“A great break”
Reviewed 21 August 2014 via mobile

This was our first visit to Sussex and our 5th at an Old English Inn. What a gem! We booked 3 nights using our Clubcard vouchers. As always a very simple process with nothing but very helpful, friendly staff on the reservation team.

We had upgraded to a superior room and we're not disappointed. The room was immaculately clean and superbly appointed with a king size sleigh bed and plenty of room to house our clothes and shoes. The hair dryer always proves useful so I don't have to remember to take my own. What a fantastic shower. We'll be investing in one of those at home!!!!

The staff were very friendly but the service was not consistent; although always very polite and helpful.

The breakfasts were amongst the best we have had anywhere in the world; lots of choice and the full English was always beautifully cooked. (If you leave the restaurant hungry after breakfast you only have yourself to blame.)

We love the menu choices available at the OEI as there's always something for everyone....even the fussiest of eaters. The menu choice is vast with an array of specials. The food service at The Roebuck was excellent. We dined late last night and had to wait all of 10 minutes for our starters with the main course served very soon after we had finished our starter! Hot food was piping hot and everything was nicely presented....We were very impressed.

There is a huge amount of off road parking and a very colourful 'cottage' garden to the rear. The pond wasn't the most beautiful we've ever seen as the filter/pumps were huge but the water was very clean and the fish looked in excellent condition. If you are a light sleeper and you visit in Summer, you may want to ask to be in a room away from the pond as you can hear the water running all night if your window is open. This wasn't a problem for us, but it would be a shame if it were to ruin your experience of a stay in a really lovely clean hotel.

We would definitely recommend a stay here and will definitely return. Thank you everyone for making our stay so pleasant. :-)

Spent another couple of nights here. This may be classed as 3 stars but to us is 5. Everything is just right, from the moment we enter to when we leave. The rooms are comfortable and I think they may have regrouted the bathrooms and cleaned them up. Lovely cosy lounge area with big leather sofas. Fire going in Autumn/Winter. We ate in the bar area. Food is excellent and a good choice with mid week specials and set menus. Breakfast is equally lovely. Buffet of fresh fruit, cereals and pastries. Cooked variety of English breakfast cooked to your liking, toast, tea and coffee. We felt really spoilt here. Thanks to Nic and his wonderful staff for making these two days away special. Special thanks to Dave and Elena.

Room Tip: Rooms at back have great views. We prefer 1st or 2nd floor

We chose this hotel because it was on route to elsewhere. It was expensive to begin with but at £95.00 but then we found that breakfast was extra, What a rip off for what you eventually got.
Anyway we arrived at approx. 9.00pm on a very wet Saturday night to be told by a unmannered barmaid that food was finished and we could not even get a sandwich. We settled for a couple of beers and peanuts The later bar man was good and friendly.
The place is tired and run down, our room 208 had no handle to thee door, it had been broken off and a drawer handle installed so at least the door could be closed when leaving.
The windows have secondary glazing , fine, but the primary windows don't close. This was the storm of the 9th August , water poured off the roof (obviously as the drains were blocked / or some other problem) in a stream which kept us awake most of the night. This place needs some serious maintenance.
Unless you are desperate give it a miss, we didn't know any better.

In general the Roebuck has a nice look and feel about it with a nice atmosphere in the dining and lounge area. The staff are polite albeit over-stretched and scurrying about; the food is of good quality.

The rooms are very clean and have nice decor but could use some updating. The bathroom was spotless. What is really distressing is the fact that the room walls are so thin, basic normal-level conversations can be heard form the room next door. Some effort has been made to sound proof noise from outside (with some success) but this aspect will have you with a poor nights sleep if the neighbours are watching tv, talking, arguing etc.

What's more is that the mattress quality is very poor. The bed is creaky and not at all comfortable.

Other than that it is a suitable overnight stay but not too suitable for long term visits. If you like the closeness to the park and national trust then fine, but bring a good pair of earplugs!

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing away from the main road.

The Roebuck Hotel is a very pleasant place to stay in East Sussex with many places of interest to visit near by. The rooms are comfortable and the staff very friendly and helpful. The menu is varied, with many 'old favourites', and the breakfast is excellent.

We enjoyed a two night stay in this lovely, cosy, and above all FRIENDLY, hotel to attend a family wedding. To put it simply, it could not have been better. The staff were friendly, but not familiar, efficient, but not pushy. Public areas felt like a home from home - comfortable and not overwhelming. Old fashioned country style decor - leather sofas, woodpanelling etc. Bit shabby in places but not enough to detract from the charm of the place. The breakfasts and bar meals were good and wholesome, the wedding breakfast was served with style. Everything went off smoothly and I can find nothing to fault!

Room Tip: Hotel is on the A22 but we didn't experience any traffic noise in our room (302). Might be a go...

Had a lovely Sunday lunch with family & friends, the carvery was very nice & fresh with 3 meats to choose from. The staff seemed friendly enough, we arrived before lunch so sat & had a drink on the terrace. Fairly reasonable.

Room Tip: Didn't stay, only visited for Sunday lunch.
