I moved to this area from London in September 2011.My eldest son came with 6 of his friends, and we went for a stroll from Chalkwell Beach on to Old Leigh via the cinder path. The winter sun was just setting and the photos ,that were taken by my guests ,of the sunset were magical. We finished the evening off with a pint at The Smack Inn and watched the sun finally set over Two Tree Island.... Better than the Riviera, then a Fish and Chip supper was had by all....Beautiful.They could not believe that they were only 40 minutes away from the hustle and bustle of old London Town.!!

Chalkwell beach is clean and tidy and my kids love it, the promenade behind is Pedestrianised, this makes it very safe for kids. The estuary is tidal, when the tide is in it is perfect for swimming as it is not very deep and very warm for the UK. The sunsets are magnificent and Old Leigh is around a mile stroll along the old cinder path, if you fancy a pint and some seafood. I always get the train to Chalkwell, then walk to Leigh station and return from there. There are a number of kiosks and cafes along the front that sell food, drinks and ices. Although for a proper meal, I would reccomend the arches at Westcliff. There are also two sets of public toilets on Chalkwell beach, both are in fantastic condition. Lifeguards are on duty in summer.

About a quarter of a mile from Chalkwell Rail Station along the beach prom is Menzies Cafe which is just b4 the new council loos - a bonus that.
Prices are slightly above average and service can be slow as each coffee is made using an individual sachet which dribbles water to make a good, strong cuppa. The downside is even on a slow day it takes a while for the two staff to cope.
Cleanish and a handful of good seats with limited food on offer.
Great position at a delightful area.

Located right by Chalkwell Station this beach is only 40mins from Fenchurch St, ideal for those who fancy a bit of sunbathing out of the city. The beach is pebble rather than sand, but still nice to get out by the seaside. But check the tides on Southend Councils website before you travel - the tide on this stretch of Thames goes out about two miles and unless you like looking at mud for several hours that is what you get at various times of day. Mind you little kids seem to like playing in the mud, so might make a distraction if you do have to wait for the tide to come in. During the summer there are normally shops along the foreshore open where you can get ice creams and beach toys.
