This guest house is in a great location if you want to be close to the sea away from the neon lights and buzzing arcades of Southend, though within a 15-20 minutes walking distance to them. We were warmly welcomed and shown to our room which was the sea-facing ground floor room, which at first appeared lovely. It was spacious, had all the basics (tv was a bit old and remote didn't work) and seemed a comfortable place to land. The bed linen was very clean and fresh which is always important, and the bed was very comfortable. The view was nice - there is a main road in front which is not very busy or noisy, and beyond that, a splendid view of the sea.
The carpet was nice and thick with a 'walking on clouds' feel. Basically, we were very happy to have found this place. Until we took a closer look. Or rather, until grizzly things jumped out at us. Cigarette ash on the window ledge was a pretty grim discovery. And the bathroom was plain filthy! Shower was just about clean enough to go into, and the toilet and sink were fine, but the walls!!!! Yuck!!! Eugh!!! What looked like excrement and sick was splattered on the walls and there were dust ladened cobwebs hanging from the ceiling.
This is such a shame as it really let the place down. Cleaning the walls and even giving them a small lick of paint would have made this place a perfectly comfortable experience. With dirt of this kind however, one begins to doubt the general cleanliness of everything else... what lurks in that carpet pile? how hygienic is the kitchen? for example. It really was disgusting, and made you feel like wearing overalls and gloves.
Breakfast was good. There was a choice of cereal and cooked English breakfast was provided. The coffee was hilarious! It was lousy but the funny thing was that instant coffee had been poured into cafetieres with plungers that would ordinarily press down ground coffee. We'd never come across this before and did feel that it would be better to simply be honest and put sachets of instant coffee on the table instead. But there we are...
To management: Please, please, please clean the rooms of this hotel. A good deep clean would make all the difference. As it is at the moment - we would never set foot in this guesthouse again! Well, not without forensic suits.
