There aren't many places to stay in Hornchurch, and the number 1 was fully booked. First impression: they spent some money and time to decorate it to a decent, if basic standard. Second impression: smell of damp. Good nights sleep: well we went to bed while the party was still going on downstairs, but were then awakened at 5AM by loud music which (allegedly) was not coming from the pub but from across the street. Staff were nice and breakfast bar decent, but I would have preferred some sleep and non-smelly room. I suppose 'could do better' would be a fair assessment.

We have now stayed here twice, before & after the Christmas incident. Don’t be put off by the old reviews, we have found the rooms to be comfortable (had 3 rooms on this occasion as we stayed with family members). All 3 rooms were clean, spacious and well maintained; the continental breakfast was adequate where you can eat as much or as little as you want. We stayed in room 101, on one of the hottest weekends of the year so had to have the windows open, overlooking the station, the train noise did not bother us, but being directly above the smoker’s shelter the cigarette smoke was annoying (not a problem when windows closed). The cleaning staff were great as my wife mentioned that it was hot overnight & a fan would be nice, on returning after a day out we found an electric fan had been provided, which was a nice touch. The location is great if you want to travel into London for the day, very regular underground service. Will be staying again, when we visit family.

Room Tip: Room 101 is above the smokers shelter & nearest to the Station.

I was concerned by the old reviews but was pleasantly surprised to find the room small but well furnished and clean. The continental breakfast was good, apart from the terribly slow toaster and loss of the filter coffee machine after two days. The lady in charge of the breakfast, Kim, was apologetic about the toaster and coffee machine but helpful with all requests to refill or replenish the juices and cereals. This inn is an Ember Inns pub 100yds from the Hornchurch railway station with a regular service on the District underground line from Upminster to London. This regular service is great for travellers but not for sleepers in the inn. The mainline fast trains pass through the station regularly too, not stopping but making even more noise than the underground trains. The windows are of wired glass but not double glazed and offer little sound insulation. Apart from the noise from the smokers in the smokers hut and the air con unit below our room, 103, and the trains our stay was much better than expected.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms on railway side of inn, especially 103 which is above the smokers hut and air conditioni...

I will be honest I was apprehensive about staying here with my prior knowledge of the Christmas incident. However I was well and truly surprised when the stay was over.

We stayed In room 102 which was quite tight but enjoyable none the less.. Lovely comfy clean bed with nice covers (which were nice and white - where previously they were a sickly wine colour) TV worked and all amenities you would need.

The only issue we had was with the shower in the bathroom.. It wasn't easy to get the right temperature on the shower and took us a little getting used to.

It was cleaned everyday. And the maid was a lovely woman -

We went for the continental breakfast each morning and had a great selection of foods, juices, teas coffees and the waitress was always nice and pleasant everyone seemed to like it

We used the hotel as a base to visit family In upminster and station cabs always ran well from the railway.

The noise at night was also fine in room 102 - I can't complain and we were there on the may bank holiday when it seemed to be rammed

All in all a great trip and if we are looking for a base again its the place we will stay

Booked via Innkeepers lodge few weeks before travel. Just needed a base for visiting family for four adults and only paid £70.00 per couple for the 2 nights in their winter saver. We stayed 26th Jan 2013 and had rooms 106 and 107 which were both sizeable and clean. the rooms were very wam and maybe the heating should have been turned down a touch. There was traffic noise but we slept ok regardless. After booking we heard about the xmas day food problem but we didnt let this put us off from still using the hotel. We found the bar/ lounge very busy on both nights but got a table ok for a few drinks. We had a meal too and it was nicely presented and tasty (no we weren't ill either). The continental breakfast was ample and set us up for the morning. There was plenty of parking spaces so no worries there. We found the bar staff and housekeeping staff very friendly too. I would go here again and I would try other Innkeepers Lodges around the country too.

I booked this hotel direct for a Saturday night stay on the 12th January and hadn't read any reviews before booking. I took their "Winter Special" offer which gives a discount of around 40% off the usual rate.
Subsequently having seen the publicity regarding the Xmas meal incident, I had a look at Tripadvisor.
Yes it is a large pub with a function room and Sky TV and it was fairly lively...the bar is open until midnight and the disco in the function room (I think it was a Saturday birthday bash) was thumping away until midnight.
Not ideal for some I agree but having been pre-warned by other reviewers, I didn't expect to be tucked up in bed by 9 pm.
I found the staff to be very pleasant and helpful. My room (a double) was spacious and warm and the bed was very comfortable so that when I turned the light out at midnight, I went straight to sleep. The room and bathroom were very clean and all the usual bits and pieces were included.
The only thing that wasn't working was the hot tap in the basin but the bath and shower were absolutely fine. I mentioned the hot tap to the Manager in the morning and he thanked me for pointing this out and said he would get it rectified.
The breakfast was "Continental" as advertised. There were a variety of cereals, yoghurts, bread for toast and the usual spreads. In addition there were chocolate and plain croissants plus plenty of different fruits. Also there was a pot of hot coffee and I saw others with tea.
The pub has a large car park so no worries in that direction.
This is not a part of the world I had visited previously and I probably won't be back there anytime soon. Would I stay here again as a solo traveller? Yes without a doubt.
