. We had ordered the scrambled egg and salmon but wish we'd gone for the full breakfast as they seemed to be better. When the plates did start to come out of the kitchen, they seemed to all come out at once and it was pretty obvious that ours had been sitting there for a while. However, the waiting staff were really sweet and attentive and made up for the kitchen. Overall, the hotel is very nice, very cosy, clean and staff are great. I would definitely stay there again but would perhaps choose to eat elsewhere.

Chose to stay here as a valentines weekend treat coming down from London.
We absolutely loved every second of it. We checked in and we were a bit peckish so ordered the high tea each. The scones were freshly baked and still warm out the oven! Really delicious.

We then went for a beautiful walk through the woods - a little bit muddy so bring your wellies! But they do have spares if you forget.

We had our dinner in the orangery restaurant. I saw recently they have received a second rosette award from AA for the restaurant and I have to say it was one of the most well presented and tastiest meal I have had in a long time- highly recommend the cod for maincourse!

The bedroom was very comfortable, clean and I loved the décor.
Also must mention how helpful, professional and welcoming the staff were!

The following day we had a delicious cooked breakfast which I cannot fault. Followed by another walk in the woods before we had to reluctantly head back to the city.

We will definetly be returning and plan to book ourselves in for the Murdery Mystery evening/dinner in April.

Thank you Powdermills Hotel for making our weekend so special!

Have just returned from a one night stay at this lovely hotel. We went on a Travelzoo deal with one nights B&B and the 8 course taster menu, which was amazing, very pretty tasty plates of food. I do agree that you need to have a good appetite but they weren't huge portions and it did take us nearly 2 hours to complete. We too had coffee added to our bill when it should have been included in the meal, but the receptionist took it off without any quibbles. All the staff were very friendly. I would recommend this hotel without any doubt and if you can get it on a deal even better.

The Orangery at the Powder Mill Hotel is one of my favourite restaurants in East Sussex. It ticks all the boxes for a wonderful dining experience: beautiful location, professional, friendly service and tasty food from a reasonably priced menu to suit all tastes. Our valentines day lunch was superb and we are looking forward to a fabulous Mothers Day luncheon on March 30th.

Just returned from Powdermills hotel on a travelzoo voucher.Hotel room and staff very good, in the restaurant they did try to hurry us , we did have to say slow down.We had the tasting menu which was fantastic but you do have to have a good appetite. A minor point check your bill as they made 2 errors on our total. We hope to return.

Room Tip: Room 40 very good overlooking the lake

Well! Always try to exceed expectations, and this Hotel did....friendly staff, beautiful room with a superb view, despite the foulest weather imaginable.
The dinner was excellent, and here's a first....at breakfast ,the waiter allowed us to mix and match the items on the menu....smoked salmon, scrambled egg and bacon...you may not like it but it was like being at home, eating exactly what you fancied!
Criticisms? too minor to mention...but...a certain member of staff had had a personality bypass operation ( all the rest made up for him!),a fridge in our executive room would have completed a great stay.Definitely going back when the pension fund builds up again...and please include VAT on the room rate quotes....quite annoying actually...but overall, well done Powdermill!

Room Tip: Room 41,executive room overlooking the lake with an outside space for a G and T weather allowing,whi...

The hotel is in a rural location a short distance from Battle (not walking distance for pubs / restaurants though). There are extensive grounds and a pool which are probably great in summer. Welcome was friendly and efficient. Room was large, clean and comfortable. Bathroom was fine although the shower lacked water pressure. Breakfast was very good. We had dinner as part of our package which was also very enjoyable and the wine prices were reasonable. We would recommend it.
