Just came back from a walk along the Prom at Southend. Popped into Marriots. November 11th, the sun was shining and warm so we sat outside and ordered a large cod and chips. We had a 15 minute wait for our food to arrive. The reason was obvious. Everything was Fresh and cooked to order. Huge fish, lovely batter and chip shop chips the way they used to be.
Sure it was a little more expensive but how many times have you paid the going rate and been disappointed. The staff were really friendly, the place packed and you can see the reason why. Would go to Southend just for the fish and chips alone

I had takeaway cod and chips last Thursday night and walked along Southend prom savouring them before ascending to the Cliffs Pavilion to see Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Band.

The cod was thick and flaky, and the chips just right.

I don't get some of the reviews on here: the food was great, and the guy who served me at their takeaway window was friendly enough.

And at £7 for large cod and small chips as well as a "free" can of Pepsi it was good value and the start of a great evening.

Marriott's "No1 full English" is the traditional deep fried version with a half tomato (fried) the only nod towards healthy eating. But who goes for a fried breakfast expecting any different? Service was friendly and yes, the owner does stand outside smoking much of the time but overall this delivered all we expected - an average English seaside breakfast

I would advise anyone to steer clear of this place, the staff are incredibly rude, what appears to be the manager cannot refrain from smoking outside where many people are eating. I ordered the roast, the whole dinner just tasted bland, more than likely microwaved and the roast potatoes were 100% deep fat fried. Cannot understand how this resturant is still open. There are so many nicer, cleaner places to eat in Southend.

i am really surprised to read negative reviews of this restaurant. We were greeted warmly, our order was taken and brought to our table, freshly cooked, extremely efficiently. The food was delicious - beautifully thin batter coating some succulent haddock. I asked for 'haddock without chips' and was offered a freshly made mixed salad, lovely and crisp with a very good variety of salad vegetables. Mr Marriott was concerned that we were enjoying our meal; and said that if there was anything not to our liking, we should tell him straight away!

We will most definitely be back again!!

On reflection, it has just occurred to me, that as the source of Trip Advisor reviews are not checked out, it would have been possible for one, or several of Mr Marriott's competitors along Southend seafront to have instigated negative reviews in order to discredit Mr Marriott & increase their own trade. It has obviously not worked as the excellent quality of food & service at Marriott's speaks for itself!
