“A Little Hidden Gem”
Reviewed 2 April 2014

Hidden outside London but within very easy reach, the hotel is not only spotlessly clean but also boasts some of the best hospitality I have had as a business traveller.

The staff have a welcome that is not only sincere but also leaves you with a feel good factor.I have stayed here on a number of occasions and plan to come back in the summer as a tourist. Good people ,clean rooms and very reasonably priced.

You wont be disappointed .

After reading the lovely reviews of the Ilfracombe House Hotel, I decided that it seemed the perfect place to stay before an important meeting the next morning.

I'll start with the positive: the staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was quite good.

But in case others are considering this hotel as I did, thinking it a quiet place to stay, I felt the need to write this review. Please be aware that the hotel lacks soundproofing. In fact, it was without a doubt the noisiest I've ever stayed in! You can hear all sounds and even quiet conversation in the hallways, also coming from rooms around and below. I was unable to take a nap after my long train journey, and also unable to sleep at a reasonable hour, as people were carrying on conversations until about 1am. Of course, some wake at 5 am, so my morning started earlier than I expected. So much for arriving fresh and alert for that important meeting of mine.

I wouldn't return, as nice as the staff and the breakfast are.

Stayed 2 nights at the beginning of the month. The curtains in 18 are falling down and the cleaner forgot to clean, bed cup etc after my first night. I did get a free drink without a row but not the point. The small single downstairs gets the noise of everyone who gets up early (workers and flight crew maybe) so I was awake from just after 5-00am. If you are large (thankfully I'm not) the basin will prevent you using the loo. Nice people who run the hotel and the evening food was good but 4 star it is not. Good area to sit in the evening and does have Sky if that is important to you

Room Tip: Serves a purpose if you get a good rate (I didn't) and avoid the single on the ground floor. Par...

i dont write many reviews but feel the need to let people know of this very popular gem. On arrival the check in was welcoming and quite quick. The room was more than ample in size and very very clean. Many other guest houses could learn from the ilfracombe. The menu was very good and prices are cheap. The meal we had was lovely and the chef surpassed our needs. Breakfast is an all you like buffet breakfast bar with many side plates available. Yoghurts, toast, cereal , juice and full english fayre. So to sum up, friendly chatty staff, comfy beds in rooms that are big enough / very clean and the food is great. Plus its very close to the seafront and cliff pavillions.

Room Tip: room 16 was great for my wife and i. At the rear and no noise at all.

Nice old building and was greeted very warmly at reception. After filling in our registration form I was given our room key for room 3. Parking is restricted and we managed to park in the road although it is a busy residential area and there are a lot of double yellow lines.

The carpet on the stairs reminded me of the 70's and my first impression of the room was the size (good) and then the decor - dated. The room colour was magnolia with green curtains that had seen better days covering a large bay window and then another side window.

The bed was comfortable and you had two plump pillows. There was a hairdryer which was positioned next to the TV which was in front of a mirror? Not an ideal location. I liked the dressing table area but no immediate power for straighteners but wasn't a problem as they have a long lead. There was a wardrobe housing an iron and board. There was also a mini fridge (not sure why though as was empty). Tea and coffee tray and one pack of biscuits. Two plump chairs as well so it was quite a large room (mind you anything is bigger than our bedroom at home!)

Wifi was ok, not what you are used to at home though. Sky sports was a plus for my husband.

The bathroom was a shade of dark peach which is very dated. Toilet flush was quiet. The shower was ok and needs descaling on the head as you could only use it on one setting. Soap and shower gels/shampoo were provided and the towels are for skinny people!

Slept well apart from people talking outside in the street around 2am and then was woken up by the room upstairs walking around. The floorboards are quite creaky but then it is an old building. We couldn't open a window and the room was a bit hot and stuffy.

Breakfast selection was cereal and then a buffet serving beans, tomatoes, scrambled egg, hash browns, bacon and sausages. You had a toaster on your table. There was a bowl of grapefruit as well. Tea/coffee, Orange and apple juice were available.

Would I stay here again? If I needed a hotel in the area I probably would stay here although I think the room rate was slightly overpriced at £76, £65 would be about right.

We were based at the hotel in one of the apartments for 18 weeks, the staff were friendly and more than happy to help if we needed anything. The rooms were immaculately clean and their eye for detail was second to none. the breakfast is in an all you can eat buffet format but if there is anything you wanted that was not on the buffet the staff would be happy to prepare it for you.

I would definitely recommend this hotel in the future

This is a traditional small seaside hotel, some reviewers refer to it being four star, It is rated a four star "Guest House" It is clearly not a four star Hotel. It's a little tired here and there but perfectly warm and comfortable, the staff very friendly. Good English breakfast served from a hot buffet. Good location 10-15 min walk to the centre and good value, would stay here again
