Review of City Beach

City Beach
Reviewed 4 October 2013

We live in Southend on Sea & this is a nice part of the seafront promenade area. There is ample deck chair hire, public toilets & kiosks selling the usual refreshments etc. and of course the water fountains for endless hours of fun for all kids of all ages to run in & out of!

The beach is well kept & tidy though it is a shame there is a lot of vegetation growing through the shingle as opposed to just sand and stones. The beach does have a lot of stones. As with a lot of seaside towns there a lot of day trippers and coach party visitors as another contributor has mentioned but this can only be good for our local tourism industry & the local traders.

For a traditional seaside town there were more ethnic minorities there than India, Brixton and Jamaica put together. For one I am not comfortable with this. The weather was good, had an hour there and left. Disappointed.

A long clean and rather unexciting beach. Mostly small pebbles and broken shells, but there are strips of sand to play in. It's not an attractive location - there the industrial parts of Sheppey, and tanker ships going to London in the sea view, and the lacking in charm shops of Southend front as the rear view. The promenade has free toilets, ice cream and doughnut shops, and a fountain display which the kids love. There are also a couple of places with play equipment and sand. It works, and is well kept, and it is a pleasant enough experience when you are there. But it's not something to recommend by itself.

Southend works as a package. Individual parts may be weak, but the whole is more than the sum of the parts. And there's few bits that are actually bad.

One of the 8 beaches in Southend between Shoeburyness and Leigh-on-Sea. We have been to them all as we are from Southend.

City beach is one of the main two beaches along Southend seafront and therefore one of the busiest. Three shells beach is the other main one next to Adventure Island. It is not my personal favourite but the improvements Southend Council have made to the area are good and have certainly modernised the place and added some nice features. The fountains are nice and the seafront looks cleaner. Not keen on the "shared space" thing though.

Lots of arcades and cafes, there is also a Sealife centre, Adventure Island and crazy golf, bowling in the Kursaal etc. The beach is nice and quite sandy with a few stones. Deckchairs for hire. Plenty of toilets by the Water fountains close to beach.

Parking can be hard on this part of the beach. Sealife Centre car park is the nearest, but avoid busy weekends and holidays or get there before 10:00am in order to get a parking space.

Great if you like lots to do, if you prefer quieter beaches, then head towards Westcliff and Chawkwell or the other end of Thorpe Bay and Shoebury.

Southend-on-Sea is the ideal destination for a day trip. It has a really good shopping centre, plenty of places to eat, the train ride to end of the pier, the beach, Adventure Island, amusement arcades and a nice walk along the promenade to Thorpe Bay. The council has received vast amounts of funding to improve this area, which looks clean and spacious. The lovely pavement fountains attract children of all ages but are really a bit too close to the road; maybe Southend Council will take measures to screen them off on the road side before an accident occurs.
