We were heading down to Southend for a quiet weekend away and as most of the hotels had gone we booked this. We probably should have been suspicious when you could upgrade to an executive room (with sea view) for £2. On arrival the card payment machine had no paper in and in the end we got so tired of the woman trying to work it out that we took it off her and fixed it ourselves and ran the receipt off. All a little bit 'Faulty Towers'.

The room was very dated and paint was peeling in places. Certainly nothing like the pictures we'd seen on laterooms. Moreover the 'king' bed was smaller than mine at home which is just a standard double. We queried that we had the correct room straight away but were told someone would get back to us. By the time they did we had walked into the middle of town but were told we could change room if we returned straight away. Its an option we would have taken if we'd been in the area but didnt want to let a poor room dominate the stay.

Having said the above the breakfast was great and the free parking was a real perk. It could be a really nice hotel but just needs some TLC.

This was my second stay at the Camelia Hotel and as before the room was very clean and comfortable, with a delightful sitting area. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. I had a great meal in the dining room, and then an after-dinner drink in the bar where I met some other guests who were also very impressed with the hotel. I can recommend staying at the Camelia.

We stayed at the Camelia Hotel as it was nearby to the wedding venue we were attending that night.

The car park to the rear of the hotel was very spacious and we had no issues getting parked.

We had a sea view room at the top of the hotel, great views and no issues with noise whatsoever. The rooms were clean and very comfortable (especially the bed) and we both enjoyed a very good night's sleep.

I have only a few minor niggles, which I must make clear didn't spoil our stay, and I would like to pass on as constructive critisism:

1) no full length mirror - a must for any lady getting ready for a night out!
2) although there is a dressing table, there is no plug socket for using a hair dryer whilst sitting down. There was a lamp on the table, but it was wired directly to the socket which made it unusable for anything else
3) there is no window in the bathroom, which is not an issue, but the lighting is very 'yellow' and dull and I feel could be improved

We were greeted by a very friendly lady for breakfast, who brought over both tea and coffee (both piping hot and refreshing). She asked us how many fried eggs we would like and when they arrive we helped ourselves to the rest of the buffet cooked breakfast. Not a huge choice - sausages, beans, bacon and tomatoes...but all very nice! Again, I would like to suggest to the owner to also offer mushrooms and/or hash browns - this would complete the breakfast in my opinion.

Toast was also offered on a couple of occasions and although I can tell the staff were very busy, they were all very polite, friendly and accomodating.

We would recommend this hotel and its staff and would not hesitate staying here again should we be in the area.

Room Tip: Our top floor sea view room was lovely and quiet.

This hotel was great value for money. My visit was for business reasons within the area but stayed the night with my partner. On arrival the receptionist was very helpful and friendly and offered recommendations of places to eat if we did not want to use the hotel restaurant. Our room had a sea view and was spacious and clean. The bathroom was also clean with great towels the only disappointment was the shower was not very powerful (but that is just me being fussy). We decided to have our evening meal at the hotel as we could not seem to find anywhere else on the sea front. Our meal was fantastic and excellent value for money. The breakfast was self service with ample choice and was also excellent. Southend sea front was spotless and the main area was about a 10 min walk away and is a southern version of Blackpool with a row of arcades and chips shops and a small fair. There was also a shopping area but did not go around the area. I would recommend this hotel as it has ample of free parking spaces it is in a good location staff are friendly and helpful and overall I would say it deserves a 4 star rating.

Room Tip: You wont be disappointed to have your meals here

Stayed for two nights over the Queens Jubilee weekend and had a very good stay. The room was a sea view and just the right size but my sister-in law had the smaller room next door which was a bit small. Our room was a bit dated in the bathroom withb a coloured suiet and requires a bit of refurbishment. Spent most of the time in the town so did not matter about the room. However, we did have a table and seats in the room and it was nice to have a rest looking over the shore and watch life go by.
Breakfasts were okay and set you up for the day with the staff keeping you supplied coffee, tea and toast with the other foods being self service.
Would I stay again, probably.

Room Tip: Sea view would be better and quieter than the rear.
