“Clean, fresh tasty and excellent value!”
Reviewed 23 May 2014 via mobile

Found this place through Tripadvisor and the place managed to live up to its excellent reviews.
Fish was perfectly cooked and shiny flaky. Batter light and crispy, chips were chunky and crispy. Mushy peas could've been more mushy but in combination with all the textures and flavours was absolutely fine. If you want good, honest traditional fish and chips, this is the place!

“Oldhams has a rival”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

I ate large cod and chips and mushy peas last night at Van Looy's Fish and Chips which is directly opposite Southend Central Station on Clifftown Road.
The food was cooked fresh just for us. Everything was excellent, and the portions were very large. I followed it up with 2 scoops of Rossi (a local multi-award-winning producer of iced confectionery) vanilla iced cream with chocolate sauce and a flake and a cup of coffee with a separate jug of fresh milk. The whole thing came to £11.25 which, taking into account the quality, quantity and good service, was very reasonable.
It was early evening, and we were the only people there, so I can't say what the other dishes were like or how they looked, but there is a good selection of non-fish dishes on the menu, so most groups' tastes would be catered for. Alcohol is also available.
This is an excellent chip shop/cafe and a worthy rival for Oldham's and Marriot's (see my earlier reviews). I recommend a visit.

“Consistently good, fresh food, friendly service”
Reviewed 26 March 2014

We are regulars at Van Looey's and have never had an average meal. All food is cooked fresh, No greasy chippie here. Fish is fresh and tasty, as are the chips. Generous portions for very realistic prices. Spotlessly clean. Friendly, attentative staff. Gets very busy, justifiably, at times.

“Pleasant little cafe”
Reviewed 16 December 2013

We had just got off the train, and it was the 1st restaurant we saw, so dashed in, not realizing it was nearly closing time. We had fish and chips with a drink at a very good price. The following morning we went for breakfast, which also enjoyed, served by friendly staff.
