“Saturday in February”
Reviewed 2 February 2014

Stayed on a Saturday night to celebrate a special date and booked a superior sea view room. This 3 star hotel occupies a great position on the beach just outside Bexhill. The room cost £130 - it was comfortable but overpriced and a few things for a room at this price were wrong - plastic glasses in the bathroom, a loo that did not fully flush, a sliding patio style door that did not lock so was fitted with a safety chain, damp patch on the wall by the door and windows that have not been cleaned for a long time.
Breakfast was very good after a wait for a table, but being asked a few times for a room number was a bit frustrating.
Overall not too bad but an hotel that seems to not be focused on the little things that make a complete experience.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review, we do take these review s most seriously.

You mentioned several area's of concern and I would like to answer each of these individually,

1. Plastic glasses in the bathroom. It is a Health and Safety requirement that in the bathroom the glasses are a) plastic and b) covered in plastic coverings.

2. Flushing Loo. Each of our toilets have a dual flushing system operated by a button, the large section of the button provides a full flush and the small section of the button provides a reduced flush. As a business we strive to be as kind to the environment as we can.

3. Patio Door. The patio doors each have a leaver on the inside of the door which secures the door, this also has a key to lock the leaver. The chain provides security during the summer months when guests like to leave to door open for air circulation and the chain will restrict the width of the opening.

4. Windows. All of the windows in the hotel are cleaned a minimum of twice a week, during the winter months this is regularly increased as the position of the hotel being directly on the beach does cause a lot of problems with the salt water from the sea during adverse weather conditions being blown over the windows and doors leaving a salty residue. On a regular basis we can watch the window cleaners cleaning a window only move on to the next one and watch the one they have just cleaned return to the state it was in before they cleaned it. We are quite literally fighting a losing battle with the elements during the winter.

5. Damp. I have asked our building manager about damp problems in the Sea House and he has not been aware of any damp issues at all and he does regularly check all bedrooms for any maintenance issues as well as a comprehensive reporting system from our Housekeeping staff in which they would certainly note any signs of damp. Our building manager will be giving the Sea House rooms further inspection as this would of course be of great concern to us.

6. Breakfast. It unfortunate that breakfast was busy at the time you went along to the Restaurant and had a wait for a table, it is unfortunate that on that particular day a lot of the guests chose the same moment to take breakfast which resulted in the wait and rather busy time.

Thank you for the time you have taken to post your review, it is our policy to look after our guests and provide the most positive experience for them and we hope we have been able to re assure you on the points your have raised.

Having emphasied on the phone that I required a table for 2 by the window, on arrival the young man said there was no note of this and whilst 'faffing' about seemed to want to be booking in the people behind us rather than take us to our table - my companion was an elderly lady with a rollator (zimmer on wheels) - we were half heartedly shown into the room with the carvery - and a table in the middle of the room - my companion was upset and I requested again a table window. We were taken to the other room and a table in the corner by the window. Good. Ordered G&T and red wine - I got a white wine - changed - good. Starter we both enjoyed - carvery was not good. Coffee was OK. The whole atmosphere felt like we were a nuisance rather than respected guests. We are local people and I have to say I now agree with several friends who have visited the Cooken Beach - not again thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of the hotel. We are most sorry to learn of your disappointment with your visit.

When bookings are made for the Beachside Restaurant for a weekday meal or Sunday carvery either via the telephone or in person the system takes the date, time, name and booking notes so naturally any note such as a window table request is added to the booking as a matter of course as it forms part of the booking. It is most surprising that this detail was not found at the time you arrived.

I am most sorry that you found the reception to your arrival to be below the expected standard, it is clear that the coming staff training session is certainly required by some and we will ensure this is covered. There were several areas of error and we thank you for making us aware of this problem which will assist us in carrying out the most relevant training for our staff.

Stayed over from Christmas Eve till 27th December on the Christmas Package. Great location, fantastic room, lovely food, good entertainment and very attentive staff.
We booked a sea facing room for the two of us and we were allocated the family room for the same price. Overlooking the beach and listening to the waves. Made good use of the spa on boxing day. All the waiting staff have been well trained and knew what to do and how to look after us. Everything was as if it was 'no bother', all done without a fuss. It's not cheap but you get what you pay for and this hotel was well worth it. We will go again.

Room Tip: Pay the little extra and have the sea view.

We popped in on Monday lunchtime for a quick meal as the local pub was closed due to an electrical fault. The staff were friendly, polite and helpful. The selection and quality of beers available were great but we were not impressed with the bar meals. The best option was the fish and chips as the steak and Guinness pie was small and did not taste nice. The mixed veg were tasteless. We had to sit in Tavern part of the hotel, which seemed sad as the dining room overlooking the sea was empty.
The whole place looked empty. We will try elsewhere next time.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, we appreciate the time you have taken.

We appreciate you kind comments about the staff and beer selection.

We were most sorry to learn of your disappointment with the bar meals particularly the pie as these are made fresh daily and are extremely popular.

The Beachside Restaurant was open but the lunch bookings had cancelled due to the appalling weather on the day, there would have been no problem with you dining in the Restaurant overlooking the sea.

We have stayed here on several occasions and every time it has been excellent but this time it was even better, from the friendly and efficient check-in till we checked out three days later. We were a party of ten friends and family and I think I can speak for everyone we all had a great time.New years eve itself was a fabulous evening, the table looked beautiful and the food was excellent nothing had been forgotten right down to the piper to welcome in the New Year.
The weather was pretty rough but it didn't spoil our fun and we had a lovely walk into Hastings on the second day which was sunny. All in all a very happy and enjoyable time was had by all!

Room Tip: All the rooms we have stayed in have been good, it's nice to have a sea view and for very little...

I first came to the Cooden Beach Hotel in 1994 when my kids were young. It has a great location right on the beach facing the English Channel a couple of miles west of Bexhill-on-Sea and about 30 minutes drive feast of Eastbourne. When the tide is low and the weather's fine, it makes for a wonderful location for the family and individuals alike.

This time, I was here on December 30th. The tide was in and the weather was foul. However, the Cooden Beach is also a lovely, cosy place to visit, even in mid-winter. I arrived about 5pm. The check-in was efficient and brisk (about 90 seconds) and the receptionist was very pleasant.

My room (121) was a double, even though I booked a single, so that was a pleasant surprise. The decor is neutral so, hopefully, should be comfortable for most. The bathroom was spacious with a bath and shower which compared favourably with the genuine single I was in four weeks previously (Room 102), which is very cosy but only has a shower.

The restaurant serves dinner at £17 for two courses and £20 for three. However, I chose to eat in the less formal Cooden Tavern which is part of the hotel building. I had gammon, chips & salad plus a 250ml glass of wine. It came to just over £14 which is enough but it's a relaxing place and the quality was good. The very pleasant and helpful attitude of the waitress also enhanced the experience.

I booked the room the night before my stay and got it for £40 including breakfast. I eventually booked it for the same price through Superbreaks who offer 9% cashback through Topcashback, so my nett outlay was around £36 which I thought was outstanding value.

I ordered the full English breakfast, which was excellent and included eggs made as you want, bacon, fried potatoes, mushrooms, tomatoes and beans, as well as toast served separately in a toast rack.

I've only ever been to this hotel in the summer prior to December 2013 but this was just as enjoyable and stress free as it always has been.

I would recommend, especially if you are visiting off season and are prepared to book late to get a good deal. For those with families, and if we have another decent summer, this is as good an option as travelling abroad.

It should be mentioned that the rooms are upstairs and the hotel doesn't have a lift/elevator.

Room Tip: They have a 1st floor family room with a wonderful sea view.
