We have been eating at La Bicicletta for nine years, several times a year usually, and it is our favourite Italian restaurant outside Italy. We never need to look at the menu at La Bicicletta because Alberto, the owner and chef, invariably offers us his special dishes of the day. We have never been disappointed and usually bring friends or family with us in order to share the experience. We look forward to returning soon.

We were really looking forward to going to this restaurant having looked on their website and seen it had been run by the same person for some 20 years and proclaiming to be “one of the finest Italian restaurants in Essex”. Unfortunately we could not have been more disappointed and will never go there again. Someone really needs to introduce the chef to fresh herbs, decent cheeses and heaven forbid a bulb of garlic. We should have seen the signs when served up with some supermarket like bread before our starters.
Opting to go with 2 of the specials for our starters we had the asparagus and stuffed mushrooms. The asparagus seemed to be no more than plainly griddled and sprinkled with dust. There was no butter, sauce or maybe ham to accompany; and what can only be described as dust as it had no taste at all, I was told was parmesan cheese. The stuffed mushrooms were utterly nondescript and had no discernable flavour other than the mushrooms themselves.
For our mains we went for spicy sausage pasta and ravioli. The spicy sausage pasta didn’t even contain enough sausage to fill a teaspoon, and as such if there was any spice to it then it could not be tasted. When asked how our meal was and I said a little flavourless our waiter clearly took offence and told me it was fresh pasta (surely a minimum in any Italian restaurant). He took it away saying the chef will address my complaint. I expected him to come back with a little more sausage given that it was spicy sausage pasta lacking spicy sausage, but clearly all he had done was sprinkle a bit of chilli powder into an otherwise bland sauce. The pitiful portion of ravioli also had a most uninspiring sauce and whatever it was filled with again lacked any taste.
Somehow we were persuaded to order a side salad each with our pasta dishes (not an obvious match) and what arrived at a cost of £5 would have been outshone by a 99p mixed salad bag from any supermarket – once again tasteless.
There was a large group on the table next to us also complaining to the waiter then the chef about something and they all left before their mains were served.
We are big fans of Italian cuisine generally because of the bold flavours and the use of fresh herbs as well as a little garlic. However I have no doubt we would have experienced more authentic Italian food had we stayed home and got a pizza delivered!
Not being able to handle any further disappointment we opted to skip dessert. In addition to the 10% service charge that was added to our bill they also had the cheek to add £1.20 per person “cover charge” to what was already an expensive menu and one which in no way is representative of the tasteless meals they serve up.
I only hope that the cover charge is being used to cover the cost of putting the chef on an Italian cookery course. Never again will I eat in this restaurant.
