We went to the Cooden Beach Hotel last night for a meal to celebrate my birthday,8 adults and 2 children. We booked for the restaurant, which is in reality the function room, consequently the room is partly carpeted and partly laminated floor. We were sat at trestle tables, as was another large party, on the laminated area. It felt like we were in a canteen, although the tables were beautifully laid there was absolutely no atmosphere, candles on tables were pointless as the lighting was too bright.
There is a set menu of 2 courses for £18 or 3 courses for £22, but several of the main courses carry a supplementary charge of £3 or more. Several of us had steak, supplementary charge of £5. The menu stated steak, chips, cherry tomatoes and a flat mushroom and that was exactly what you got. No little bit of salad to make it look nice, not even a few peas for colour. There was nothing suitable for a small child, no kids menu was offered. A full sized fish and chips arrived, luckily my son had the same so he found that there were a lot of bones in the fish so it was totally unsuitable for a small child.
The deserts were very nice but 2 of the party wanted plain vanilla ice cream. The menu did say that there was a selection of ice cream but it took so long to arrive I think it must have required a quick trip to Sainsbury's.
The bill came to £270 including drinks and as we were all drinking soft drinks except for a couple of small beers, the coke must be damn expensive there.
All in all, we will not be paying a return visit anytime soon.
