Crowne Plaza Resort Colchester Five Lakes
Reviewed 14 June 2013

Another great stay at Five Lakes 8/6/2013. Myself and 4 other ladies booked in on the Spa package £149 which was excellent value for money. We meet some great people everyone including staff were very friendly. The only down side is there wasn't any entertainment in the evening so we made our own entertainment with the help of other guests, so a big thanks to them.
Looking forward to our next stay.

Dear Louise K

Thank you for reviewing your return visit to Crowne Plaza Resort Colchester – Five Lakes and I note that you had a great time with your four friends on a spa package break.

With regard to entertainment, based upon how busy we are, we do have a disco on the Fridays and Saturdays, although this is not a given. Thank you for commenting on how friendly our staff were to you during your stay as this makes all guests feel more welcomed.

Looking forward to you all returning in the not so distant future.

Kind regards

I stayed here from 3-7 June as part of a coach party using the hotel as a base for touring Suffolk. Check in was quick but rather impersonal. My room was a generous size and equipped with a flat screen TV, plenty of storage space and a modern bathroom. Everything was very clean. Breakfast was self-service, with a choice ranging from traditional hot dishes to cereal, fruit, toast and croissants. The evening meal was also self- service; this was 3 courses with a choice of starters, main course and dessert. and always included a vegetarian option. Service at dinner was variable; sometimes plates were slow to be collected, and we were only offered drinks on one night out of four. Drinks were expensive and the hotel only allows you 30 minutes of free Internet before charging you an extortionate amount daily for unlimited access. In this day and age, Internet use should be free in such a hotel; these charges are pure profiteering. Visitors should know that this hotel is in quite a rural location; great for getting away from hustle and bustle, but also some distance from Colchester!

Room Tip: Hotel generally quiet and a basic double room is generous.

Dear Sue H

Thank you for sharing your feedback following your recent visit to Crowne Plaza Resort Colchester – Five Lakes and we are happy that you found your accommodation well appointed and overall you enjoyed your dining experience.

WIFI is chargeable at all IHG properties although it is planned that complimentary WIFI will be offered to all Priority Club Members in the future however, a date when this will be rolled out has yet to be announced.

I can also confirm that our bar prices are in line with similar four-star rated hotels in the United Kingdom. The distance to Colchester Town is about 9 miles and access to the A12 takes about 15 minutes and of course there are many little villages to explore - for example; Tollesbury, Mersea, Maldon, Heybridge etc.,

Sue H, we do very much hope that we can look forward to welcoming you back one day very soon.

Kind regards

We stayed here on Saturday 8th June, 2013 for 1 night. Lovely room and in a quiet area as requested. Last time we stayed here in Feb 2013, we had to complain about our dining experience. We were offered a free meal and bottle of house wine which we had on Saturday evening. (8 June, 2013). Steve the new restaurant supervisor and staff were excellent and the food lovely. It was a completely different dining experience to the last time we came. Steve has obviously made a big difference and is a lovely man who leads by example. There seemed more staff on duty throughout the hotel and they were all very pleasant. Breakfast great as usual! Thank you for a lovely stay.

Room Tip: If you want a room in a quiet area just ask!

My golfing buddy and I had a great golfing experience yesterday on the Lakes Course. The greens where a joy to play on, consistent, smooth and in very good condition. The course was also very quite and no traffic noise. This course is much more enjoyable than the Links Course. We played the Links last year in not so good weather and the rough was high. Would recommend the Lakes golf course to all!!

Dear Keith R

We are very pleased to read that you and your colleague had a most enjoyable golfing experience and you found the Lakes course to be smooth and in very good condition. Being in the countryside, we are far, far away from the hustle and bustle of traffic noise and this can only enhance your game by having no distractions.

Looking forward to seeing you again.

