“Exactly what you would expect”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 October 2013

Somebody once said that all disappointment is due to unrealistic expectation. So when you book a £50 a night B&B in Clacton-on-Sea, having had plenty of opportunity to see exactly what it is like in advance via the many pictures on booking.com and the rest, I think you should know exactly what to expect.

The building and the decor are dated and tired (exactly what we expected) the carpets stuck to the soles of the shoes a bit, and the bedroom was pokey and sparsely equipped with mis-matched furniture, exactly what we expected. The en-suite shower room was tiny beyond belief, and there was a curious smell in the corridors. Exactly what we expected.

We didn't book The Dorchester, we booked a £50 B&B in Clacton, so we weren't disappointed. It was really quite nice. The staff were helpful, making sure we had somewhere to park the car even though the hotel's car park was full. The bar was quaint in a 1970s Watney's Red Barrel kind of way, and we got chatting to the proprietor and the other guests in the manner that is only possible in a British seaside B&B. And the breakfast was really good, served by chirpy staff in a nice clean breakfast room.

The sea front is a two minute stroll round the corner, as are lots of cheap & cheerful pubs and restaurants.

It wasn't the best hotel we have ever stayed in, because it's a £50 B&B in Clacton. My advice would be; look at the pictures, look at the price, stay at The Langtry, and enjoy the fact that you've got a cheap night's kip and enough change in your pocket for a nice Chinese at Charlie Changs round the corner.

Ideal b&b for a quick get away! If your down to earth and friendly you'll enjoy your stay. If your stuck up and expect too much you'll agree with the bad reviews!
Breakfast: lush!
Accommodation: basic but clean
Staff: lovely
Would stay again!

Stayed in room 10 in august 2013 thankfully booked for just one night. the room was very unclean, and comparing it the plush bar fitted downstairs. the rooms upstairs were more than disappointing! Had the worst night sleep ever on a old, cheap and very lumpy mattress. never used the shower as it needed a good clean. After receiving my breakfast the following morning to my horror found green mould on my toast!! Anybody finding this bed and breakfast even remotely acceptable must live in very shabby dwellings.no disrespect intended....

Without doubt the worst hotel we have stayed in. This hotel needs a complete makeover. Dusty old mismatched carpets upstairs.
The room was small, the en suite was probably a converted cupboard. You could not use the hand basin with the door closed as there was no space to move. The toilet roll holder was broken.
The Perspex light panel in the centre of the ceiling rattled from the wind all night.
On the plus side the receptionist was friendly, the breakfast was good and the bedding was clean.

We arrived at 12 and kept ringing the bell... there was no reply half an hour later, we went to the Italian restaurant next door and asked the chef if he new what time we could check in as we wenrnt 100% sure, he didn't know but said 'you don't know what you have let yourselfs in for' we went upstairs of the hotel and asked the cleaners our time of checkin and they said 2.. We found somewhere to have lunch which was lovely by the pier... We returned to the hotel at 2 and the gentlemen at reception was lovely he gave us a wifi code and and explained the bar and breakfast area... Eventually we went up to our room, it was tiny, smelly, dusty, noisy... As we were about to go out for dinner and get out of there ASAP! We realised the window didn't shut and people were walking past.. So we went to reception and said we refuse to leave our stuff in that room as anyone could get in! He gave us
keys to a different room which was alot bigger but it was still smelly, dusty, dirty and the showers and taps in both rooms had so much lime scale they stunk! Being a cleaner myself I know it can cause legionnaires disease! We called the receptionist up straight away and pointed all this out, he was very apologetic and agreed the whole hotel needs referbing but admitted the owner will be putting the hotel up for sale, he's obviously lazy and lost complete interest in the whole hotel, I'm currently writing this on my way home, we booked the hotel for 1 night to break up the traveling time so it was so long for my partner but we rather travel home, than stay there. We can't talk to the owner until tomorrow as he wasn't there! we will be asking for a full refund! Me and my partner feel sick as we still have the taste, smell in our mouths from the whole DISCUSTING experience! (Ruined a good week for us! (Also WIFI didn't work!)

Just been reading some of the bad comments, well just returned from staying bank holiday, yes the bathrom is tiny but it meets the needs. The bed was comfortable rooms could do with a refurb but ok. The staff were very helpful and friendly, breakfast brilliant and the bar drinks very reasonable. This is not a 3 or 4 star hotel it is a seaside B & B at a reasonable price and location couldnt be closer to all amenities. Parking: we parked outside hotel 1st night then went out for the day to colchester zoo Brilliant, when we got back had to park in the car park opposite hotel at no charge, but must say you are staying in hotel. We would/will be back again.

Room Tip: rooms 9 10 11 12 quiet rooms

First the negatives, the room was very small, the bathroom tiny, had to leave door open whilst using hand basin. The wardrobe rickety and the drawers hadn't been cleaned. Hotel is next to bar and nightclub. Hot night so left window open slightly - on the Friday night the noise continuous, mainly unruly leaving the club in batches from midnight to 4am when the seagulls tookover! Not much sleep.

However, the bed itself had clean linen and was comfortable .The towels were also clean although ageing. All the people met were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast simple, cereal or yoghourt and full English but well cooked and staff again very friendly. Bar and lounge area ok - reasonable prices, again friendly. Parking limited but can arrange free overnight parking opposite so no real problem.

Well situated just off seafront and pier - so walking distance most attractions.
The adjacent Italian restaurant (different ownership I think) is a bit pricey but truly excellent cooking - second vist and main reason we booked the Langtry.

Finally price - for situation and month (August) the shortcoming are recognised in the low price.

So for a cheap place to stay next to a great restaurant it is ok - but bring some earphones if you want to sleep with window open and accept room limitaions. Bit of a shame as for pleasant people's sake would like to be more positive.

Finally - when we got home we had a call to advise my wife had left her I-Pod behind - so add honest to friendly people (arranged for my son who lives nearby to collect).

Room Tip: At back adjacent to restaurant on ground floor? Not a front, top floor next to nightclub!
