The Bell Inn Hotel
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 17 December 2013

Have just paid a second visit to The a Bell and once again myself and group of friends had a very enjoyable evening.
We were accomodated I believe in the Bonson Suite which was ideal for the numbers in our party.
The menu choice was excellent and two of the people with us were "veggies" and they were looked after with items not on the daily menu.
Although in a suite of our own the service was good with the young waiting staff being most attentive.
If I have one criticism is that the food could have been hotter. I appreciate that the food has to come from the kitchen downstairs and along the corridor but perhaps they would be better served by having the plates covered to alleviate this problem.
Overall though an enjoyable experience.

The room (Du Barry suite) had the wow! factor, bathroom needs an update and a shelf but both very clean. The food and service were excellent. All the staff we met were polite, especially the young women with a sparkly bow on the back of her bun, who was there gone 12 the night before and still had a smile the next morning at breakfast. (Sorry failed to get your name)
Not sure if the Essex breakfast is worth £9.25 though.
On the whole a great time had by all.

We wanted to shop at Lakeside and rather than stay at a Premier inn or Travelodge we decided to treat ourselves to what sounded more relaxing. The people were lovely, friendly and welcoming and we got off to a good start. Room 9 in the car park was very convenient for access but our first impressions of the room were not good. According to the website the room was 'recently refurbished' but the carpet near the bathroom was stained and the shower area was in need of a good clean. The bathroom waste bin was full to the top with the previous occupants' rubbish and the cups had tea stains. On the second morning the cups were still tea stained so presumably never taken away for a proper wash. We went in with dripping wet coats but there was nowhere to hang them not even in the bathroom and the tiny wardrobe only had 4 fixed hangers so they could not be used. The bed was 2 singles pushed together and very comfortable and clean but no headboard and they were too big for the room hence only space left for the tiny wardrobe and, surprisingly, a large desk and one office chair! The first night we did sleep well but the second night the rooms either side were occupied and we were woken by first one, then the other, opening doors, putting on lights, using the bathroom and in the morning when we hoped for a lie-in at 7am the TV in the adjacent room, which only a few inches from our heads, was put on so no more sleep possible. We mentioned this when we paid our bill and the lady said sorry but there was no suggestion of a reduction in price. The included continental breakfasts were very basic and disappointing, apart from the lovely fruit salad, and the mugs gave nowhere to put a spoon. Now to the good part! The restaurant meals sounded rather complicated so we opted for the bar. The food and service were excellent. The menu was quite limited, about 5 items, and only one of these changed the second night but we were happy with the choice. I think we might have given The Bell 5 stars for the food but really only 1 for the room. A lot of work is going on there developing extra rooms which may be better and the confusion over where to go for breakfast might be resolved to save walking up and down the road. The people were all so nice that I am sorry we can't give a better rating.

Room Tip: Not room 9!

Last weekend we travelled south from Northumberland to Horndon-on-the-Hill Essex to attend a relatives 90th birthday party.
Room booked here and an easy trip down the A1/A14/M11 - nice and easy until 200 litres cooking oil spilled on the M11 delayed things by shutting the motorway! 6 hours travelling 9 miles and a very late arrival at the hotel, missing our meal booking by several hours. We phoned ahead to detail the problem and when we arrived the hotel had sorted food (this was past 11pm!) and taking pity on us and upgraded our booking - wonderful!
The Bell / Hill House - great character and lots of history - a great weekend!

Just back from a night at The Bell, staying in the Anne Boleyn Suite. The accommodation is large clean and elegant and the bed large and very comfortable. Staff are courteous and competent and the restaurant deserves its Gastropub of the year tag.

Recommended if you want to celebrate an anniversary or just have a romantic stay.

Btw, the full English breakfast rates as the best we have had anywhere. Cooked perfectly to our specification which finest ingredients and served with a smile.

We'll done to the management, chef and staff. Thank you

Ahhhh The Bell. I love this pub. It's in the village where I grew up and everytime I go back to visit the food is always the best. I love the whole atmosphere of the place and brings back lots of memories. Can't wait to go there again and see what they have on the menu. Scrummy.

Went there with a friend and was given a table in the upstairs restaurant (didnt know it existed despite being there a number of times before).
Very busy tonight but all service was conducted professionally and with care and consideration.
Started with Rillette of Duck which was delicious and beautifull ypresented.
Main course was Roast chump of Lamb beautifully cooked and presented. For desert I had a Chilled rice pudding with an almostt creme brulee topping with plum compote and cherry oice cream.
As usual a lovely dining experience unhurried despite the food being served veryy soon after we ordered, no pressure on us to leave after we paid. It is not chea but the quality justifies the cost