We arrived on Saturday 08/06/2013 to celebrate our 1st Wedding Anniversary, we arrived at 2.15pm as our Online Booking said Check in was from 2pm and we had Booked Spa Treatments from 3pm. We got told once we were there that Check in wasn't until 3pm! I showed them my print out of our Confirmation that said Check in from 2pm, so they phoned and checked that our Room was ready, which it was so we were able to check in. Whilst at Reception they also asked if we would like to make Dinner Reservations, which we did, we found that helpful. The Room that we stayed in was lovely, it was a King Room which had the Club Room with it, which is what we wanted. The Bed was very comfy, the Room very spacious. I don't have anything negative to say about the Room at all! Apart from when we Booked this Room, we told the Staff that it was our 1st Wedding Anniversary, and when we arrived to our Room there was a Thank You Card from the Staff for choosing to stay with them, and it also said please enjoy this with our Compliments.....It was a Bottle of Water!! We found that quiet bizarre!! We went down for our Spa Treatments at 3pm, there was a bit of a problem with our Booking, but it all got sorted in the end. All I would say is double check everything that you book with the Spa! Even on the Morning of if needed! And, it didn't bother us, but it might bother othe people, there was a awful lot of Hen Parties in the Spa area, to be expected I suppose. I didn't use to Sauna, Swimming Pool etc, but my Husband did, and he didn't say anything bad about it. We had the Club Room included with our Room, and we were informed the Alcohol was included from 6-8pm, so we went down there just before 6pm, by 6.15pm the Alcohol Fridge still wasn't open, so my Husband went to ask, and he was informed that it was actually 6.30pm! Someone came in about 6.25pm to open it, then some food arrived around 7.05pm. The Food was nothing special, and there wasn't much of it (We have stayed at the CP Gatwick before this, and used to Club Room and the food was much better at the Gatwick one, there was more nibbly bits) But all in all, the Club Room was very nice and quiet. The Dinner was very nice, we could have ordered from the Menu or gone for a £25 pp 3 course Menu, which is actually a Buffet, which is very different. We went for the Buffet as the Food looked so good, and it was! The Chef was very helpful aswell, as there was Beef there, but it was a little bit pink in the middle, I am pregnant so like to have my Meat very well done, so I asked if there was any Beef better done and she prepared some for me! The only thing about the Meal, was that when we first arrived we asked to be put away in a corner somewhere just us, which the Waitress did. But about 20 Minutes into our Meal, they started laying up 2 Big Tables, right next to us, and 2 Groups of about 15 people in each group sat down. They were very noisey and rowdy, which normally isn't a problem. But we had gone for a romantic Meal, and we actually couldn't hear each other once they arrived!! Had a good Nights sleep, apart from the Room was very hot, and even on the top notch, the Air Con wasn't touching it. And we couldn't have the Window open as there was some kind of Party going on in one of the Bars downstairs!? But it was something we just dealt with. Breakfast the next Morning was very nice, all very nicely laid out in a Buffet, along with fresh fruit, yoghurts, toast, croissants etc. We checked out about 9.30am, no problems with checking out.
All in all, we would stay here again. And I think the Spa Treatments and Swimming Pool Area make it a lovely Weekend away for Couples.

Dear TommyAngel 1986

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent visit to Crowne Plaza Resort Colchester – Five Lakes.

The welcome card you refer to and the complimentary water, is a standard in each room. I am sorry that despite you informing our staff that it was your first wedding anniversary, this was not acknowledged in anyway and please accept our apologies.

Thank you for your constructive comments regarding your experience in our Club Lounge and your feedback will be passed on to the F&B Manager.

Meanwhile, I am glad that you were pleased with your dining experience and I note your comments regarding our helpful chef. The restaurant is very busy on Fridays and Saturdays and it is therefore, not ideal for a romantic meal for two but I hope that you still had a lovely time.

Thank you again for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back very soon indeed.

Kind regards

We have stayed here several times for business/corporate functions and for such it is a good quality hotel. We had a village room as did other collegues attending the company dinner dance. The suite was very spacious with a side view to the golf course, we asked for a quiet room and it was (room 615), although a short walk to the main reception areas (not good if you are further away and have to walk in high heels!!). The dinner was exceptionally good for a banquet style dinner, although some complained their food was dry. Previously the buffet style breakfast with almost anything you want to eat is great, however, this time we ordered breakfast in our room as we had another function to attend the next day. This was disappointing, everything was overcooked and dry and they forgot the milk! The milk took 30 minutes to arrive which by then I had finished my 'black' tea. They also charge £5 to deliver breakfast. We did not try the spa facilities or the pool but others said it was good. If we were paying guests I would not hurry back, some areas look tatty and and are in need of attention, ie. wood flaking off balconies to suites in Village Rooms, broken lampshades, they only give you one free bottle of spring water even though there are two guests. A little more attention to detail would make this a much better quality 4 star, the staff are polite but not over friendly, some of the banqueting staff do not speak very good English and need a little more waiting experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room if you want to be away from the main areas, we hada Village Room, first floor...

We stayed in the village rooms 8/6/13. We could not get into our rooms until 3 but people were booking in the same time as us & getting there rooms straight away. Rooms were nice & spacious but at 10 o'clock the next day the maid was knocking ready to clean our room !!!!
Food was nice, bar was nice. Spa facilities were very dated needs quite a bit of work there. Overall the place was good. Apart from when we were leaving I realised I had left a brand new blouse hanging in my wardrobe. When I asked if anything had been handed in by the cleaners it hadn't !!!!!!
This is not what I expect of a 4 * hotel I know it was my fault for forgetting it but it would make me think twice about going back if things that are left by mistake go missing.
