“Another successful stay.”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

Thank you for another fantastic stay this weekend. Even though there was a wedding going on and a classic car convention nothing affected our stay. Our little bichon dog loves it there too so does our 10 year old daughter. The food is always amazing, every detail to perfection. All the staff are so friendly. Can't wait to go back again soon.

We enjoyed our stay. We had been travelling a lot for the previous 10 days and the wonderfully tranquil location of the hotel was just what we needed before we headed back to France. There are lovely walks and two lakes. The hotel is a curious mix of traditional and modern, so there's a choice of room style to meet most tastes. We met only one British member of staff during our stay. The senior Portuguese restaurant staff were very charming, attentive and courteous and gave the impression that they were very happy to be of service. Ditto the Czech waitress. At dinner one night one couple was extremely difficult and stroppy, but they were very well managed by the staff. Food was very pretty on the plate with goodish ingredients, but the slates for the first course were annoying as they left black marks on the cloth. I didn't like looking at a dirty tablecloth. Those slates were more suited to casual dining. They had black plates for the main course, no problem there! We were in room 27 overlooking the pool and were treated to many displays by George the peacock. He likes to perch on one of the large stone urns. He also performed for wedding guests, showing off his finery to match theirs.
We were guests at a wedding. Nice to know we weren't intrusive on other guests ( see previous review). It's a lovely location for a wedding and everyone seemed to enjoy it. It's pleasant hotel with 41 rooms in a wonderful setting and manages to have an intimate feel. Room 27 is a junior suite which is a bit bland but extremely comfortable, the bed especially so. The room has a balcony but we weren't drawn to sit on the rustic furniture, which was not in keeping with the standard of the rest if the hotel. There was a huge bathroom with a sunken bath across the far end. It was tricky to wash one's hair kneeling on the steps. I think the space would be better used by having a standard bath, two sinks and a walk-in shower. The hairdryer was fixed over the only sink which blocked use of the bathroom. This might not matter so much in an ordinary weekend but we were getting togged up for a wedding and it is a popular wedding venue. All in all it was a very comfortable and relaxing stay and the wedding in all its parts was wonderful.

Room Tip: There's a wide range of room styles, but it's important to have a good view if you are to fu...

Although the vast majority of the reviews for this beautiful country house hotel are excellent or at least very good, I also read a few which were classified as "terrible" so we were a little apprehensive at what we might find. We need not have worried. Certainly from our experience we had to wonder whether the poor reviews were of a different hotel. We found it to be clean with friendly and helpful staff. Quite why some people should find the fact that the hotel is old and the furniture to be antiquated as a disadvantage I cannot imagine. This is a country house hotel with an old and historic past. Why would you want to modernise it? Having said that the modern touches which have been introduced e.g. the restaurant, work well and are tastefully done.

There was a wedding party at the hotel during our stay and except for the increased number of cars which was not a problem to us, we would hardly have known they were there. Maybe we were lucky in that the guests were not the noisy type as some people seem to have commented on.

The food was excellent with superb breakfasts. Someone mentioned in their review that there was no fresh fruit at breakfast, only tinned grapefruit. Well, I happen to like tinned grapefruit so it was not a problem but there was also fresh figs and a large bowl of fresh fruit which admittedly was in its raw state so you had to peel your own. I cannot see any problem with that! We ate one dinner at the hotel and two dinners at nearby first class restaurants and I have to say the hotel meal won hands down.

We would definitely return and would choose an executive room to which we were given a free upgrade. We looked at a standard room which was a sweet four poster but it did smell a bit musty as it was in the oldest part of the house.

We recently stayed at the Powdermills, this was the second trip, the first was just over a year ago and was very nice. This time, however the main three course meal was average, at best. Our room (14) must have very thin stud partition walls as during the night I was kept awake by the person snoring in the next room,I would have thought walls with proper insulation would have been installed? Anyway a very nice location, friendly staff, shame about the food, much better on our first stay, can't say we would rush back.

Stayed at this hotel for a special treat to celebrate Asparagus my wifes favourite.

I had read a few reports on this hotel and the option ranged considerably.

The hotel is in a beautiful setting, and it helped that the weather was fantastic at the time of our visit.

I decided to push the boat out and go with a junior suite, which was in effect a large room with a sofa. There was no mini bar and just one small bottle of water, the TV was to small for the room and the wonderfully placed balcony had rather old and tatty chairs to sit on.

The Bath was dangerous and impossible to get into if you had any restricted movement, at the time of the visit the hand held shower was leaking, and you had to get in the bath to use it, not great, at £195 for a night I would expect better.

That said the bed was very comfortable.

The restaurant was pleasant but I take on board other customers comments by suggesting it was god waiting room, the clientele was some what aged I suppose that is the area we are in and the challenge of the hotel to get a younger more vibrant clientele.

The wine list I thought was not bad, and at good prices however I do wish when restaurants put dates of the wine in the list that they would change them when they run out of that vintage, it does make a difference.

The food was good if not in some courses excellent, the lamb was superb, my vegetarian wife said the asparagus risotto was one of the best she had tasted.

They have fallen for this trendy thing of using slates as plates, to much for me master chef has a lot to answer for.

At £45 a head I think fair value, the dinning room lacked any real atmosphere, service was good.

Just little things this report from average to very good, I suppose after spending the thick end of £400 I felt a tad over charged and if I am honest that was the room not the food.

Room Tip: We had room 27 with a nice balcony but a tad expensive I feel

The husband and I the first bank holiday weekend in May and we absolutely loved it. This hotel is an absolute gem. It's exceptionally pretty which always hellos. Also the rooms are a good size and are very comfortable. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The hotel also boast of a nature reserve which is great for long walks. We had dinner at the Orangery which was very nice. We also caught a glimpse of the famous peacock. The only drawback was the curtains don't entirely block out the sunlight in the morning..

We stayed here recently for a one night "special deal." The location is superb and we had a warm and friendly welcome from the Reception staff. The bedroom was clean & well appointed. The dinner menu was quite extensive & served in a relaxed manner. We were fortunate in having beautiful weather which enabled us to walk around the lovely grounds which added to the overall
enjoyment of our stay.
