I'm a light sleeper but found the triple-glazed windows excluded traffic noise well. Everything else has been said: cheerful considerate hosts, convenient location, good food, big rooms, old-fashioned decor but with all necessities, even an effective trouser press.

Stayed 1 night with a friend revisiting Chelmsford, both of us had not been back for over 20 years. Chose the Boswell as it was very handy to walk into the city. Asked for a quiet room which we got. Very large room with a double and 2 singles just for the 2 of us. Very clean, basic room, could do with updating. Very friendly couple how run the hotel, gave us lots of books and articles on Chelmsford dating from 1900 to present day. Lovely cooked breakfast in the morning with plenty of real coffee refills. Would go back again just a little pricey at £95 think it should have been about £75

Room Tip: Second floor towards the back of the hotel seems to be the quieter.Nothing was too much trouble for...

Great accomodation ideally located for Chelmsford centre, including cricket ground, and a great base for exploring the Essex countryside.
Excellent friendly hosts, great home cooked breakfasts, comfortable rooms
Definitely stay again when in Essex

Stayed here for 2 nights. Proprietors are very friendly and helpful. Had room 3 on the ground floor, facing the parking area. The room was very basic and sparse, but spacious. Very basic bed with older mattress; not much to look at, but I slept well. This hotel is not much to write home about, but does what it says on the tin. Did not try breakfast or the common areas. Hotel is a 10-15 minute walk from the train station, 5 minutes from the High Street and 10 minutes from the Essex Records Office.

It might sound a bit soppy, but I am working in Kent and travelling over the Dartford Crossing to stay at The Boswell again. the journey is around 35 miles each way, and is worth the inconvenience to me for the following reasons;
I know where everything is
I eat in
I like the breakfasts
I like the excitement of being housed in different rooms
I use the free WiFi for business catch up
I meet old friends there for dinner and a drink as there is ample parking and it's easy to find.
The whole cost of travel and accommodation is cheaper than anything in Kent.

In fact I'm very comfortable there.

Room Tip: All are good as the hotel is off the road. The cheaper rooms are on the ground floor and I've ne...

We stayed here for 1night and were very pleased with our choice. the room was very comfortable with plenty of tea and coffee, more than we could take advantage of. breakfast was very tasty with a good choice and plenty of it. The owners were very friendly and helpful. It was much nicer than staying in an anonymous chain, and is very convenient to the town centre. it also has parking places which is a big plus.

Comfy rooms, including a (shared) sitting room. Excellent choice for breakfast, owners will also provide dinner if requested. The Owners are very friendly and interested in your reason for staying, and make you feel welcome. The location is a 10 minute walk from the Essex Record Office.
