“Very comfortable stay”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

Needed somewhere comfortable to stay for a wedding. Premier Inn was full, so tried this and very pleased that we did. Good sized comfortable room, convenient (though bland) location, adequate breakfast. Recommended.

The location is convenient, being on the A120, but not beautiful. Inside, the hotel is fitted out to a standard higher than you would expect of a Holiday Inn Express. Our room was a good size and, again, much better than I would have expected from the brand. The (free) breakfast was good. The staff were good.

Stopped for one night prior to an early business meeting in Braintree. Was worried when I saw how close it is located to the main A120 bypass around town, but I shouldn't have been - I couldn't hear a thing and slept like a log. The room was a comfortable temperature and no need to open the window or fiddle with temperature controls.
My room was spotlessly clean and well thought out, the bed was really comfy and there was a great size en suite shower room. A good size desk with plenty of plugs for all my work stuff and excellent, fast, free wifi throughout the hotel so I could get a few hours work done without any problems.
The staff couldn't have been more helpful or friendly - I even managed to get some printing done at reception by the night staff. Brilliant, and on the whole, much better than the Premier Inn at Freeport Village where I stayed last time (for twice the price!)

I would have given 5* on this basis, but the food really is dreadful!

It is such a shame as it really lets the place down. I ate dinner there as I arrived late and couldn't be bothered to set off in search of anything else and immediately regretted it. The fish and chips I had was the most inspiring thing on the menu and tasted dreadful. Considering the quality of the food, it is also expensive. Breakfast was only acceptable because I wasn't interested in the cooked option - it did look pitiful and not surprising it is 'free' I certainly wouldn't have paid extra for it. However, the self service toast and a cup of tea was acceptable to me.

Please sort the food out HIE, as you are really letting yourselves down!

My tip if you want to eat decent pub fayre is the Fowler's Farm Vintage Inn further down the A120 towards Colchester - its a predictable chain pub, but there's a real fire and much more atmosphere and a large menu and wine list. Otherwise, plenty of options at Freeport Retail Village including TGI's, Pizza Express, etc.

We booked in here for a last minute night away, breaking up our trip to the coast in Clacton on the Saturday.
Check in staff were really friendly and made our experience very enjoyable. (Sue Putt especially).
She checked us in, served out drinks whilst waiting for a cab and couldn't have been more acomodating.

Would definitely return should we ever find ourselves needing to stay in the Braintree area. Room was very clean and comfortable.

In a sterile location off a main road - nothing within walking distance - but plenty nearby - towns and Freeport Village. Lots of parking close to hotel. Room spotless. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Breakfast poor - small choice, inedible scrambled eggs, wafer thin bread for toast, tasteless coffee from machine, chewy grapefruit etc etc. Much better options if breakfast matters to you.

Dear satisco,

Thank you for your review in relation to your recent stay with us here at the Holiday Inn Express Braintree.

We are obviously disappointed to see that you did not thoroughly enjoy your time with us here and must apologise for this.

We believe our location to be of great benefit to our guests with its close proximity to Freeport, numerous wedding venues and Stansted airport.

You will be pleased to hear that we are currently working on improving our "Free" breakfast offering at the hotel and have received some lovely comments in the past few days from our guests. Our "free breakfast" is inclusive of a great continental selection with three additional hot items in sausages, scrambled eggs and beans.

We must apologise once again that we did not meet your expectations on this occasion and we look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the near future where we hope to show you how we have improved.

We booked this for a single night as I had an evening meeting in the area.

The hotel is new and has excellent facilities with very warm and welcoming staff. However, its location in the centre of a series of road intersections means that there's nowhere that you would want to go within walking distance.

If you're prepared for that, then, as I've said in my title for this post, it's an excellent, good value stopover.

The only downside for me, was the sausages that were provided for breakfast. They were obviously the cheapest the hotel could get and as such were inedible (a small point for managers to address?).

Overall though, I'd be happy to go back.

We were looking for somewhere to sleep having been to a party and the HIX was just minutes away so we booked it.

THE POSITIVES.
The staff were friendly
The bedroom was very adequate
The room was air conditioned
The bed was comfortable
The car park was large with plenty of spaces
The price

THE NEGATIVES
There was no where you could really relax – no snug corners with sofas where you feel you could relax and enjoy a drink.
The corridor really smelt of cigarettes, it was very obvious that some guests were smoking in their rooms and it had drifted out into the corridor.
We were woken up in the early hours by someone, who it sounded like was rebuilding the hotel. Things being dragged around and then dropped for ages.
Shower had one dispense missing altogether – luckily we had our own shampoo but it can’t have been checked as it obviously had three dispensers and one was missing altogether.
Breakfast!

For somewhere to lay you head and for that price, it was very adequate. We were rather put-off by the numerous signs ‘advertising’ your ‘Free’ breakfast. Where else do you stay in the UK where breakfast is not included?

So, to breakfast … We found a table and sat down. The table adjacent to ours had just been vacated and a member of staff was quickly there wiping the table down – which was good to see. What horrified us was that there was a fair amount of scrambled egg on the table, instead of collecting this on her cloth, she purposely swiped it off the table and onto the floor. Not impressed and it was obvious she was not the one responsible for cleaning the carpet later.

Breakfast is not a memorable experience. I don’t know how much practice one needs to convert scrambles egg into a rubber substitute, but this chef was obviously a Jedi Master. The sausage was, quite honestly, inedible and I suspect was no more related to a pig that I am. My advice would be to stick to the cereals for breakfast.

It’s a shame that the food was so incredibly poor as with a little more effort, and sourcing better ingredients, the breakfast would have been so much better and created a lasting impression that would have been positive as we checked-out. Despite this, for somewhere to sleep, it was very adequate.

To the manager.
Staff training regards cleaning tables …. and not simply onto the floor
Attention to sourcing good ingredients and its subsequent appropriate cooking and the HIE would really provide a much better experience.
Some more sofa’s, coffee tables, plants and relaxed seating areas would make it far more welcoming and may persuade guests to sit, relax, and have a few drinks in the evening. As it was, we walked straight through to our room: had it been more inviting we would probably had a night cap.
