Visited the Middle House last night for a pre-booked meal. The majority of the party had turkey which looked very dry, I had fish which was very nice but the vegetables served were suitable for meat dishes but not for fish. Eating fish with brussel sprouts ,swede, red cabbage and roast potatoes is a very strange combination. I know I was in the minority eating fish but suitable veg could have been served on the plate. The food was not cheap and it was spoilt by unsuitable accompaniments. When the food was served the staff completely disappeared so if you had needed anything unlucky and as we were crammed in like sardines very little you could do.

I had been to the Middle House twice before and had no complaints previously. However lunch today, despite varied and delicious food, was not a success. The curious system of ordering at the bar when you are a table of 10 and ordering restaurant-type food from a large menu rather than bar snacks, doesn't work if the specials boards are elsewhere and staff who are then trying to bring food to the table (which had no visible table number so identifying where one was sitting wasn't easy), are also trying to take drinks orders at the bar in a large extremely crowded pub. Female staff were rushed off their feet but still managed to remain polite, efficient and pleasant but the barman was abrupt to the point of actual rudeness. A simple and polite question about the food elicited an impatient and patronising reply followed by a bad- tempered response when I tried to tell him which table I was ordering for. This place is not cheap and one does expect a modicum of courtesy, so it's a pity when the bad manners of one member of staff ruins one's enjoyment of the occasion when the rest of the staff were perfectly pleasant. I am giving 2 stars to reflect that service wasn't ALL bad and the food was, admittedly, excellent but it didn't make up for being treated with what I can only describe as contempt.

I have just had an excellent meal in this traditional English Pub. It is a bit of a step up from normal pub food but not too fancy, Beer was excellent. Service was great and the ambiance was great. Would recommend to anyone.

We have eaten at the Middle House lots of times over the years. It is consistently good. There is always lots of choice and vegetarians are catered for with an interesting and varied menu. The staff are always delightful and most have been there for a long time which is always a good sign. It is the best pub ever in our opinion - don't ever change!

We booked as a party of five for Sunday lunch. Booking is advisable, they only had the first 12.15pm sitting available. There was a lively family atmosphere including generally well behaved children. A wide choice of meals were on offer and the young staff were kept fully occupied shuttling between the kitchen and tables.

Food quality was good, my beef excellent. Only comment was that the table could have been cleared more quickly after we all finished and that the dessert course could have arrived quicker. All in all though, a very satisfactory Sunday dining experience. I should mention the Harvey's bitter, always pleased to see that on the tap.

Room Tip: Make table reservation in plenty of time.

Went here for lunch on a rainy Sunday. Great atmosphere, really busy but the food & service are amazing. My husband & I had roast pork & chicken, respectively, big portions of meat, yorkshire pudding & stuffing. The Middle House also serves the BEST vegetables. Roast potatoes, broccoli, carrots & cheesy potatoes all cooked to perfection.

Go early if you want to get a table, sit by the log fire and enjoy a local ale if it's cold outside, or enjoy the great views from the garden when the sun is out.

I have been to The Middle House a number of times and, so far, it has not disappointed. The staff are friendly and efficient, and the food is plentiful and tasty. I had a chorizo and bean stew, which was great. I would return
