“Such a let down !”

My friends and I went to this restaurant for Christmas Day lunch and encountered a lot of the problems experienced by the last two reviewers. We had been forewarned that we would probably be seated in a marquee but were assured it would be heated. Our table was in a corner right up against the sides of the marquee where a heater was placed.On reaching our table the heater was blasting out so much hot air that no-one wanted to sit on that side. We had a word with the manager and he turned it down for a while which then left us feeling very cold – consequently the entire meal was spoilt by one or the other of us keep having to turn this heater on and off.

I understand that temporary staff are brought in for these occasions but it seemed that they hadn’t had a lot of training – soup was served without spoons and the bread was served later. Main course arrived without roast potatoes which were served later so our meals were getting cold (having not been piping hot in the first place). Some of us who had the turkey did not get any stuffing so we had to ask for this. My friend found two pieces of string in her meal, told the waitress who just said sorry. She was offered another meal but by that time my friend has been put off! I would have thought this complaint would have definitely warranted an apology from management but that was not forthcoming.

Service was very slow and we had to wait a long time between courses. Dessert was served without spoons and these were then put in a heap at the end of the table. The serving of tea and coffee was also a shambles as teapots came first, then cups, then teaspoons followed by saucers. Milk had to be requested too.

I would like to say though, the waitresses did try their best but It was very obvious that they were overburdened with waiting on so many tables between them, getting quite flustered at times. The hotel have definitely overstretched themselves in creating more tables outside the original restaurant which has always had such good reviews.

Finally, where were our Christmas crackers?

“very poor”

We also went for our Xmas lunch, there were 8 of us booked for 3.30 and at 4.15 we were still in the bar with no update or reassurance from the staff, yes the place was busy but that does not detract from customer service. We were seated in the main restaurant: there was no trace of any festive decoration not even table crackers - it lacked any atmosphere.

All meals had to be pre ordered, so the kitchen should have been able to cope. The food was not worth the money spent. The beef was 2 slices of sirloin sliced on a machine I would suggest, as it was all to uniform, and weighed about 3oz at most, I did ask if I could have another slice, as we were one of the last tables to be served, but was told NO by the waitress.

The cheese was straight out of the fridge, cold with no flavour, you could tell both the starters and cheese had been pre-plated and stored in the fridge, as the plates were so cold.

We had to ask for our jug of water 3 times, before one of our table went to the bar and got it.

we also had to ask for our port & Brandy, and when we asked for our mince pies, the waitress was running around trying to find the bags to put them in.

With 2/3 sittings, I think the Management went for Quantity over Quality.

They even charged us a 10% service charge because we were more than six people, but to make matters worse, this included our bar bill, for drinks bill that we got ourselves whilst waiting in the bar for an hour.

We will not be rushing back, this was not our first visit to the Restaurant, but if anybody asks me how it was, I can only give my opinion of the Christmas Lunch.

“Shocking”

We arrived for Xmas dinner in the restaurant booked for 3.15
Still not seated by 4.15 and we were not informed of situation re what time we would be seated.
Told table was ready @ 4.15 and was shown into marquee only to find the table was not ready and staff ignored us and left us there at a table that was only set for 12 and there was 15 of us and it wasn't even set properly. then another table were asked to move theirs mid meal so that another table could be fitted to ours - it was so embarrassing. When i complained to the owner he told me to shush And when my husband complained he was told to 'keep it down'
Absolutely Disgusting service
Had to ask for a soup spoon only given knives and forks. Had to ask for crackers with the cheeseboard had to ask for wine glasses for wine and water glasses for water.
We were not offered cranberry sauce or horseradish sauce or mustard and there were no Christmas crackers on the table. We also did not get our mince pies to take away as stated in the menu.
Seated in a marquee which was either freezing cold or uncomfortably hot
Whilst the owner gave us a generous discount off the bill, this did not compensate for the fact that Christmas dinner was ruined and made the day extremely unpleasant for our party
We eat out every Christmas, two of our party had eaten in this place a few week earlier and had excellent service and food but this was the worst Christmas dinner we have ever had !

“Don't believe the hype”

We have been trying to book a table here for a few months. The desire was born from some very hearty recommendations. Unfortunately, when we did manage to make a booking ( I think this is down to a very small dinning room) I could not have been more disappointed.

A small and featureless dinning room, a menu lacking imagination or creativity, food to the standard I would expect in any gastro pub, and a long wait between course.

A poor meal, no. A fantastic meal that lived up to the billing it received, no.
Just an average meal.

“Seems to have lost the edge...”

Possibly a year since our last visit for Sunday lunch and recollections were very good. However, this time around it was disappointing - although our order was swiftly taken, we waited more than half an hour for our meal (surely, a roast dinner is not the same as a dish 'cooked to order') and when it arrived the serving was far from generous. What was more of a let down was the varying temperatures of the ingredients on the plate... some piping hot, others tepid. The dessert we chose was supposed to be a crepe...this was a thick rubbery pancake - unpleasant. The ambience is good - the food is not.
