“80th Birthday at the Bell Inn”
Reviewed 17 July 2014

We were advised that the Bell Inn was one of the best pubs for food in Essex - we have been twice - the first time to see if was good enough for our friend who was going to be 80 - it was as good as we had heard., We booked for the 80th Birthday and we all had a wonderful time.
Food was excellent and the wine very good and at good prices. The service was great.
We have told other friends and they went there yesterday - they were also very pleased.
We will go again soon. We did not stay in the hotel because we only live about 30 mins away.

Situated in a picturesque little country village. Oldy worldy pub/hotel with masses of hanging baskets and pub garden. An oasis within a surrounding built up area. Excellent accommodating staff. Great for dog owners. There is a field to run your dog at the back of the hotel owned by hotel. We were allowed to take our well behaved dog into the breakfast room. The hotel boasted a third year Best Pub Grub award and it was certainly good food and not necessarily usual pub fare. Rooms very clean and modern. Well worth a visit.

Room Tip: Some rooms ground level. We were at the back near the field and no noise.

My Husband and I have visited The Bell many times over the past thirty years but had never stayed in any of the rooms before, so decided to give it a try over the Feast and Fayre weekend.
We had the 'Anne Boleyn' room which was clean and tidy, if a little tired.

However, the point to note on this review, is the fact that The Bell is an old inn, so although we expected some noise, creaking floors, bar noise, etc, what we got was far more than we'd bargained for.

Let me just add, the walls are wafer thin, so when a large party arrived in the adjoining room at around 12am, we were privvy to their cackling, singing, shouting and partying (to include a rendition of 'Knees Up Mother Brown'), that continued unabated until gone 5am. In addition to that, the adjoining door (which we hadn't checked) was unlocked and they tried on two occasions to gain entry to our room, believing it to be a short cut to the bar. Needless to say, our sleep was very disturbed so we decided to go home and checked out at 7am, telling the Receptionist why. She apologised and said the Manager would be in touch.
All I asked, (despite our evening being ruined), was assurances that the adjoining door would be checked and locked for future guests, but despite that - and a follow up email, no one has bothered to contact me or indeed respond to my email, which I believe speaks volumes..
If you stay in this rooml: ensure the adjoining door is locked, before going to bed/ or out! Oh, and take an industrial set of earplugs, just in case the party from Hell re-visit.

We choose the rooms in hill house part off the hotel as they looked more contempary. Spacious room and great bathroom. Dinner was excellent. The key success to this place is its staff who are attentive and friendly. There is an understated luxury here with great prices.

I have been to this place as a single man, a couple and now married man with family. From 2002 to now the place has not only maintained its charm, friendly atmosphere and quality but improved. It is simply the best pub/dining night in Thurrock. Go and enjoy..

Room Tip: There is no fitness centre or swimming pool...

My husband and I spent 3 nights here in May when visiting the area for a wedding - very glad indeed that we had more than just a single night here, as both the hotel and restaurant are fantastic.

We stayed in the Captain's Cabin, which is a fantastic quirky little room with a double cabin bunk bed, in a building set a few yards away from the main inn - we had the pick of the rooms when we booked months ago, and the fun factor of this room won me over. The hotel website isn't wrong when it says that the room is "For our more athletic guests" - the ladder steps up to the bed are naturally quite steep and could be entertaining after a few glasses of wine! We managed absolutely fine though and slept like a log on the comfy bed. The room is described as small and cosy, but the space is utilised well and there was plenty of wardrobe space, a comfy sofa and drawers for your stuff. Bathroom is small with a tiny sink, but has what you need for a comfortable stay. The price for the room is an absolute bargain too; parking right outside the room was another bonus.

We also ate dinner twice at the Bell Inn restaurant, and on both occasions the food was absolutely superb. To describe it as a "gastropub" would do The Bell a disservice - it really was refined, delicious fine dining - beautifully presented, innovative and tasty dishes, but at a very reasonable price. The restaurant was busy on both the Friday and Sunday nights and all of the food going out looked amazing. My husband proclaimed his beef and mustard wonton starter to be one of the best starters that he'd ever had (and we have eaten some very good food in our time!). My top tip is that if you have no room for a dessert, then order the plate of petit fours - an absolute bargain and as good as any dessert!

Special mention for the hotel and restaurant staff - very friendly indeed and extremely helpful (suggesting places to visit in the area etc). I understand that the place has been in the family for years - it already had a good reputation 20+ years ago when my father used to stay/eat there whilst on business - and you can tell that they are very proud of their establishment. The friendly personable owner also showed us several of the newly renovated rooms in Hill House before we left - they all looked absolutely amazing, and I would have been delighted if I had booked any of these too. High School in particular was huge and had a very striking modern design. We'd love to return not only to the Captain's Cabin but also to try all of the other rooms in Hill House, as they deliberately all have a different character.

I think from speaking to the owner that the hotel attracts mainly business clientele (easy access to London etc), but in my view it would also be suitable for a romantic mini-break. The village itself is very pretty.

I can't recommend this place highly enough and we would certainly look for an excuse to return!

Room Tip: The recently renovated rooms in Hill House look amazing, although I have a soft spot for the quirky...

We stayed at High House, which we understand is a recent acquisition for The Bell. Our room, High Tide, was chic and comfortable, with tasteful soft furnishings and the bed dressed with high quality linens. The en suite was huge, with stand alone bath and walk-in shower. High House is listed and it shows - you can't go wrong with somewhere like this. Residents' lounge was understated and stylish. We had a family dinner at The Bell - it was a Saturday night and packed with diners. Food and staff both good, especially Sean at dinner (who managed a complicated food and wine order without seemingly writing anything down) and the cheerful, smiley lady who served us breakfast. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend High House/The Bell and the quality of our room made our stay all the more enjoyable. Top marks in good taste for whoever chose the decor.
