Crowne Plaza Resort Colchester Five Lakes
Reviewed 10 November 2011

I treated my husband to a spa day at Five Lakes for his birthday. The reception area and part of the hotel have recently been all refurbished and look really modern and luxurious however the spa rooms and the swimming area are in need of some refurbishment desperately. The beauty staff were really good and professional and really enjoyed our treatments. It's quite good value for money and the buffet lunch was really nice, the drinks were very expensive, we only had a drink each and the total was £10.50 which i though was a bit pricey considering where it is based. I'm positive that once the spa & swimming have been finished it will be absolutely perfect but at the moment that is the only thing that let's it down but will definitely go back.

Dear “JSodeau”,
Thank you for your very kind comments following you and your husband’s visit to our Resort on a Spa Day. I am of course delighted to see that you found our staff to be really good and professional and that it was overall offering good value for money. With reference to the fact that the hotel have had a full refurbishment and this creates a little bit of a unbalanced presentation; we have long term plans to refurbish the pool hall as well, so please keep on visiting our website for updates on news related to this.

I do hope we will have the opportunity to welcome you back to our Resort in the near future and hopefully you might even try us for an overnight stay on that occasion to take benefit of all our great facilities here at Crowne Plaza Resort Colchester – Five Lakes.

Yours truly,

Ben C Danielsen
General Manager

Eight of us stayed at The Crowne Plaza, Five Lakes on Sunday 16 October as part of a group golfing package. For £115 each we got a round at Five Lakes, dinner, bed and breakfast in The Five Lakes Hotel and a round at The Essex Golf & Country Club on the Monday (eight people sharing four twin rooms). This was fantastic value (we've paid more just for two rounds of golf)! The communal areas and rooms were of a high standard. The room and en suite bathroom were both spacious and the beds were a good size and very comfy. The bathroom had been fitted to a high standard but not recently - tell-tale signs such as a built-in tissue dispenser for which there are no longer any appropriately-sized refills, so another box is placed on top, and one of those glorious 80s, round shower-heads whose 'needle' setting can practically flay the skin from your body (I normally have thermostatic showers on 'max' but this one was too powerful for me and I had to reign it in a bit). The bars had a good atmosphere and level of service but were let down by a lack of any real ales, a shame given how close they are to the Mighty Oak Brewery which brews the current 'Champion Beer of Britain' as judged by CAMRA. The buffet breakfast was superb but the format didn't work so well for dinner: queuing-up for a few ladles of chili con carne felt a bit like school dinners and the seafood in the starter buffet was continually raided by those picking out the best bits. Desserts were on the small-side but the serving staff were happy for us to take two (good for those of us who are either indecisive or greedy). The golf course was in superb condition. All-in-all a fantastic couple of days and we all enjoyed ourselves tremendously.

The place has had a makeover as a Crowne Plaza. My room was great; nice decor, everything you need and a new, comfy, big bed. I always liked the Five Lakes despite the tired appearance but thought that an opportunity was being missed. Its now what it always could have been.

The hotel is in beautiful surroundings but the decor is dark and dreary. The bedroom was beautiful very well appointed. The food however, was dreadful. Stale sandwiches in the evening and the supposedly hot food at breakfast was cold as was the tea. We spoke to several people who work there but no one was interested. We stay in lots of hotels throughout the country and take parties away. We would never go to this hotel again and would not recommend it to anyone else.

We held our wedding at Five Lakes (now Crowne Plaza) on 5th October and was extremely happy with everything from the original visit back in January to the actual day itself! Maxine was our original organiser from the start and never ceased to amaze me with her consistent contact and help throughout the organisation period. The day before setting up and on the actual day we had Amanda to assist and ensure that everything ran smoothly - and it certainly did! We were all very impressed by her attention to detail and help throughout the day, and also in the preparations and take-down of our decorations. She also organised for us to use a golf cart to travel further into the grounds for pictures once the ceremony finished, which was a nice surprise. The food was lovely, we were also able to personalize the desert to better suit our taste which was good. A couple of our guests sitting at the back of the room did mention that by the time they were served their food was cold - but I can't say the same for the top table so I can only pass on the comment... We were given the honeymoon suite on the top floor as our room for the wedding night and night before - so myself and my three bridesmaids had plenty of room to get ready in the morning without stepping on anyone else's toes, as we had both a large bedroom with en-suite, separate toilet outside and large living room with balcony and views over the gardens and golf course. The hotel has been recently refurbished under it's new management, and it does look lovely - the rooms have also been re-done since our initial visit and look much better as they were a little dated when we had first seen them, so this was an unexpected plus. Though at no point were we advised the hotel was changing names a month before our wedding date, so we had to send out secondary notices to all of our guests to advise of this change "just in case" anyone got confused when trying to find the hotel. The only thing that really upset us was that in our original package when the hotel was still Five Lakes, we'd booked/purchased the three adjoining rooms on the 1st floor so that we could have the ceremony, reception and evening buffet rooms separate - and I had specifically purchased extra decorations to decorate each of the rooms differently, and had also planned a small setup for a video booth and sofas to be in the evening buffet room for our guests who wanted a quiet area to go to chat in the evening. However the night before the wedding when we came in to decorate the rooms, I asked why the evening room was locked and was advised that under the new management it had been turned into a managers office/big boss conference room, and therefore we were unable to use it for the wedding now. So I had all these extra decorations for no reason, and instead had to re-use the ceremony room, which was emptied of its chairs whilst the pictures were being taken downstairs... So this was quite a disappointment to us, especially as no one had bothered to let us know until the night before the wedding! But we weren't going to let it ruin our day; and it ended up being OK anyway, it's just frustrating that we have so many extra unused (and expensive) decorations left over now. But over all was an amazing day, and I can't fault the staff for their help in ensuring our day was as perfect as it could be. Thankyou all.

Recently went to the Five Lakes for a Spa treatment - a mum-to-be treatment and would like to comment on how fantastic the spa staff was - and the treatment itself! Exactly what I needed... I understand the Spa area is going to be undergoing refurbishment which is very exciting as the reception looks so grand now!

Upon reading comments - I am glad to hear that the jewellery is coming back into the reception as I have on several occassions, purchased some lovely unique gifts for Christmas presents so it is good to hear this is returning and hopefully for my next mum-to-be treatment before Christmas!!

Well done on a fantastic refurbishment - thumbs up!
