“Great retro arcade”
Reviewed 23 April 2014

If you're a fan of old 80's and 90's arcade games, trawling through the arcades on Southend sea front can be pretty depressing. The arcades are all still there, but the games aren't, now it's all fruit machines and coin pushers. Astro City is the exception, and is the only proper arcade for miles around, quite possibly the only arcade of its type left in the UK. It can be found some way off the sea front, just off the high street - it helps if you're going out of your way to look for it because it's not the easiest place to find.

Inside, there is a good range of arcade games from nicely restored early 80's classics (Frogger, Phoenix), all the way up to early 2000s games (Virtua Fighter 4, Cave shoot-em-ups), and a whole load of stuff in between (Final Fight, Ghosts & Goblins, etc.) as well as a dancing machine (DDR, I believe) and a load of pool tables.

If you're looking for a retro arcade in the South East, Astro City is the best one because it's the only one, and well worth making the trip if you want a retro gaming fix.

“Chill out retro arcade gaming”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

Everyone loves a bit of retro, but this amusement arcade hidden away in Southend is a real gem.

Along the waterfront in Southend, it is lined with seaside arcades, most of which have the same offerings. Astro City however, is a much more laid back affair. They have arcade machines which you haven't seen since the 80s as well as newer games direct from Japan. Just as the ones on the waterfront, they have pool tables and air hockey. Apart from those, they have comfy couches where you can chill out and enjoy a cup of coffee, take the weight off your feet from all the walking. It makes a great pit stop after all the shopping, and is wife friendly (everything's clean, down to the customer toilets). - while we were there, pretty sure a dad came in with his boy, the boy went to play games and the dad sat on the couch to read a paper.

The prices are very good too, most games are 50p a game, worth every penny for that nostalgic trip down memory lane to see if you can still clock Street Fighter 2 on 1 credit, or play Donkey Kong and see how high you can go? I was really impressed that they even had the game Final Fight, which is one of my all time faves.

The downside of it is that it can be difficult to find if you don't know where it is and there are some stairs to get up to the place. It does offer a nice view from the windows once you are up there to people watch. Once you step into the place though it is like a time machine, if only arcades were this nice back in the day. I fully recommend the place, worth checking out for sure!

ps- the Arcade has changed its name from Lucky777 to Astro City now, same people running the place though.

“How amusement arcades SHOULD be!”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

It's a long time since I visited a proper arcade with proper arcade machines, so when I heard great things about this place I just had to visit.

The arcade itself is located right in the centre of town and is easy to find.

Once inside, I was impressed with how clean and modern it was, while also maintaining a fantastic 'retro' vibe thanks to some some great lighting, and of course, the sounds emanating from the machines themselves.

There's a fantastic selection of machines, including some of the classics from the 80's, and they all look to be very well maintained.

There are also pool tables and air hockey - so, something for pretty much everyone.

Highly recommended.

“Exceptional family fun ( especially for adults of a certain age )”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

Although not the easiest arcade to locate in Southend-on-Sea this is one of the best equipped locally, if not nationally for retro games. Sporting an impressive line up of games fit for all of the family, it also houses a wide selection of imported cabinets that are a dream to play on.

Some of my highlights are the original Donkey Kong, Street Fighter 3rd Strike and the Stella Star Trek pinball.

To check it out, you won't regret it

“The real arcade is back!”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

If your into real arcade machines, and 90s games like street fighter and modern shooting games, this is the place for you, perhaps the most well equipped public retro arcade in the UK. Pop up with your 50ps and have a blast
