We are not an overly fussy couple, nor ones who like complaining, but complain we did when we discovered our room – room 11 – was not en suite as booked. We were not told this upon booking in, but left to discover it for ourselves. As they were fully booked a room change was not possible, and we were offered a miserly sum as compensation that we refused to accept. With the promise that they may be able to arrange accommodation elsewhere the next day, and it being late, we had no choice but to stay the night.
The room itself is described well in another review which must be read, but we would add that the duvet itself was burnt, the window sills and curtains were filthy, the mattress was so worn out that the springs actually hurt to lie on, the wardrobe was so narrow it was totally unsuitable for a couple, and negotiating ten steep and unlit stairs in the night for the bathroom was downright dangerous. We insisted this was fixed straight away. The bathroom is across a passageway that leads to other rooms and seemed adequate except it had only one ring for hanging two towels. After a very uncomfortable night made worse by banging doors we descended to breakfast.
The hotel itself is really like an open plan inn. Reception is behind the bar, and meals are provided in the lounge area which is an extension of the bar area. The whole downstairs has a stale odour and is in much need of decorating and freshening up. Breakfast is served on bare tables. It was adequate, but we both left the lukewarm sausages.
Outside, two or three signs declare that all rooms are en suite, yet all four staff purported that they had done nothing wrong. They laid the blame with the agency that had sold us the room as they had advertised it incorrectly! However the agency that took the booking made it clear the contract was between the customer and the hotel as the hotel group is paid directly. This is a trap anyone booking through an agency – perhaps a late bookings agency - should bear in mind. No alternative accommodation could be arranged, and with much annoyance we were stuck for our second night.
I shall never know if it was legal liability that worried them or the threat of yet another slating review on this and other websites, but that evening, and without asking, we were given a 50% refund in cash for which we were relieved and grateful.
They ruined our short break, and we would certainly not recommend this hotel to anybody. A break we were so much looking forward to resulted in much disappointment, anger, aching limbs and tiredness.

We only stayed one night (thankfully!). The whole place needs to be closed down and cleaned. The shower in the bathroom was full of mould, carpets dirty, window sill hasn't been cleaned for years, I could go on. Don't waste your money on a stay here, only positive comment is the cooked breakfast was good.

the wall paper was falling off apart from tape holding it on but you dont notice this much as the cobwebs everywhere take your mind of this, we was in room 11 and as stated all rooms are on suite so this is good providing you dont mind walking down the corridore to get to it, it wasnt much of a problem as we would not have showered there anyway as the mould in the shower took up more room than i would, the mirror in the bathroom is fine providing you dont want to use it as half of it is missing, the hair dryer was fantastic lots of power and hot air only problem was the flex on it was broken so fine if you spilt water on the floor as this is where you had to be to use it , lovley if you like pidgeons as they keep you awake as the nests are outside your window not that you could see it as the nets were filthy, one other thing to note if your staying in room 11 take a torch as the stairs to get down to your room are so steep a light might be helpfull, 1 major thing to note is dont pay online cause you wont stay there , just need to mention food was fine and staff were nice

Have repeatably visited The Bay hotel for lunch and dinner and have found every time the welcome warm and food extremely good value for money, we tend to use it if when visiting eastbourne its on route and you know the food will always be freshly cooked and plenty of it..

The heating didn't work, which was a shame as we could have taken the caravan and been more comfortable. The shower was filthy, he fan in next doors bathroom sounded like a tractor running through, the bathroom heater continually cut out and the hairdryer hose was disconnected from the base unit.
Plus in the middle of the carpet was a white bleached stain, the beds were rickety and moved, and bacon at breakfast tasted very fishy (or off?).

We met family who were staying at the hotel for a well deserved Easter break and thought their complaints were over exaggerated, until we were invited to see for ourselves! If the Bay Hotel was a submarine we would gladly give the order "dive, dive, dive" but leave all the hatches open! Everything we witnessed in this establishment was grubby, tired and reflected the indifference of the present management team, who we believe were "pair 24" in the last two and a half years. The chain who own this hotel should seriously think of closing it down for a season and invest in a complete refurb. We recommend you stay at nearby Napier House where you are certain to have a perfect holiday and receive a warm, homely welcome.
