“Dinner Party”
Reviewed 27 October 2012

My partner and I attended a dinner party with eight others recently at the very nice Holiday Inn Restaurant. The private dining room was a very nice location overlooking the airport.
It has a balcony overlooking the airport that you may go out onto.
The staff were excellent and very helpful but!!!!
The food for some of us was very poor. I had the scallops that were perfectly cooked on sliced chorizo sausage, there was a little grit with one of my scallops which one can understand a bit but I thought that the sausage overpowered the delicate scallops a bit and the sauce was a bit insipid.
I ordered a medium rib eye steak and this was served raw on the inside and had to send it back along with another two steaks and one of these was a "well done". Our servers were very apologetic and took them away. They were replaced and came back well cooked but the char-grilling left a very bitter taste on the outside and they were served so quickly they had not rested and were a bit tough, that may be why the servers gave us steak knives this time round.
The sauce that was served separate from the steak was the consistency of milk.
My partner had fish and chips which was superb but they did not bring the gherkin that was ordered. Another of the party ordered chicken and when she cut into it there was bright red blood spots inside and could not eat it, she was offered another meal but by this time she had had enough as her starter was very poor as well. Some of the other meals were ok and the wine was very good. My creme brulee was very poor, the custard was runny and not firm like it should be and just too sweet. Another of the party ordered the ice cream trio and was served just vanilla, when she mentioned this she was brought another flavour but no chocolate.
We had a very good evening despite this in lovely surroundings and the staff done there best and were excellent, just let down by the kitchen. Lets hope that it is just teething troubles.
The steaks and other items were removed from the bill. Such a shame as this could have been a regular venue for a private party.

Thank you for your feedback, I will pass on all of your comments with regards to the staffs service delivery and food quality. I am sorry for the shortcommings that you experienced. We are indeed still finding our feet, in our new surroundings and will inevitably have some teething issues. I hope you give us another try in the future.

Stayed at hotel Sat 20/10 as had a wedding near by. Price for room very good which I booked on the website 3 weeks before arrival. On arrival at the hotel we was warmly greeted by Hayley who was super efficient and friendly. The hotel still smelt new and the room was fantastic. All the mod cons incl flat screen tv, tea/coffee maker and modern bathroom. Bed was very comfortable. Breakfast had a huge choice which was self service but was frequently replenished and hot. Would stay here again without a seconds thought.

Stayed for one night while working in area. Good car park facilities, there is a barrier system in place but opened as drove up to them. Fast check in. Big exec room on fourth floor. You can still smell paint its so new. Comfy Bed. Everything in room including a fridge which was welcome. AC but no opening windows. Good work space but could use anglepoise work lamp on the desk. Bar is on fifth floor overlooking Southend air port. Good staff and service but all new so teething problems with tills etc but these will soon be sorted I expect. Good view over airport if you like that sort of view. Bar food OK but limited menu. Restaurant v busy, looked like a function on loads of people in there. Business requests dealt with efficiently. Breakfast was usual HI fare but OK. Staff v friendly. Checkout efficient and quick. No noise problems even though v close to airport

Room Tip: Go for exec room overlooking airport

Thank you for your kind comments. I am delighted you enjoyed your stay and the views. The restaurant has indeed been busy since opening night and we are just a few short weeks in with a coulple of new staff just joined too - hence the comment on tills.

we look forward to you visiting again.

We had a lovely meal in the restaurant for our anniversary, we treated ourselves to 3 courses. The food was delicious and extremely well cooked and they were lovely sized portions. The waitress we had was very friendly, efficient, observant and very chatty. The price is slightly more because of the quality of food but well worth it. Fantastic value as we also received a 25% discount as an opening offer.
we can't comment on the hotel as we didn't stay there and only used the restaurant.

Thank you for your kind comments regarding the cleanliness, bedroom, great food and service. The views from the hotel overlooking the airport are just fantastic and I’m pleased you enjoyed them without being disturbed by the noise, as we have soundproofing. Our car park is currently free at the moment and will likely be for another week or to which confused me slightly about the cost of parking comment. When our pricing is live in a week or 2 we believe we are reasonably priced compared to other airports and airport hotels.

Hope to see you again soon.

Steve

My wife and I had the bar menu lunch in the "1935" bar, we opted for burgers. The meat was so cold the cheese didn`t melt and the bun was still half frozen despite having been toasted. The whole lot came to £27.80 including a pint of beer and an apple juice. We complained and received a reduction of £6.90. It was still a rather expensive at £20.70. The view from the bar over the airport is very good. We noticed, on our way out, that there is another bar "Laker" on the ground floor facing the car park. It had a more varied and appetising menu than the bar upstairs. Perhaps a re-think is needed. Maybe they are suffering from teething troubles having only been open for 10 days, but cannot reccommend it as it is at the moment
