My husband and I were lucky enough to get married at the Powdermills five years ago, and so to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary we treated ourselves to dinner, bed and breakfast at this beautiful hotel. The hotel is situated in breathtakingly beautiful grounds and the house is charming, I love the fact that we were greeted by a roaring wood fire and the owners loyal springer spaniels - who are very well behaved and sweet.
The room was luxurious with a beautiful four poster bed, highly polished antique furniture, and an enormous bathroom with a step down circle bath. We made the most of the many relaxing public rooms, to enjoy our drinks before dinner - made for us by a friendly receptionist. Dinner was delicious and very good value for money - 3 courses for under £30, mine included lobster which was wonderful.
We found our whole stay enjoyable, breakfast was delicious and the grounds were stunning in the autumn sunshine. We would come back every year if only we could!

Stayed here in August with my fiancé for a night.

The hotel was very busy with two weddings. The staff were rushed off their feet, but they responded to all our needs quickly and efficiently.

The room was a bit old, creaking floor boards, slanty walls, etc. But that is the charm of the hotel. This is a pet friendly hotel, so if you don't like dogs, then you mightn't like the smell in the halls, etc. Personally we didn't get any smells that the other reviewers spoke of.

The grounds of the hotel are great. A pond at the front, a huge lake and woods at the back and an amazing Romanesque outdoor swimming pool. This is a perfect hotel for ramblers, walkers, outdoor cyclists.

The food in the restaurant was very good and the Library room next to the bar is gorgeous.

Overall I would recommend this hotel for anyone.

Note: There is very bad phone reception which is good or bad depending on your view.

I have just read the reviews on here having just spent one night at this hotel. I can't believe people have had such bad experiences!! I absolutely loved it and want to go back again when I can spend a bit more time exploring the hotel and the gorgeous grounds. This hotel is a very old house, NOT just one of your normal characterless hotels with no personality or charm and which all look the same. Yes, the receptionist is in a little cubby hole but she was friendly and efficient. The room was gorgeous and very clean. The rest of the hotel is wonderful - lots of interesting rooms to explore and relax in with big squishy sofas and roaring fires. Wonderful.

Reception on arrival small and cramped behind the bar, with the receptionist doubling up as bar staff which considering that there were two weddings meant that there ws a q at the bar. They took the room tariff immediately - very unusual. The room was along a long musty smelling corridor as the main stairway was blocked off by one of the weddings. The room was grubby with stains on the carpet and a damp feeling. The coffee table was damaged. The standard lamp was dirty. The en suite was grubby and the shower tray was worn away. The shower head did not work properly. The towels were hard. The Gordons gin ran out and the Chablis for the table had also ran out. There were no crisps. The table for dinner was i between a corridor and the ladies toilet. There was no ambience or music in the orangery. We were served bread from a basket with between 10 and 12 loaves of which the waitress did not know all of the varieties and told us to take as many slices as we wanted. The main courses were poor with little vegetables. Coffee served despite asking for capuccino. Although there were radiators on in the corridors there was no heating in the room. There was no sound proofing in the room so we heard the television next door followed by snoring until three ' ish. This was followed by barking dogs followed by owners taking dogs for walks and banging corridor doors. The breakfast buffet was empty when we arrived. The cooked breakfast was cold and stale. The toast was cold. The coffee was again cold and bitter. The cutlery was dirty and worn. The service in the restaurant for dinner and breakfast was poor, with either inexperienced young ladies or older and grumpy ladies. The whole experince and service was poor and not value for money. We would never stay there again or recommend it to our worst enemies.

We stayed at the Powdermills for two nights for a wedding in August 2010. It really is a charming old country house with a nice little garden.

Unfortunately nothing in the house has been kept updated, so despite the lovely setting, I could not recommend it to anyone as a place to stay. The rooms are OK size, but the beds are unfomfortable and the bedding is some old blankets from the 1960s. If you need a spare bed, you are better off bringing your own - we had to go and buy some! - because the z-beds they have are from pre-WW II and really are so unfomfortable with springs missing, that our two daugters could not sleep in them. They woke up in the morning complaining that they're hurting and that they could feel the strings through the thin mattresses all night. When we asked whether the hotel had anything else they could provide to our girls, the answer was no... so off to the nearest Argos we went... And we still had to pay for the extra beds!

Other implications of the dated infra in this old house are the showers. The water temperature went in one second from freezing cold to absolutely boiling hot, without any warning. It really was dangerous and very uncomfortable. Both my husband and I burned ourselves, he worse than me, and I didn't dare to put our girls in the shower at all. Invstment into modern power-showers would fix the problem so easily.

Such a shame, as it really is externally a very charming place.

We stayed at the Powdermills after my sisters wedding, which was held in the area (thankfully not at this hotel). On arrival the hotel looks lovely and the grounds are beautiful-when you step inside it all changes.

The bedroom stank disgustingly of urine. The shower was either stone cold or burning hot. Hotel dogs run riot in the corridors. The fire alarm went off 3 times in the very early morning...

Moving onto breakfast. The tinned fruit on offer was fizzy-well past it's best. After continuous requests for tea, it finally arrived in a filthy, cracked jug. It literally looked like it hadn't been washed for months-dripping with tea stains and coffee granules stuck to it's sticky base. No milk was offered with tea and when trying to help ourselves to fruit juice there were no glasses.

Unsurprisingly, we asked to speak to someone in charge to find out what they thought about our customer experience. However, we were told "there's no one hear in charge". No apology to go with that statement, just a blank looking, unhelpful waitress.

The photos of the Powedeemills make it appear like a luxury country hotel. Even driving up to the hotel this is the impression. However, as soon as you walk in, you realise they had a blooming good photographer.

Stayed here as a stopover for a wedding and was extremely disappointed. On the plus side it is a lovely setting, and the geese by the pond didn't attack me when I went out to get some fresh air.

Unfortunately the fresh air was needed due to the wet dog smell of the room. My night's sleep was interrupted three times by the fire alarm going off for no apparent reason, the shower fluctuated between freezing cold and boiling hot, and breakfast was a complete fiasco. Dirty bowls, glasses, floor, tea pots - lack of the basics, such as milk, the toast was burnt and the staff couldn't care less or were too worn down from complaints to care.
